  2. This photo angle seems to exaggerate the Griso’s already long - 61 inch - wheelbase; 3.1 inches longer than a red frame V11. CARC bikes feel a little more refined than the spinies, a V11 has a rawer old school edginess, but the 8V motor pulls hard right up to the red line. I’d encourage any big block enthusiast to add a 8V roller tappet Griso to their stable whilst their prices are so affordable. 2016 was the end of an era for Guzzi. It remains to be seen if Guzzi manage to get the V100 into production next year

  3. I have to say, I am most appreciative to the fellows that stayed with me on the descent from The Divide as my front brakes failed. Not a happy time for me. We stopped at the first overlook that was clear below the 1500 foot cloud ceiling. Took some pics and admired the view. Then, forty minutes working to release my locked front brakes to roll the last 1500 feet elevation/20 miles. You know you are medium-to-truly føøk'd when you blink-blink-awake and see docc's Sharpie and surgical tape applied to your personal vicinity . . .

  4. 1) That could be interesting, so the scope here would essentially expand to include the sporty CARC bikes? Which could mean your own 1200 Sport. 2) Yeah that could be a huge task, and you'd have to deal with the transfer of personal information. If you do go down that road, there might be a member who'd be willing to act as a Griso moderator and copy over the main technical topics. But even that would be time consuming and require a lot of filtering.

  5. Yep, I have contacted Jaap because I know him from the German Bodensee Treffen a long time ago Owning a V11 Lemans before the Griso and knowing this forum, I thought adding Griso content would make sense if technical possible and if necessary. BR Jan

  7. Right at the moment most of us who knew Steve are in shock and I'm certainly not going to contact his girlfriend to pester her about the forum. I would add that Mark, (Beetle.) has his own site at Griso.org, his contributions to the Ghetto have no financial benefit. Unlike certain other places the Ghetto isn't, and never has been a money making platform for anybody. I'm sure that eventually we, the membership, will be able to sort something out. I'd like to offer to run it myself as I'm retiring soon and it might give me something to do besides wallowing in the millions I make from my midget porn empire. Problem is I'm both computer illiterate and such an intolerant bastard I'd of banned everyone in a week!

  9. Pecadaro, Ca....west of Alices, south of Half Moon bay...about 1 mile east of the coast highway..one of my frequent favorite rides.. its an old west town of about 200 people, It one main street 3 blocks long..A bar, a church, and italian reasturant and a bank and a gas station and an art store or two. The owner of this little known by tourists , funky nice old earthy coffee/Expresso/bakery shop is into old Guzzies..Has a couple on display in the Coffee shop, and they have good home made Bakery, and a couple nice girls working .Also has some other Vintage motorcycle stuff on display, leathers, helmets, trophy's, memorabilia . You can park right in front and sit at a table outside with the locals..or inside looking out over your bike, and catch up on the local chat https://www.facebook.com/downtownlocal/ P.S. They play good 60's records on their turn table too :-)

  10. My Shoei GTAir has pinlocks and an anti fogging sheet(s?). I've never gone to the trouble of figuring out how they work and using it; I just crack the visor open a bit as needed. In warmer weather that opened visor has let a wasp fly inside my helmet, that made for a little excitement and a quick stop, lol. In cold weather bugs usually aren't an issue. In real cold weather, I wear a thin balaclava that I pull up over my mouth & nose, it aids a lot in managing the fogging issue. fwiw

  11. The pads/pistons would not retract and the lever was locked less than an inch from the grip (just enough room for my fingers). I removed the pad pins and retracted the pistons with small Channel-Locks, mopping up the fluid from the bleeders with a rag (did not have a small hose for the bleeder). I was concerned that on the ride down the rest of the mountain I would instinctively pull the brake lever and lock the pads against the rotor again, so the pen is secured there to chock the brake lever in place. We were all presuming something hydraulic, but back in the garage, the lever released when the retaining nut on the pivot pin was loosened. It had been installed 6,000 miles ago. The tiny ball that actuates the switch would not release until home and I completely disassembled and cleaned the mechanism. Current thinking is that the nasty white lithium grease I used combined with the moisture, temperature drop, and fine grit from the road construction to bind the pivot and switch actuator.

  12. I'm guessing there are few folks here that have Pinlock anti-fog inserts that attach to the helmet visor. I was cleaning my my visor last week and broke a couple of pushpins. I was able to find a supplier on the 'web. They did cost $10 but got to me a 4 days.https://www.ebay.com/itm/304591910462

  14. Actually if I could of been bothered I would of described it as a magical device that relies on the catalytic effects of wishful thinking and it's interaction with traces of powdered unicorn horn within the device to completely f*ck up the fueling and contribute to greatly accelerated engine wear but I couldn't so I won't.........

  15. Haha, well, same. I am reminded of the V11 Sport debut at the November 1997 EICMA. I bought the second one available in Tennessee, USA, in August 2000. Right at three years after the tease, er "debut." So, no reason to get all worked up and expect your pie&chips before your third pint . . .

  25. Docc, I remember getting a little bit of sales literature when I purchased the bike new. To my knowledge it was a late 2000 built red frame listed as a 2001 Moto Guzzi V11 Sport CF, I assume for Carbon fiber. I bought the bike in 2002 after the Lemans and blacked out motor advancements had hit the showroom floor, so it was kind of languishing on the dealer floor next to its peers.

  26. There's not much in the Eastern Sierras in terms of motorcycle dealers, shops, hangouts, etc. But there are seemingly endless dirt and paved roads. Are you doing the VCMC dual sport ride in Bishop? I did that a couple times, great event. Stop at the Bishop Visitor Center (across the street from Eric Schatt's Bakkery). The visitor center sells paper maps showing permitted motorized trails and OHV areas. I've been meaning to visit the Husky monument, which is actually pretty easy access from Southern California.

  29. Did your helmets come with the inserts and pushpins installed in the visor? If so, just try it out. It does work. I'll agree that venting the helmet by slightly opening the visor works too. The problem with all my helmets, is that once I get over 40mph the visor shuts and then it fogs up. I remember a few years ago, I was heading back from Arkansas, a cold front came in and it was 28 with snow furries. I had anticipated the weather and brought winter gear, all to the envy of my fellow riders going back to Texas. Anyway, I tried to vent the helmet, it was absolutely miserable. I rode about an hour and half and got to Springdale and stopped at McDonalds for breakfast. I come up with a solution by folding some napkins and stuffing them in user the visor. It worked. By the time I got home it was almost 50 degrees and a great ride there after. My issue with this helmet is that I just left the insert in full time. So when I took it apart to clean it, the brittle pins broke. It also has a little distortion, I don't it was due to use or just a small consequence. After all, two different viewing layers, it's going to have some distortions. BTW Docc, not quite what I "lust" for.

  33. I don’t know all the details but I saw it on literature called either cafe carbon or carbon cafe. Numbers ? By whom ? And the fender and side covers I brought to a paint shop and had them clear coated, gloss. I like it better and will take the fly screen next and have it done. That’s why in the picture they appear black. They don’t look black in person.

  34. This AGV is PinLock capable. So was my last (ever) Shoei. I've lust "just" never used the feature, so don't know what to think of the advantages/disadvantages.

  35. It's freaking 95 degrees here today. Too hot to light the grill. But you appreciate the Pinlock? Works in rain and cold.

  36. They make a difference.. but as you said, they are a hassle. I just crack it open when necessary and leave the pinlock at home. To me, they seem best when it's cold.

  37. What an impressive stance. So muscular and lithe. As the last of the Sporting line for the venerable air-cooled BigBlock, I feel the Griso certainly embodies Ing. Carcano's original vision for the V700, "should have the presence of a Norman horse." Just that this one seems to be caught in the middle of a full jump!

  38. That's really sad news... Griso owner Biesel contacted me if it was possible to integrate the griso ghetto forum in v11lemans.com. I told him it would be a hell of a job and possibly undoable. I offered him to make a subforum with all the trimmings for Griso-Ghetto members. But migrating all the content would be too much of a task, if possible.

  39. No all Daytonas were 4v/v HiCam engines, the difference between the cooking Daytona and the RS were Dark Grey Engine Paint WP Suspension front and rear (the early bikes has pretty awful Marzocchi front forks and a Koni rear shock) Stage C engine tune (Wiseco pistons, Carrillo Rods, hotter cam, Hi Flow air filter, different exhaust and map) That looks like an early one (it's a 93 and that's about the year they started in production) judging by the forks, pork chops and engine colour, although it has the pod filters and bellmouth as fitted to the Dr John and what looks like a Termigioni full system, I can't be sure, the crossover isn't standard and the end cans are Termis (or Termi stickers). The white paint job, or it could be a wrap, isn't standard either (but I think really suits it) and the wheels are black, the originals were white, which looked great until you rode it and had to clean them after every ride. Personally I think it's a really nice example that's been tastefully modded. All that's just off the top of my head there's probably more. Even a "cooking" Daytona is a magic thing, the 4v/v engine is a beast, it encourages you to rev it and it sounds glorious. 15k sounds a little rich, but they really are great bikes and I think will rise in value, after the round heads I think it's the best looking engine Guzzi made.

  40. I’ve said it before, but of the original 3 stock colors for the red framed V11s, I never seem to see black bikes, it’s green or silver here

  41. This is really a sad day, the tragic loss of the owner/founder of the Ghetto first and foremost but also the prospect of losing the invaluable trove of technical knowledge and information assembled there over all these years. I’ve been a member there since 2017 after I got my first Guzzi, a Griso and although I rarely posted, being new to the marque and to forums in general, I got to learn so much just reading from all the knowledgeable folks there. It inspired me and gave me confidence to perform all maintenance on my bike and I was always able to find answers to my questions with a simple search through the forum. I really hope someone will be able to pick-up the baton and preserve the forum for Steve/‘Steak’ legacy and the future of the Griso community.

  42. +1 on paper maps. This picture was the start of a great adventure. San Diego, CA to central Utah primarily on twisty two-lane roads. One sheet per gas stop. Just rotate in the tank bag window. I had another set for the way home. And here is Capitol Reef, the last point on the map in this picture. And I'll tell you my favorite paper map story... I'm on a 450 KTM doing a solo loop from Sedona AZ to Flagstaff and back. I get my trusty Federal Motor Vehicle Use Map from the ranger station and plan my loop. On the way back South I'm getting a little concerned about time so I'm moving quick and I get flagged by a ranger. He tells me I'm not allowed to continue on my motorcycle and that I need to turn around. This a HUGE time-sucking detour if I do it. I pull out my Motor Vehicle Use Map. I point to a spot on the map and ask, "Are we here?" He says "Yeah, I guess that road is open now, but only to motorcycles, go ahead." I make it back before dark. PAPER MAPS RULE. Now I confess, I also had a GPS mounted on the handlebars at the time and I was following the line I had laid down (based on the MVUM). On a sidenote, a "breadcrumb" GPS track can save your ass if you are off in the woods alone and get confused.

  43. Yesterday I received the news that Steve 'Steak' Daley, owner/manager/whatever of the Ghetto died in a boating accident in Oregon over the weekend. Apart from obviously being tragic, (I've known Steve a long time. He was one of the good guys.) it does throw the future of the Ghetto up in the air. Hopefully someone will be able to take over the day to day running of the site and keep it up as it is a very useful resource for ALL CARC bike owners and especially 8V's. This is really just a heads up to anybody who references the Ghetto for tech stuff by myself, Beetle and others knowledgeable on the models should perhaps cut and paste any required info for safekeeping in case the board goes tits up.
