Yes, both are a loooong ride, with lots of turns... perhaps too many if there is such a thing (Tail of the Dragon nearby, which based on my years riding in the Santa Cruz Mountain is something I think I'd find tedious after the first 100 turns ) All that kidding and seriousness aside... it would be great fun to meet everyone out on this side of the continent. But it would indeed be a long ride for me, after not riding in many years, and the space between Sanford (Raleigh) and the mountains is not super interesting. And of course, the big issue is the bike. It has sat for many years, so I have to go through the whole thing, then break it back in to satisfy any qualms about its long distance reliability. But September is a long ways off, so you never know

  3. ^^^^ Pro Grips gel and lead shot plus Napoleons is what I had on the Mighty Scura. Worked pretty well, but yes you could feel a little ticking from that V twin. That's a good thing.

  4. BTDT numerous times, at several points, including from the Old North State. Oh, oh. I wondered how you think I might have gotten to Tellico from here at the top of Virginia without crossing said divide. Then I saw the "V11" bit. My runs on the Ballabio were always north from Atlanta. Picky, picky. Bill

  10. Weird, Al , @al_roethlisberger, I'm not sure anyone has ever ridden a V11 across the Appalachian Divide from North Carolina to a South'n Spine Raid. Or even met us for lunch at the Tapoco Lodge. The Tapoco is still in North Carolina in case those Tennessee Wants&Warrants might still be in effect . . .

  11. Agreed! I've been using these grips on various motorcycles for 20 years. They have a great feel, tame vibrations, and have great grip. I also filled my factory "clip on" bars with lead shot and silicone, and have the heavy Throttlemeisters. That all seemed to help, but it's still a twin

  13. Just for reference, here is the layout of rooms at the Lodge at Tellico as they are a bit, er, "non-intuitive" . . . Facing south, from the entrance, the buildings are numbered back-to-front and right-to left. The rooms in each building are numbered counterclockwise from the northeast corner, or right/front as you walk up. (Garage is beneath Building 4) . . .

  14. trying to make sense of that diagram assume part 7 is the bush in either end of the torque arm, where parts 3, 4 & 5 (bolt, 2 washers & nut?) are shown. Thanks for the tip, looks like a 5 minute job if it needs doing. (Well, 5 minutes following the 4 hours of swearing that traditionally accompanies the undoing of a bolt that hasn't been touched in 16 years of British weather....)

  15. I'm a little late to the post here but I had the same problem...couldn't tell what the trans level was because of pink crud encrusted sightglass. Well, instead of replacing trans oil with shockproof like the PO had been running, I replaced the oil with the specified amount of sae 80w90 (valvoline or the like because I was trying to be trifty) and called it a day. The bike needed so much other routine maint stuff I figured I'd deal with the sightglass some other time, I just wanted to get the bike running good. Sometime & miles later during an engine oil change I was pleasantly surprised to find that the trans sightglass was perfectly clean as it displayed a light tea colored oil on the other side of the glass. So, if you aint pulled the glass yet and you're not running the red stuff you may want to give it a few K miles, it might "self" clean. Art

  17. Hiya Paul..hope you are doing well, too. Well, as you can see, the Napoleon's hadn't been installed yet. The Mighty Scura has 38820 (bitchin) miles. The pro grips gel *do* make a noticeable difference.. As I..er.. mature.. the old girl is getting a little heavy. I'm thinning out the herd to the AeroLario being my "wind up" bike. The over 100,000 mile G5 went to a good home (and happy customer) last summer. Just put a new Conti Road Attack3 on the rear for the next keeper. She interviewed a couple of guys at the Kentucky rally this fall. "Oh, Gawd.. I really need that bike, but don't have the money right now." I don't need money, so I'll wait unless some other qualified prospect comes along. Another friend wants the old girl. He's an aircraft mechanic, and would be another good keeper. I want her to be kept in the manner that she has become accustomed..

  18. Sorry for the lack of news. But it will be worth the wait. I just received a pre-production sample and as soon as I get my gaskets (already ordered from MG Cycle) I'll fit it and let everyone know how it goes on. While I don't expect any issues I'm sure you'd rather have me be the tester than you. Getting the plates engraved is still being worked on. While I'm sure everyone would like this engraved on their plate you will be getting something different. I know I've said this many times, but it will be worth the wait.

  19. Royalties can go to MSF. I am blessed with so much that I don't need the money from a few plates to fund my retirement. I'd prefer it went to a good humanitarian cause.

  20. Previous aluminium plates I've made for our old race bike were up to 1.5mm thick. To be affective as a windage plate as well as a baffle you run the oil just below the plate. Because the volume of the crankcase isn't constant as it lessens it will attempt to flex the plate downwards and as it increases the reverse happens so the plate will vibrate like the skin of a drum. The alloy plates all had a tendency to crack and disintegrate, hence the choice of stainless. Pete
