  1. Update, the cottage is booked for the Spring Kentucky Spine Raid, so we definitely have space for "repairs".

  3. "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" was from a speech by Churchill regarding the airmen flying mostly Spitfires during the Battle of Britain. A bit of a stretch with the wordplay on my part, sorry about that. And yup, wingtip salute. Analogy is annoying I know and yet I persist in inflicting them on all those around me because .

  5. 750 RE Interceptor 1967, ALL SHINY, that made a big impression on a 15year old guy . Mother not impressed after seeing my freshly painted closet doors filled with bike pictures,, a 750 Interceptor was at the top. They were made underground, I think, stable temp for better clearances. Were they leaking, yes, a lot, but I still like them . Cheers Tom.

  7. (snapping suspenders, tamping corncob pipe) Back in the day, our local EAA chapter used to get a night per year at the Dayton Air Force museum. It was after hours, and we could get in anything we wanted, wiggle the controls, yell, CLEAR! etc. I'm not much of a warbird guy.. but it was a hoot. Most of the fighters reminded me of the old adage.. an elephant is a mouse designed by the military. Except the Spit. The cockpit is just right. Everything falls readily to hand, as they say. Good visibility from the cockpit, comfortable. That is one warbird I'd give a go. The wierdest? The ME262. Those Germans.. who else would have rudder pedals that go up and down?

  12. This whole exercise leaves me with the opinion that, once assembled (for antivibration purposes), the front fender should be removed and replaced as a unit whenever possible. And that the antivibration dampers should not be excessively tight in order to function as desired.

  15. Ok, three of the absolutely positively last run are spoken for. @Scud.. don't worry about buying any unless you really want one. I took the material I already had along with the little airplane job, and the water jet guy didn't charge me any setup.. he already had the program in the can, and I gave him a file so all he had to do is pick up one corner of the material I gave him to cut the exhaust flanges. Nice guy..

  23. The waterjet guy called and said the blanks were done, along with the exhaust flanges for the little 3 cylinder radial I'm working on, so rode and picked it up on this really nice fall day. So. I have the blanks and when the weather turns bad (probably next week) I'll run them. If you want one, PM me with your mailing address, and you will be in line for the Shirley no doubt last run of the Lucky Phil Extenders.

  24. Same deal with my MZ in a PIle. (tm) Switch gear apart, wires loose everywhere. Sourced a carb because the Distinguished Previous Owner had been in there, too, and broke the float pedestal. DeOxited and hooked everything back up according to the wiring diagram, and it's been good for years.

  25. I bought a vintage bike (26 years old, 16 years ago) for $600. Cheap because it was electrically "dead, and I can't figure it out". I thoroughly dressed every connection as mentioned. Grounds as well. Fired up and runs like new, still.

  26. I had to disassemble the terminals from my relay board to tighten and DeOxit the terminals to eliminate the intermittent failures and ghosts. Resign yourself to the tedium and you'll be rewarded.

  27. I hesitated to stop for a pic on the even-more-remote single lane bridge I took to the north side of the river . . . There was even a new road in the mix today I had never been on to get to that remote single lane bridge. Always a concern about stumbling onto scary company on these backroads . . .

  32. The Gondola in McMinnville, Tennessee, is our halfway home lunch-spot leaving the South'n SpineRaid. We always arrive with a big appetite after traversing the 4 thousand-foot climbs and drop-offs over the Cumberland Plateau. They have never let us down, but this visit was exceptional. Certainly the food, but mostly due to the presence of Kentuckians. Seems they have a particular "effect" on the service staff . . .

  34. This photo angle seems to exaggerate the Griso’s already long - 61 inch - wheelbase; 3.1 inches longer than a red frame V11. CARC bikes feel a little more refined than the spinies, a V11 has a rawer old school edginess, but the 8V motor pulls hard right up to the red line. I’d encourage any big block enthusiast to add a 8V roller tappet Griso to their stable whilst their prices are so affordable. 2016 was the end of an era for Guzzi. It remains to be seen if Guzzi manage to get the V100 into production next year

  35. What an impressive stance. So muscular and lithe. As the last of the Sporting line for the venerable air-cooled BigBlock, I feel the Griso certainly embodies Ing. Carcano's original vision for the V700, "should have the presence of a Norman horse." Just that this one seems to be caught in the middle of a full jump!

  37. Yesterday I was at the annual Guzzi Club GB national rally. It was a “toss-up” whether to take the Griso or the silver V11, I decided on The Griso as usually there are several spine framed bikes at the rally, but few Griso’s, so in the interest of variety I fueled up and off I went Not one spine framed Guzzi was there, and only one Griso - mine. Masses of Cali EV’s, V85’s, V7’s, & Stelvio’s Anyway we had a great days riding, and stopped at some fine cafes along the way. Note no “gastro” food here, just good old bacon & sausage
