Ouiji Veck Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 I thought my 6 year old battery died of old age.... Then I lost low beam Then I lost high beam on the new headlight within 10 miles.. Checked the battery 12.6v. off.... 13.56 @ 2K rpm w/ the working low beam Then at 2K rpm on the blown high beam....showing 17V !! Guess I better get on the search board and find out how to check my charging sys....anyone want to point me in the right direction? I know...the blown fuse thread...... All those watts and volts make me dizzzy

All those watts and volts make me dizzzy it's the voltage regulator. The alternator produces the voltage and the regulator controls the amount of output going to the battery.
OldButNotDead Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 I know...the blown fuse thread...... All those wattsand volts make me dizzzy Probably need to sit down and drink some beer. Good thread here: http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?...mp;hl=regulator
savagehenry Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 From that thread,"If the reg looses its ground referance it does all sorts of odd things like 17 volts. " Good luck, man.

dlaing Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Probably need to sit down and drink some beer. Good thread here: http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?...mp;hl=regulator I added some comments to that thread just now. Murray is correct. Check the connections, especially regulator and battery grounds, before you spend money on a regulator. Of course it still could be the regulator...but cheaper to find out you only needed to clean the regulator ground.
Tom M Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 get a ducati one cheap and works great That's what I did when mine quit charging last year. The stock 02 V11 regulator is made by Ducati. I replaced it with the Ducati reg from EME, part # EDL450-VoltRect. They call it an Enduralast on their web page, I think that's a mistake. If you click on the picture you can see the Ducati stamp on the part. They have the same regulator on ebay too: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Moto-Guzzi-...0055363395&

As Paul recently mentioned in that thread, the reference for voltage regulation is the line that goes to the warning light. Note that on the early V11s this line goes through the warning light, then through the lighting relay, through the starter relay, and through a fuse, so there are lots of places for things to go wrong. If you are losing lighting because of a bad relay or fuse connection, you apparently will also be getting a bad reference for the voltage regulator. This may explain the 17V.
