  1. Yep, it’s a hassle, but seems doable. I explored the house of Kolor option, but used voodoo and “gut” and decided to go instead with the photo-match device my local shop guy has had good luck with, and using an original side cover to match it to. i also acquired a little stucchi fly screen they’ll paint as well, which came unpainted. I’ve failed to mention an obvious factor for greenie which is different than the Lemans: the painted surface area on the sport is clearly dominated by the tank, much more so than the lemans with the fairing. And my greenie came without side panel covers, so I bought those off eBay, with a variation of UV-fading that’s different than the tank, plus they are small, and mostly not butted-up to the tank. With the new fly screen being painted the same as the large tank, there’s not a lot of other painted surface that will stand out to contrast a non-prefect match, so I’m probably safe. And if necessary can easily just have them also paint the side covers, pillion cover, and fender, so it’s 100%.

  2. This is true but as a retired aircraft engineer of 42 years you need to bare a few things in mind. The piston engine technology you're referring to is around 75 years old or more and materials evolve. Also old aircraft practices/technology tends to not evolve much as the process of re certification is so onerous, so outdated practices hang around not because they are necessarily superior in some way but because they are a "known" and "approved" practice. I've been using and still use Hylomar or "Rolls Royce" compound as we also called it for as long as I can remember but there are modern sealants better suited and superior for motorcycle engines these days. Ciao

  3. Nice GS. Interested to see how the chops come out. My powder coater called today and asked me to swing by and approve their masking. I found a few small threaded bits they had overlooked. Can't wait to see the wheels in gloss black.

  4. So here are a few images that may help. It is very hard to get images of it in situ. LowRyter's installation from the right looking forward: MySport looking down from the left side (tank, airbox, starter, all removed), barely visible beyond the injector: From the left through the "throttle rod tunnel": The mounting tab, on the early RedFrame only, seen midway on this frame turned bottom side up: One more from the left (tank and airbox removed) :

  5. Hey guys, the Ballabio is sold, I don't think the new owner would mind if I named him since he is a public figure of sorts, his name is Howard-Yana Shapiro. He's a member of the 200 mph (motorcycle) club, owns two V11's already - he say's he like the way they ride, along with dozens other MCs, ten of which are inside his home. And, he's a professor. A real underachiever at 75 years young.

  6. All good myself I am wondering how this brace fits. Have ordered it 3 weeks ago, still waiting. Couldn't find any pictures of it installed.

  9. G'day Yep, before I bought my greenie the shop I bought it from added the wee Stucchi fairing (could only get an unpainted one ) and had it painted locally as well as touching up the paint a bit here and there so I was told. I was even given a wee can of the paint he used to touch up any chips or to use as a reference or whatever in the future but never used it. They did tell me it wasn't an easy thing to get right but this bloke did a bloody great job so if you get a good paint guy it well and truly can be done! Cheers Guzzler

  10. After a couple weeks well below freezing, it 50 degrees today in Happy Valley! Too much salt and gravel on the roads to take the Tenni out. Champagne is in too many pieces. So, pushed the GS across the skating rink/driveway and rode the pork chops to the powder coater. They'll order a pound and shoot a test piece for me. I'm thinking the color ("anodized red"), if it matches the swatch, is not cherry enough, but the finish looks good. Got the swing arm cleaned up today and it looks reasonably good. It will be a shame to cover it up with the ridiculously large hugger -- maybe I'll look into CF. No, no, no! This is a parts bike. Clean it up and ride it. Don't throw $$$ at it unnecessarily! We'll see.

  11. Ha, yeah, I bet those place-names have "local pronunciations" out there. They just seem to fit so nicely in the sequence (as much as Tucson to Tucumcari) . . . "Of travel, I've had my share, man! "

  13. Sorry to Laurent about your transmission, but thanks for posting it so we can all get a free lesson in mechanical engineering. In retrospect, it seems Moto Guzzi solved this problem by stiffening up the subframe and adding the arms to the block. But it could have been solved with a change to the mold for the transmission case, and changes to the final machining of the contact surfaces. Interesting. And lest we forget, this was Moto Guzzi's first 6-speed, and it was the best transmission they had ever built at the time.

  14. The French importer of the Royal Enfield motorcycles is organizing a "low cost" championship for those would be amateur racers, or as they put it: "gentlemen riders". What a nice initiative! obviously, you still have to invest a little bit to participate, since you need to install a specific racing kit on your Continental GT, 2000 EUR. But the total cost to participate to all races is 1,400 EUR, or 200/300 EUR if you only want to do one, which you can... Have a look at the kitted Continental GT 650... looks almost as good as a Le Mans, no? unfortunately, the kit is only available to those who subscribe to the event as it says in the top photos here below. I like the spirit of that competition; old gizzards getting together for a mano a mano.... Here's the announcement from Moto.it

  17. Bryan, Lodge at Tellico innkeeper, tells me there there are seven (of the sixteen) rooms still available. Not sure what the mix is at this point. He does say the "suite" is still available, (two queen beds and a full kitchen below building 300 where Anna served us breakfast last). Just a heads-up for those planning this far out. Or this far away (from Tehachapi) . . . if you're willin' . . .

  20. The Airframe&Powerplant mechanic, neighbor, taught me the thread trick to seal (the notorious) VW vertically split crankcase (which is very similar to the Lycoming and Continental piston engines). Makes me ponder resorting to this on the V11 shift plate . . .

  21. There another factor you have to consider; People who normally take their vacation abroad are now going domestic. It would be easy to think that should balance for those foreign tourists, but as I discovered last year at Yellowstone and Grand Teton, everything was mobbed. It is actually good for some of the businesses to be "on demand" again after a period of drought. Too many have succumbed from the habit changes of their usual customers. Around where I live, a lot of restaurants have permanently closed. Those who have managed to survive can't find or keep personnel. Hence, the reason why prices have jacked up so much. I really would like to be able to travel internationally, but I can't plan anything with the continuous changes in what is required to be freely admitted in the countries I am targeting.

  23. BTW , there was no part # on the container . If it (Hylomar) is used on aircraft engines , I think it is good enough for me . If I am correct Lycoming uses this and silk string to seal engine cases and other parts in place of a gasket .

  24. I don't know why anyone would hesitate to paint their motorcycle, .. green or otherwise. It's just a process like everything else. It is a multi stage paint but problems or difficulties are easily overcome with knowledge and experience. I suspect Gmc28's paint will 'nail it' and the only ones who'll know it's not factory are those reading this topic. Guzzi did it. It can't be that complicated.

  26. Daylight but not direct sun is always best to my eyes. I assume you'll have an original piece to compare to when you get a big enough sample? Were you going to try the formula that someone on the forum worked out awhile back, using House of Color I think? Seeing many photos of greenies and how they can look different, I can believe it won't be easy.

  27. Have my Greenie tank at the local painter, who showed me some samples they produced using first their techno-special camera gizmo that gives the paint match, then two other shades created using the old fashioned eyeball to adjust things a bit. Crazy how the differing light angles and brightness dramatically changed the degree to which it matched…. One that looked great under the special sunlight lamp then looked like a terrible match in the shade. I’ve painted a few cars over the years and did battle with some paint matching, but that green paint formula is a tricky one. Did our best to choose and I’ll check back with them this week to see how things are coming along.

  28. I spoke with Don this afternoon. Terrific guy, My red brace kit should be on its way from OKC tomorrow. $50 usd shipped is a bargain! While I didn't get out the dye I took off the airbox and I could find no evidence of cracking in any of the problem areas. Thanks

  30. Yes Chuck on the LHS mount you're right. My repair was to the RHS mount so thats where my head space was. I removed this sharp corner on mine with a small round file wrapped in and wet and dry to finish it off although mine wasn't cracked here. It did undercut the mount a little but the trade off was worth it in my view. I also dressed the radii on all the sharp corners with the die grinder and a tiny ball shaped cutter as well which you can see in the images. I also did the same on the RHS mount although this isn't where mine was cracked. I'd have prefered to do it with a small Bull nosed cutter in the mill but I didn't have the facility. My repair looked a lot nicer before I peened and dressed it back. It's rock solid now though.

  37. Once upon a lifetime, I was working at a Texaco gas station in Belleville, Michigan, USA about 1985. A car full of people stopped for directions to the church up the street, for an extended family wedding. They were from Cork. They were flat hammered. Nobody cared and they apparently successfully navigated their way around. I've long since lost the contact information, but I did get a standing invitation to stay in Cork. It's on my long list of places to see.
