  1. All of you are familiar with "Vespa", right? But in the South of Italy, there was another very common mode of transportation and commercial use. The "Ape". When I was based in Sicily, those would be everywhere, including at local markets, selling local produce. While browsing market place for Moto Guzzi, I got a hit for a very nice Ape. By the way, if you know what Vespa means in Italian, then you will easily get Ape. This one is in Dallas. This is a winner!!!

  2. "Behave or you go in the Ape!!!" Add doors and you almost have a Fiat 500.

  6. Very nice, and nice to know that they kept on going. Al Jackson's cousin isn't quite the drummer that Al was. He took about half of the song to get in the groove, I reckon. But maybe it was just a bad moment. What I mean is how, in a really grooving band, not everyone is actually right on the beat. A good example is this: the drummer is just a bit ahead, the bass player is on, and the guitarist is just a tiny bit behind. That is how the magic happens. And as far as Hammond players go, the best ever. And a nice bloke into the bargain, a real Gentleman...

  8. It's your fault, @docc and then I went looking where the song (which I quite liked when it came out, when I was about 13 years old) came from. Following the chain, I inevitably landed here. I've actually got this version on a DVD called "Remebering Otis" which features an Otis Redding concert in Europe, and the backing band were these blokes.

  11. @David Sandbrook David S , did you get your bike repaired / running correctly ?

  12. Mine broke on the road. I had the replacement in my tool sac. I laid the bike down on my jacket and opened the gearbox lid. Didn't even need to drain the oil.

  13. Hence, programmed obsolescence... fortunately, there is a law in France to attemtp to prevent it. Especially with household appliances which are conceived in a way they can't be repaired as it used to be possible before.

  15. I remember going to see Iggy Pop at the Berkeley community theater in the 70's, David Bowie was on Keyboard then, I didn't know who Pop was, I think he was opening for Montrose..a band I liked at the time and was there to see... I was blown away by Pops energy and creativity... I agree on Miles Davis

  16. There is something about old farts who have been playing together for years that is quite unique, and really nice. Anyway... Having posted a link to "Made in Japan" (in my opinion probably the best live recording ever) I got to thinking about "best albums". Amongst my favourites, the common factor being a certain David Robert Jones, these two: (not actually my favourite song on the album, but one can hear Mr. Jones singing backing vocals from about 3:40) and one from the man himself and perhaps not one of the "best ever", but certainly worth mention and a product involving the said Mr. Jones But when one is on the subject of "best albums ever", is this one unavoidable, albeit on a completely different track ...

  20. All y'all should tell everyone you know, and the entire web-world, to vacation in Australia. Where I live, there are volcano-fueled potholes in the road the size of a rented Hyundai. There are alligators in all the hotel swimming pools and vipers in the toilets. You can't walk down the street without an earthquake dragging you into a tornado (which happen every nine seconds). The wildfires seem to consume .com "places of interest" with alarming regularity. Don't get me started on the Murder Hornets (the size of your fist, they carry children off). Not that there are many children here as the locals eat their young. "Dogs and cats, living together. Mass hysteria ." Australia's 1500 spider species and 21 venomous snakes is a tourist paradise!

  21. touche. don't rub it in! been my list for a long time to get down that way and tour a bit. dinner last night with friends who just rode 2.5 weeks in 12 countries starting in Budapest, hitting all these little scenic places with no crowds and low prices. They've also toured NZ on bikes some years ago and loved it, saying they had 2 straight weeks of sunshine, which i think might be not quite the norm?

  22. agreed. root causation. that said, seems to me as a “professional tourist” (paid to fly places full time) that notwithstanding the eye popping and unsupportable population change, there was however the most dramatic change after the Covid isolation. That surge in tourism was (is) of epic proportions. But the press says it’s now shifting again, as folks like all us complaining about it on this thread are now looking elsewhere, sick of the crowds. so those of you with hidden gems, be careful, the hordes are coming for your gems! (or so i’m reading) I agree with the several of you that said that despite the masses in italy in the popular places, that there are still plenty of fantastic places to go there and not worry a wit about crowds. Shhhhhh…… Did a family reunion event in Norway in august, and Oslo was a bit crowded, as expected, but not bad. and then the fantastic solitude and scenery when leaving Oslo and heading to the “pretty” parts of norway (most of the country)…. awesome. hope that area doesn’t catch-on with the tourist hordes searching for less-traveled gems, as those roads and areas would not handle it well, and would be a damn shame. There were certainly more sheep than cars or people in the beautiful places we traveled with the (extended) family, which seems a proper ratio for me. Riding there, something i’ve always wanted to do, requires avoiding too much caffeine, given the low speed limits, long stretches of single-lane but 2-way roads, scenery, and loads of sheep. 23. I always think that this fact sums it up.... In the year of my birth ( 1960 ) the worlds population was 3 billion people, now in my 64th year it is 8.1 billion! The world is a very different place now and can only hope that that it doesn't sustain this sort of growth..... Cheers

  24. It's not just the crowds them selves though. AirB&B has snapped up ton loads of accommodation that used to be available to the locals. Then all the shops , bars and eateries that pander to them have pushed out businesses that catered for the locals too .Basically in Barcelona center now it's become a tourist park and the whole soul of the place has changed...with no or very little place for the people who originate from there.I guess the worst case is Venice but you can see masses of locations where tghis is happening.Tourist attractions that are simply deserted out of season...and no possibility of either buying or renting places at affordable prices either.

  25. That's rather nicely put. I'm presently in the Isle of Man which has many parallels with the north of the UK. History at every turn, and picture-postcard views in every direction. The natives are friendly too. Tourism plays a diminishing part in the economy. It's certainly not like it was in George Formby's day. So we survive by helping the super-rich stay that way, and housing most of the UK's online gambling companies...

  26. In I think 2003 a mate and his wife flew down from Sydney and stayed with us and we had stand tickets at Lukey heights. We sat there in miserable cold heavy rain and winds the only people in the stand until the MotoGP warm up was over and I said to them, we can either sit here and get soaked and cold and hope it clears or if we bail out now we can be back at my place for the start of the days racing and watch it on TV. You have come all this way, you decide I'm easy either way. They opted for the bail out. Got home an hour and a half later turned on the TV to watch the races with the island bathed in brilliant sunshine and everyone in shirt sleeves.

  27. Anyone that rides their bike to PI deserves everything they get. I've been to PI track about 1 gazzillion times over the last 40 years and I learned in the first 2 years never take the bike. I always take the car and packed in the boot is the appropriate infostructure for everything from freezing hail and gale force winds to 40 degree heat and sunstroke and everything in between. This can happen all on the same day withing an hour, no exaduration. You can't carry enough stuff on a bike to cover off those conditions comfortably. Many times I've spectated from the car for a few hours in freezing driving rain only to be applying sun block an hour later. Phil

  30. I'm seriously expecting that something will turn up, but that it wont be a serious modern sports bike. That's Aprilia's department. I reckon sooner or later we will see something in the "retro sport" direction. Like that "Paul Smart" Ducati a while back, or the Triumph Thruxton.
