  1. Griserie... had to look up the French to English. So this topic is "Intoxication with Griso." Fitting. The Griso didn't catch my attention immediately. I, too, thought the exhaust was clunky, and the oil cooler was weird. And I didn't care for the silver frame and how it visually cut through the body work. But damn, they grow on ya... And when I had the opportunity to collect Kindoy's silver and black SE with lovely mods, included a very nicely tucked in exhaust I went for it. I'm totally enjoying the bike, and it's getting the most riding time right now. Speaking of right now - I think I hear some griso (greasy) tacos calling me from the end of a twisty road. See ya later.

  2. I think a lot of people these days are very self- absorbed and lost in their digital world (s).... Exception being us bike nuts,we seem to be able to talk to each other without any dramas.I've even found that it's (the bike) a good conversation starter with some er normal people too!

  4. They do grow on you don't they..... I kinda thought that if something happened with the V11 I'd go with a 1200 Sport but would seriously consider a Griso! Mind you I do hope nothing happens to the Green one... Cheers

  5. I don't want to jinx it...but am hoping that Marquez gets it, now that he's starting so much farther up in position, he doesn't have to try to go from 13/14 to 2nd...perhaps he can ride a clean race and win. Mugello is a fast track...360 km/h top speed...just madness...but oh so thrilling to watch!

  6. rode the V85tt again this week, and has me thinking how sweet it would be to take it to John Day instead of Red. Oh man, i hope Red can’t read, and see what I’m thinking…. I mean with AI, and other black magic, who knows… don’t want a jealous Italian beauty having it out for me for leaving her behind. anyway, all that cargo space, windscreen, smooth suspension, and range, sure would be nice for that run. Though bringing Red to such a gathering seems most fitting for other reasons. may be a game-time decision, whether to strap on the soft bags, pack real light, and head out on Red, or play it lazy and sweet and just flop onto the V85 and go. oh, and thanks again to P6x for the V11 patch(s)! Thinking what I’d wear in the heat of John Day to sport that nifty patch, but it’ll be t-shirts and shorts I’m thinking down there in late june.

  7. For making coffee at home, we have settled on a French Press. As with all machines It requires starting with good coffee... and prefer the darker roasts. The press is fabulous, because it is simple to use, and you can let the ground soak for a while before pushing the plunger down, to extract ALL the flavor. We like a double-walled, insulated press (as opposed to glass ones that are most common) as the coffee will stay hot enough to enjoy the second cup. I even have a mini french press for camping, as all I need to do is boil water to have a proper coffee. We also have a Breville Barista Touch machine, which makes a fine espresso and steams milk for all the fancy drinks. We're very happy with that machine. And a coffee story... A while back, I had an opportunity to goof off for a couple days before work in Germany. So I rented a 1200GS and went to Austria. From there, I set myself a mission to have a cup of coffee in three different countries on the same day. Woke up and coffee at the Hotel Enzian in Landeck (which is very motorcycle-friendly). Then another cup of coffee atop the Stelvio pass in Italy. The third was in Switzerland at a roadside cafe on the way back to complete my loop. Coffee Rated by Quality High to Low: 1) Italy, 2) Austria, 3) Switzerland Coffee Rated by Price Low to High: 1) Austria*, 2) Italy, 3) Switzerland Winner: Italy *the Austria coffee was "free" as breakfast was included at the hotel

  8. I saw the "The Fall Guy" yesterday at iPic. Throughout the movie, Ryan Gosling, a.k.a. "Colt" is craving for coffee, with many unsuccessful attempts using different machines. Can anyone remember a show where coffee is an important element of the plot? I will start: a Korean show, "Would you like a cup of coffee" that revolves about an apprentice Barista that must learn how to brew the perfect cup of coffee from the owner and master of the bar. I like the philosophy that revolves around making good coffee, on top of the Korean search for perfection in the respect of others. It would be considered shameful to serve anything but perfectionism. Since we talk about Bars, there is something that I miss a lot from my younger days. Bars, Café, Pubs.... you know, places where you would encounter anybody and talk to like you had known them since you were born. I must admit that I don't find this any longer here, or there. Anywhere you go where people congregate, it is all keeping to oneself. Silence. No more exchanges. I still remember the days when we would go to the bar after any major event, to discuss it with perfect strangers. Whatever opinion they had, we would always reunite around a café, sometimes adding strong liquor in it; We would always repair the world, making it a better place. We should go back to those Bars, Café, Pubs... Pronto!

  9. I had scoured the interwebs to try and find some photos of the finish of currently manufactured Mistral exhaust mufflers with no luck. Mistral recently updated their website but the images are still poor. I was interested in how well finished they were, what the laser etched logo looked like and how the satin finish looked close up. The guys at MG Cycle were great to deal with so I purchased a set recently. They were very well packed. Each was wrapped in a layer of clear plastic sheet, then wrapped in bubble wrap and then wrapped in heavy corrugated cardboard...... there was plenty of protection. I was pleased with the finish and so I thought it might be of interest to others to see what they look like close up, if anyone is considering them for their V11. The laser logo has replaced the old red logo and it is a lot more subtle. I also purchased the hangers for them because they are the high mount ovals. I can't say these are well done.... welding is poor and they look like they were wrapped up before the paint had time to dry. I will have to redo them myself.

  10. In my continuing journey to improve my machining skills I decided to make replacement Titanium bolts and washers that mount the rear bevel box torque arm bracket to the bevel box. One bolt and two washers done one bolt to go. I've also got enough Ti stock to make a replacement bevel box torque arm bolt as well. Phil

  11. No the end is just drilled for the live centre. Too much stick out for a 10mm shaft for threading Titanium. You need the support. Safety wire is .028" my preference for most fasteners. Anything thinner is too thin and .032" is a pain to use. I have some thinner wire maybe .022" or something for light fasteners but I don't have much use for it on things these days. The breather is standard as far as I'm aware. Phil

  15. Aha, that should do the trick. Guess I should have thought of that. I would recommend playing with it to get used to it. On mine there’s a delay in when you push the trigger and then the sound of the shutter click. Probably an artifact of the sound setup, not an actual delay, but not sure. And where to aim it… shift it so it’s pointing a bit higher or lower, and that sort of thing, based on where your helmet is pointed. Gotta shoot a couple shots, then connect with the iphone app to see the pic, which can be a bit of a process. Can also pull the data card out but thats not usually faster. Once figured out, it works pretty well. I have Nolan helmet(s), and the style i have isn’t ideal for the sena cam because i have to mount it further back, so pretty much always have the right side of the pic showing my helmet.

  16. I have one of the Sena intercomm’s with camera…. Maybe the Evo 10x or something like that? Takes some getting used to, and it’s got its challenges, but the biggest one is that the camera really drains the battery. Without pics, it’ll go 2 whole days or more of intercom use, but with a handful of still pics it won’t even make it one full day. YMMV For myself, I’ve tried a lot of different options over the years for camera’s and riding. My current favorite is an old waterproof Nikon point-and-shoot that i had shelved years ago, because the iPhones are now so good i couldnt see packing around a point-and-shoot any more. But being a fully waterproof unit, with “hard buttons” rather than touch sensitive buttons like on an iphone, i put it on a leash around my neck on outside of my riding jacket, and its pretty easy with gloves on to turn it on and shoot a pic. Best answer is the GoPro, but I don’t like all that bulk hanging off my helmet, and am honestly too impatient to fiddle with the process.

Being constantly on podium and only winning one race is how A Rins won a championship on his Suzuki. 🤔 Marc is on a mission to show everyone he’s still got it. i hope Marc wins next too, but Jorge Martin is extremely fast. 19. I'm going to have to figure out where to post photos etc. I don't know how well documented this trip will be, it's a 'ride' not a destination. Anchorage is the idea for the turn-around, but a lot depends on mileage and time. I do have a camera on the Sena talky, if I can learn how to use it...of course there will be pics when we stop. I suppose I can simply make a shared folder in Google photos and do the narrative here.

  20. My Godfather took a trip to Alaska is a camera bug that loves to waste film on a trip . Not this time , every turn , crest , horizon , EVERY picture was the most beautiful scene I had ever seen until I looked at the next pic. I can't remember the farthest point north but he took a picture there proving his quest and conquest was finished . He then returned taking pics just as beautiful of his return to Barlow . If at all possible , I would like to follow this voyage and see these sights.

  23. For what it’s worth, i ride alaska every year, except during covid. Love it. Mosquitoes are a bigger problem than bears. Not joking. DEET, and/or one of those head net deals can important, though why they are thick a times and at other times not an issue at all, is not something i understand. Wind/breeze helps a lot, so being out of the trees when you camp CAN be helpful, depending on the situation. bear talk for alaska is like a motor oil thread… so with that in mind I’ll just note my own personal input: bear spray - yes. Gun, no, for the reason u noted, which is Canadian customs & law. And northern canada is where u want to be… fantastic. Be cautious with food, but an old friend who still lives up there and camps a lot each year always just ties his food in an REI type waterproof bag, attaches a line through it, and slings it up over a tree branch so its suspended in the air, away from tent. Best idea? I don’t know, it’s just what i’ve always done, and has worked fine for me. I’ll see bears every time i ride up there, but they’re always trying to run away from me, and I’m always trying to cautiously gape at them as sightseer. I just assure i have an exit path on the bike, and all’s well, with the deal being me just trying to be smooth enough to not scare them away. Being on foot and getting between mom and cubs, that extraordianary circumstance of note, well thats something to just avoid, like riding through thunderstorms (mostly avoidable if we’re careful, but not always when we’re enjoying the scenery and not paying attention :->) Note that a lot of the northern canada campgrounds are really great. I avoid US campgrounds, as i don’t want the noise of other people, or RV’s, or just other people at all (I’m a Scrooge that way). But those northern canada campgrounds are often deserted, yet well kept. And they’ll have the metal/concrete storage containers, which are basically garbage containers that seal, so you can leave food there while you camp (on the honor system, if others are around). Bear proof. And if the food is in that waterproof/sealed bag, I’ll even use the back of a fully enclosed garbage container (in the metal enclosure, not actually in the garbage bin) to stow the food at a campground that doesn’t have the bear container dealio’s. Sounds gross, but if that sealed garbage area isn’t filthy/gross and your food is in the sealed sack, it’s an easy stowage place. Judge that as you choose… and you can map-search for those campgrounds, since they are identifiable places on a map, versus just hoping to find something like a US forest service land access road that might lead you to a legal and quiet place to camp down here. For the satellite device, lots of info/options as u know, but the inReach or similar devices work really great now, and are cheap to buy and cheap to use for text, and when necessary to make a call. I haven’t used the call feature, but the text feature is used by some of my friends in AK quite regularly. Monthly charges aren’t that bad, with choice for either year round (cheaper monthly) or just seasonal (practical, but higher monthly charge), and usually includes lots of texts in the package. I have my old inReach i pack along, but friends have newer devices that apparently are simpler to use, pair to your smartphone via an app which makes it all work pretty easy. With a GSA you’ll not have any issues with fuel, but I’d generally not pass up the chance to top off and stretch your legs even when u think u may not need to. Peel off to visit Atlin if you can, up sort-of near Carcross, and the top of the route to Skagway. It’s one way in/out for Atlin, but only about an hour (from memory…. Double check that) each way, and a fun place to spend the night. Pretty, and interesting history. Couple of hotels on the lake there which are not “bush”, and probably overpriced, but nice break between camping nights. Route down to Skagway, White pass, is fantastic. Top 10 type of road. In fact, if i was designing the route, 100% that I’d visit Atlin, then go back up to the “main road” and then shoot down White pass to Skagway (lots and lots of tourists, but still neat to see), then take the fairly short but very enjoyable ferry ride over to Haines, then ride back up to Haines Junction from there to continue the journey into AK. Probably spend the night in Haines, which is less crowded than skagway, but fewer hotels at Haines, so not always feasible. (I lived there for a short while a long, long time ago). The hotel halsingland is worn out and not very well maintained, and not cheap, but it’s a great piece of history with great views, and an interesting/likeable owner. The ride back up to Haines junction is a true hidden gem of a ride. Climbs in elevation, so be ready for possibly cold windy condition, but in june probably all fine. Discovery Yukon lodgings up north in the Kluane area is where I’ve stopped many times. Little cabins on a grass airstrip, with a bunch of old WW2 stuff laying around. You can get a home cooked meal there and some mediocre Canadian wine, if you arrange it in advance. I think you can camp there as well, in their nice grassy areas, for a fee. Note that all these places, and the alaska ferry, are usually pretty full this time of year, so arranging things in advance is pretty important. Anyway, I’ve carried on too long… didn’t mean to ramble. If any of that is of interest, i may be able to fill in more detail where desired.

  24. Sorry to hear about all the carnage down there… hope things work out ok. I’ve not had that experience of the “derecho”, but like pressureangle i had a north Texas “long and lonesome highway” experience with a storm that left a mental mark on my memory. The blue sky had the one batch of black clouds, with the highway turning toward then away from it all. Pulled over and put on the rain jacket just in case, despite it being mostly hot and blue sky. Sure enough, shockingly fast it went from “I think we’ll miss that black sky” to then some rain drops, then all hell breaking loose with big winds and massive hail. Didn’t like the idea of pulling over because there wasn’t much of a shoulder, and people wouldn’t see you if they were meandering/swerving in the lack of visibility. Hail was smashing against my helmet and within moments the pavement grooves were deep in hail ice mixed with rain water, with only the middle part of the lane between the tire grooves being somewhat visible above the level of the hail-ice. The cars were putting up huge “bow waves” of watery ice as they sloshed along. “This ain’t good”, screams the lower brain stem. Slowing down was the instinctive answer, but since i knew most motorists couldn’t see me on the bike, i instead accelerated and got ahead of the 4 wheel vehicles that had clustered together, me in the middle by chance. With luck i shot the gaps to get ahead and it was just me trying to stay upright, rather than leaving my fate to being splattered by a motorist who couldn’t see me. Maybe 30 seconds later it was back to blue sky. Another couple minutes later my drenched pants were dry. But you guys chose to live in Texas! At least luckyphil has the Great Barrier Reef, excellent wine country, beautiful coastlines, and decent espresso to show for living in place where his fellow Aussies would tell me “everything will kill you here” when we first got our orientation there at the airfields.

  25. Some proper science, that! i’ve had some good espresso in Switzerland, but in fairness I had to seek it out (google map search), and i paid dearly for it. Versus Italy where there were ok odds that I’d find a cafe just by walking around that would pull a decent shot, and it would probably be not much more than a euro (not long ago). So I’d agree, Italy wins. My complaints about Italian coffee are all focused on espresso, and about how in the past you’d never see a machine to spit out “super automatic” espresso, but now see them all too commonly. So between the places that don’t do a good job with espresso, and then the machines, the odds have gone down significantly of just walking into a place and being sure you’d get some good espresso. Can certainly still be found, it’s just tougher sledding for great-shot-seekers. Just back from a couple weeks in France, and hard to find good shots there, so i just drink the drip or the machine made espresso, and occasionally find a decent shot somewhere. Or stick to wine.

  26. So who will win first? Acosta's first or MM's next?
    1 point
  27. Most pundits are saying it is not a question of if, but when. Look at the sprint race that just finished a few moments ago. MM93 is second behind Bagnaia. Tomorrow, with Bagnaia's penalty to surrender positions on the grid, we may see the 93rd Ducati race win by the #93. Jorge Martin did not finish the sprint race. MM93 is clearly in the world championship title race too, and he is fighting for that red Ducati alongside Bagnaia next year.

  31. How very cool...if my memory is correct, we would often visit a very small village up in the mountains near Bolzano called Brez where my Dad had lots of friends from his earlier days roaming around Europe...I distinctly remember the old timers drinking a lot of Grappa, at age 13 it tasted awful To get there we had to go up a very twisty curvy road...I would love to go back there and ride a motorcycle. The food was amazing, the water very tasty, but lacking in iodine it seems as many of the older people had goiter. Really interesting trip... My parents had spent a lot of time in Ortisei (St. Ulrich) in the early 60's...so my sister was born in Bolzano...and he would go back and visit a lot. Lovely scenery all around...every road a tasty treat. Going back and forth over the Brenner several times was a treat.

  33. Yep, like a motor oil topic, but at least with this moto guzzi group, less hostile! I’d second much of whats been shared…. Italy used to be the spot for espresso when i was younger, as even the gas stations in teh 80’s (Pavesi, etc) would serve up decent or even really good espresso. I’d brag about it to my kids, then over the years most of those places replaced the barista with a machine. Gross. Had the proper chemical effect if looking to get jacked-up to rip down the auto-strata and into downtown Rome, giving the bird to everyone as a matter of course on a normal day, but the machines even from illy and other brands produce rotgut. That said, to be fair, i also have to say that those old Italian places where the whole population would be there espresso shots, i distinctly remember seeing locals get their espresso cup, then grab the sugar container and and do a long pour of white crystals. That part tends to get glossed over in my fond memories. So maybe the Jo wasn’t as great as those gas stations…. And as others have pointed out, Oz is where odds are high you can get a great shot. Love to hit New Zealand to tour and sample espresso, and i suppose the Sauv Blancs and even Pinots they’re famous for…. Vacation list for eventually.

I had an exhaust leak at the crossover pipe just in front of the timing cover. Replaced my headers with non-crossover type, problem GONE. Not saying it is the crossover, but a small exhaust leak reaked havoc with my bike.

You do not save all that much when buying green beans, but you have your choice of 50+ varieties of beans and infinite roast levels. Can do a half-pound every half hour. As the green bean seller states: "Life is too short for bad coffee"

  37. ....."In Australia, particularly in Melbourne, in my experience, if you go into a cafe and get a coffee, you have to be really unlucky to get a coffee that is not at least pretty good." Same in New Zealand.... coffee is outstanding... Starbucks open up and then have to close becuase its crap compared to the local cafes.

  38. Not long ago, I stood by while my two boys debated the priorities of making the perfect coffee. The connoisseur declared that a fresh roasting (within days) of quality beans is paramount. The chemist-son argued that the extraction time and temperature were the foremost factor. While they never could agree, I can say I have never had better coffee when either of them made me a cup. All of the coffee-making parameters remind me of The Decent Tune-up . There is really no one aspect "most important" - it is an orchestration. All elements must be present to achieve the outcome.

  40. Yes, that seems very strange. Infancy failure is anything which, after a very short period of time working, just fails, or immediately after being started. I have an easy example. I replaced my turn signal incandescent bulbs with led ones. Which implies replacing the flasher with one that works with LED lamps. I did, tested it, worked. A few days after, no more turn indicators. Just like that. I got it replaced with the same one under warranty. Same brand, same specs. Still works today. I learned about infancy failure when working for ExxonMobil in an oilfield with non-eruptive oil wells. Those wells need to be pumped to produce oil. While everyone has seen a horse head pump once in his/her lifetime, there are other pumping systems. Those pumps are lowered into the well, and pump the effluent directly from down hole. The output is a lot higher than what a horse head pump can manage, it is continuous pumping. These pumps have a limited life span, affected by many factors. Also, during the life of the well, they may need to be replaced because some conditions have changed. To install a down hole pump, you need a work over rig. It is expensive to extract the existing completion, and to run the next one. As soon as the pump has been installed, the wellhead connected, the pump is started and there is some test carried for a few hours. After that, the rig is moved to the next well. Not long after the rig has moved, something within the pump fails. The pump was tested prior to being lowered in the hole, but this kind of failures, named "infancy failures" are unpredictable. They are factored in when a field has to be installed, at planning time. Some money is put aside for this kind of repeat intervention. But even if it is built up in the budget, you always get a good rimming by the representative of the oil company for having early equipment failures on "HIS" watch!!! Sometimes, they refuse to pay for the equipment you installed!

  43. Fwiw, the 35mm negatives have worked great for me over the years but I've not yet tried it on inverted forks. And, the film thing didn't work on my Wing last Fall so I bit the bullet and bought a Seal Doctor at RevZilla. The Seal Doctor worked great! It was hard to believe how much crap the Seal Doctor pulled out over and above what the 35mm film had removed. While I do my best to routinely make sure my fork tubs are clean and free of bug goo & dirt, the newest bike I have now is in excess of 16 years old so if I do experience a fork leak that film or Seal Dr can't resolve, I really can't complain. Also, FWIW, check this guy out....

  44. Truth be told- I have entirely too many motorcycles at my house, most a result of being "too good to pass up". This is very much a, "My brain says no, my heart says yes" moment. Sincerely, I hope your NC goes off to a good home. I certainly don't need and probably shouldn't be buying another bike - but I also realize what the chances are of another NC (Much less a fully gone through, and tastefully upgraded one) appearing for sale near me is. My ergonomics issues are generally related to how 'pinched' my legs are, IE. high + rear foot pegs w/ low seat height. My go-to is a K1200R, recently picked up a black '05 999S. The 999 is actually quite nice- much more comfortable than a 1098S or 1199R. I did some looking, and the seat heights of a V11 and a 999 are similar, I suspect a V11 would likely be just fine. Iconic had a nice NTX not that long ago (And, the blue was amazing!). In my eyes, I see them as touring and commuting bikes. At present I don't have the time for touring, and I do not think I will be commuting on a bike in California... I have already learned the hard way that many late-to-work drivers believe residential stop signs are "Slow down to 30" signs.

  45. I have my audilogist custom mold these earplugs, but they are attenuaters only, no monitors. I tried in helmet communication, but found it distracting. I only use visual cues for navigation anyway, and won't even answer my phone when I am off the bike . . . edit: The only downsides I have found are once having to reshape the outer surfaces for clearance in a particularly tight fitting helmet, and discovering they filter out high pitch mechanical noises. Like when my other bike ate up its cam and rockers over time and I didn't hear it.

  46. That be me, sir. 14k mi. and third r/r. I didn't test anything. Looked at fuses and relays, checked the 'prone to break' stator wire (per docc) and then replaced the r/r. I think the r/r can be considered 'prone to fail' now as well, especially when subjected to unnecessary heat as my last one was. For some reason the arrangement on the Tenni places the r/r in the worst possible position for any cool air to reach it. I tried to find a better spot... to no avail. Considering a fan. Anyway... next time I have a no charge event I will just order another r/r. If that does not cure, I will have a spare, which I will need in future... anyway*. *this is an UN-scientific approach by a "parts replacer", but since I said 'science' first... it must be ok.
