  1. That reminds me to remind y'all to service your battery terminals and the Main Negative/Earth cable connection to the back of the gearbox behind the seat latch . . . There it is, hiding from us, between the seat latch and the gearbox vent! Neglect this at your peril . . .

  2. For the fun of it, I checked out Tellico Plains on Goggle Maps. I wish I hadn't... If only we had roads like that in the Netherlands! *drool emoji

  3. Sure, while your at it, test the voltage output of the "alternator." Inspect the two yellow wires where they attach to the stator under the alternator cover for breakage and/or heat damage. Be certain your regulator has a dedicated ground strap from the case to the timing chest and the connections are cleaned and "treated." Inspect the 30 amp regulator/charging fuse for signs of heat damage. (Might benefit from more than one point of correction.)

  4. G'day When helping out at one of our branches recently, I bumped into one of the customers I've known for many years. He's just bought another new GS1250 Trophy at $32,500 worth down here.He loves all the bells and whistles it comes with and by God does it come with them....! My concern would be what would the electronics be like when the bike has 100,000 kays plus? I doubt it'll get to that all the same but it's bloody hilarious when comparing this thing with the V11. Definitely chalk and cheese but as he says if you were to do a lap of Oz this would be the bike to do it on. Cheers Ps still rather do the lap on an old T3 though ha ha

  5. +1. I think that a poor ground from the regulator to the bike is the reason for many overcharged batteries and failed regulators.

  6. A big change from the 'Sport. Super tall, monkey motion front end with no dive took a minute, power brakes I'm still not sure I like. But I have to admit it's comfortable (though it has risers and aftermarket bars, tough on the shoulders) and from 0-50mph it's a terror on tight pavement where the 'Sport likes higher speeds. I'm not sure who thought it was a good idea to put 550 pounds and 8 gallons of gas on a Giraffe, but I did make it down one horror of a gravel 'road' without much event.

  9. Being on that reminds me of the time I tried to stand on a high chair (YES a high chair) to change a ceiling light bulb . It did NOT end well . A buddy of mine had a GS for one summer and your description is a good one ! BTW: if you haven't changed the plastic fuel line quick disconnect , do it NOW before you get a lower leg / boot full of gasoline !

  10. So, I have this maniacal Canadian friend who lives in Maine. He bought an '04 BMW GSA. Then he found another, price so low it was theft due to a tank full of water. So he 'bought it for me'. 'Come get it whenever you can, pay me whenever'. So after a year of telling him he could triple his money on it, he still insists it's mine; He planned a trip to Ohio with a few other friends, and since I was going to Ohio anyway there was no avoiding it. Flew to Maine, rode it back to Florida. Never saw an inch of interstate, about 3k miles worth of secondary and back roads. I forgot to record some of it, but here are the links to the parts I did. https://www.relive.cc/view/v36AxYYm7GO https://www.relive.cc/view/vRO78Mk2oy6 https://www.relive.cc/view/vPOpr5L7XRq https://www.relive.cc/view/v8qkpzj1n3v https://www.relive.cc/view/vNOPQkLppY6

  11. Another hey-up on inspecting stator wires. As this failure progresses, the voltage spikes will destroy the regulator and damage the relays (even the Best Relays). . . Also, be certain to inspect the two "bullet connectors" for the yellow stator output wires. Clean, tighten, Caig DeOxit®, and seal (heat shrink). When replacing the regulator, groom the wiring and connectors so the regulator can be easily accessed and changed next time . . .

  12. As a former motorcycle racer who traveled this country racing for peanuts, I really don't think learning the tracks in Europe is key to getting an American racing in MotoGP. Learning tracks is not that hard for a talented racer. If learning tracks is holding you back, you may not have enough talent. I raced local racers at their home track, a track that I had never been to or a track that I had only been to once before, and was still able to race them and often beat them. And I was not MotoGP caliber. Some racers learn new tracks faster then others, but at that level all of them should have no issues learning a new track in a day or two. There are Americans like Joe Roberts running in Moto2, but sadly he is not overly impressive. You could say he went over there too soon, but then had he not gone as soon as he did people would say he went there too late. PJ Jacobson went over there fairly early as well, but came back and is now honing his skills and improving. What could have been had he done that first. The pressure is to go to Europe as soon as you can, but it is such a meat grinder that you may kill your career if you don't get the right ride quick enough. The reality is, at one time the world looked to America for the next hot talent. Now they do not. We have incredibly talented racers here, but they tend to be over looked. As they say, talent is universally distributed, but opportunity is not. The lack of American talent in MotoGP is mainly down to a lack of opportunity in my opinion. But it is what it is. I also think the current feeder system is suspect, with success or failure in Moto3 or Moto2 not being a good indicator of potential in MotoGP. Moto2 is closer then it was with the Honda inline 4, but the Triumph triple is a very different animal then what you have in MotoGP.

  14. I haven’t used the silver V11 much this summer, but yesterday it went back on the road and I’ve put around 200 miles on it over this weekend Noticed the telltale drips of battery acid from the rubber tray when I got home this evening, so I removed the battery, no battery case cracks / leaks, so I guess it’s been overcharging and venting I guess It’s time to replace the regulator; I understand this is a reasonably common problem with the V11 charging system Should I check anything else before I replace the reg / rectifier unit ? The photos below were taken yesterday at the National Memorial Arboretum Ride to the Wall, where around 5000 riders paid their respects to armed forces personnel, past & present

  17. My opinion: if that is an argument that carries any weight, then "professional motorcycle racer" is the wrong job for the person in question. Yes, it is hard to be away from home and family, but it is part of the deal. PS: about 35 years as a freelance sound engineer, in which profession most of the work isn't close to home, and doesn't get you home at 6 in the evening for dinner, allows me to make such a "harsh" judgement. I survived, and I didn't earn nearly as much doing that as those pro riders do. I still work as a sound engineer, but now I'm old and I've found a cushy job in an opera house close to home.

  18. Dorna is only watching their bottom line, and the return on investment; since the introduction of the short Saturday's races, the audience has grown 20%, according to GPMag, a French media that is one of the few that has obtained Dorna's official accreditation. As for the 2015 feud between MM and VR, I agree with you on the principle while understanding that VR46 made the mistake of giving the only factual evidence to be penalized by kicking. If he had not, then Marquez's poor sportsmanship would have come under review, maybe. Let us always remember that Dorna's top management is Spanish.

  19. I doubt the US will have a serious entry into MotoGP anytime soon. Our better chance is in WSBK, where Gerloff is gaining his footing on the BMW. Joe Roberts continues to run mid-pack in Moto2, sadly he was never one of our better racers. He is good enough to be in Moto2, but it seems unlikely he will do enough to get promoted to MotoGP. Reality is currently that success or failure in Moto2 seems to have little bearing on success or failure in MotoGP. It is possible that Joe Roberts could be amazing in MotoGP, but unless he does better and earns a shot we will never know. And I can't see him earning that shot.

  20. MPH still sells the riser kits, I bought my 1st set of MPH risers in 2004, the 2nd set in 2022. The only changes according to the kit is an eagle emblem instead of MPH scribed into the aluminum. The kit has always came with new steel braided hydraulic clutch and brake lines. The hydraulic clutch is tight but can be made to work, the fix is to order one for a Centauro, which is longer and makes the kit much easier to install.

  21. Land Rover still has a "Defender". It is not like it used to be, the current version being all swanky and complicated while the old one was rugged and stone axe simple. But it is still a name in use by them.

  23. Yes. Reports of shock eye failure, at the swingarm, go way back. More recently, reports of bolt failures at the reaction rod/frame junction on earliest V11 sport before Moto Guzzi superseded the bolt. Both are oft overlooked maintenance items, it seems . . .

  24. Grease those pivot bolts liberally. As well as the pivot bolt for the reaction rod where it connects to the frame . . .
