  1. I've only recently begun using Shin-Etsu grease on all things rubber;but I've already worked magic with it a few times. The 16 yr old rubber battery holder on my Griso (which is a pita design on it's best day),was bent so badly out of shape & stiff & dry,I thought I might not be able to salvage it. Liberal amount of Shin-Etsu worked into the rubber with a tooth brush, gentle application of heat (hot air gun) and pressure applied in the right spots once the rubber loosened up & held correctly as it cooled down. It looked almost brand new when I was finished. fwiw

  5. Can't you just use the innards of the old switch with the casing from the new one? Or do you not want to risk trying to take it apart again? I had one damaged by a vandal whilst the bike was parked. Got a replacement and broke the casing trying to get it apart, got another replacement and successfully took it apart. The innards I'm using are the original ones from the V11. They had to be, because the second replacement had a different switch in it. From an Aprilia Scooter, S50, I think. Very cheap on E-Bay second hand. The switch had only two contacts rather than four, but the housing is identical. Getting the switch apart was not that hard on the second go, after messing it up the first time and then thinking about what I did wrong.

  6. What Pete said. It is true that you can't properly set valve clearance if you are at the wrong TDC. But if you spin the engine in either direction you will see both TDC's, the one that has both valves open followed by the one that has both valves closed, followed again by the one that has both valves open. It just goes on. As to spinning the engine backwards, in my opinion it is not critical with the V11 engine but just as a matter of practice I always spin the engine the direction it was built to spin. Spinning it backwards will not damage it. It will not affect setting valve clearances. It isn't going to make your wife leave you. But I would still suggest as a matter of proper practice spinning the engine in the direction it was made to spin. If we were setting cam timing or ignition timing it might actually make a difference. We are not, so it doesn't. But it is still the right thing to do.

  8. According to an article I read about this movie, which has been seen at the Telluride festival, the actors had to take a riding course to be able to ride: I have personally ridden old bikes, albeit when I was in my teens, so about 50 years ago. Mostly British and French. What I am certain, is that the movie will do what they normally do with vintage cars movie. The real vintage cars are for normal shots. If there is going to be stunts of falls, they will use modern bikes in disguise.

  9. I have read a little bit about it, and although we cannot really know until we see it. It's inspired by a photography book from a guy named Danny Lyon. It follows the transformation of a motorcycle club over a decade. I must admit that i kind of like the lead cast actor, Tom Hardy. I also liked Jodie Comer in the Villanelle show. That will change me from Yellowstone or Longmire. I don't know if Texas has anything to do with it, but I am drawn to the cowboy way of life.

  10. Hollywood has always been out of touch with the 'common' folk in society, and their depictions of such have always missed the mark, especially if they have a bone to pick with the segment portrayed. I hope this is not the case and it's just a gangster movie - with motorcycles. This looks good and I certainly look forward to seeing it (when it's free) for the story, the set, and those gorgeous vintage Harley's. Hoping for some trick riding scenes, and no agenda.

  11. TDC=Top Dead Centre. It occurs twice in the 720 degree cycle of the motor. Both times the piston is at the top of its stroke it is at TDC but on only one occasion are the tappets on the base circles of the cams and that is when you adjust the clearance.

  13. Well, itā€™s been an interesting day. I canā€™t figure out how to post pictures with my phone, so my too many words will have to do. Left home about 7:30 and had a fine ride for an hour or so . Then a bee or wasp got into my helmet and started to work.. Anyway, that hurt ā€” as in really, really hurt. Iā€™m not a bee sting virgin. In fact, a week or so ago, two hornets got me. Those really hurt, too, but this was worse. Stopped at a Walmart and got some meds, but the pharmacist was understandably reluctant to give me anything that might make me drowsy as I was riding a motorcycle . Oh, then it rained. Lots of it. Actually, for a very short time. But long enough to douse me completely. Finally made it to the hotel. Took off my helmet, looked in the mirrorā€¦ and screamed. Letā€™s just say the puffiness is impressive. Mitch McConnellā€™s wattle has nothing on mine. So, here i sit in a crowded urgent care waiting room hoping to get something better. Will see you tomorrow. Though you may not want to see what I look like! Bill
