  1. Not intending to be argumentative - I have recently given Ratchet's laser method a go. Just offering my results/findings. Purchased two laser levels and fabricated a jig to hold them both against rear tire exactly parallel. Set up in my lab to measure against wall just how well aligned they were and discovered that the laser beams were a) not centered perfectly in their housings and when "line" selected, it was apparent that at least one was not perpendicular (the two lasers not parallel in a parallel jig). Off I go to buy two more lasers expecting two to match. Surprise! None of them produced parallel lines. Thought, OK, I'll just use one laser - No. Being not perfectly centered, switching from side to side would also mean inverting even if only using the point, not the line. These were not the cheapest nor the most expensive levels ($35 ea). Tried it out on the bike. With everything set in place, centered the swing arm. Locating pins offset by 2mm. Laser says spot on. Off comes the laser rig, on goes my trusty standby, the flourescent light tube. Bungee it on each side of rear tire. Check offset. Off 1.5mm in same direction as pins are offset. Hmmm. Set pins equidistant from chops, measure with flourescent tubes. Centered well within 1mm. Result - return all levels, huck laser alignment apparatus into the recycle bin. If going this route, be aware that there are some VERY large tolerances in retail laser levels. cheers, Rj
  2. Very nice! If I wore watches, I'd buy one. Good luck with the endeavor. Rj
  3. Easy to make from alu flat bar. I used my stock ones for the inside profile and drew the outside to what I wanted. Drill press, bandsaw, file, and less than 3 hours including layout. Rj
  4. I should REALLY make a better drawing. Forgot about that after I drew it hastily in the few minutes before heading home on a Friday. Since then I've found this inexpensive bearing removal kit. http://www.shop.bevelheaven.com/detail.aspx?ID=797 Rj
  5. This guy must be living right! Just about the luckiest SOB you're gonna find! Rj
  6. In the case of my story, the person was not charged as a farmer has the right to put up barbed wire anywhere on his farm property. All he needs do is state that the wire went up for the purpose of keeping cows off the river. I have no idea if there were any cows on that pasture at the time but again, only needs to state that he was going to bring them there. No charges were ever brought - they would never stick.. I grew up in a small (2500) farm community in Manitoba. It is home to the Canadian Power Tobaggan Championships (F1). This story filled the local paper for months. It would be hard to find someone who doesn't have a sled there, and harder still to find someone who'd never run the river. The only repercussion was having to carry the knowledge that he ended the life of his neighbor's 16 year old kid. As MC riders (applies to sleds too) we have to avoid assuming that everything today is the same as it was yesterday. A new pothole in the middle of your favorite corner could have the same result if you're riding hard. Rj
  7. I see. Now that you've got your Hog and your shed, you've risen above us lowly Guzzista. Hope you can still find time for us wee folk. Rj
  8. HEY! I used to be one o' them wild sledders. Raced a couple seasons too. I have a similar tale re barbed wire. We used to ride the local river (as did MANY) not drunk (ok, sometimes...) regularly. There was one spot at the rapids (never really froze) where one had to go on the river bank, between two trees and back onto the river. Problem arose when the person who owned the land didn't want people coming 10 ft onto his land (cow pasture fer cryin out loud) so instead of putting up a sign or visible blockade, he strings up barbed wire. You know what happened. No charges pressed as here you can do whatever you want on your land. Sure, the guy was legally in the right. But did he really have to kill someone to make his point. Rj
  9. pssst Ben- They're all weapons. Sticks - not just fer pokin dead things. See earlier post re: sticks and sleep. Belfry's back! Brown hairstreaks... yup, have had that problem. Rj
  10. That would be why Google couldn't help me. Thanks for the links Ben! Rj
  11. Nope. Quebec is determined to become the 51st state. Enjoy them. Rj
  12. What cane store is that? My parents went to Ireland last fall to look up relatives. My father only wanted to bring back a shileighleigh like his father had and was very upset that all he could find was tourist crap. I'd like to find him one if anyone over there knows a place... Rj
  13. Since I posted my horrid drawing of the tool I made to knock out wheel bearings I've found this little gem. One will be winging its way to me shortly! http://www.shop.bevelheaven.com/detail.aspx?ID=797 Makes bearing removal a snap! Good for the wheels and swing. Rj
  14. Yes. They even splurged for sealed type! Rj
  15. No No! No set up. It warms the cockles to know that your scalpel wielding perp would have recieved at worst a bit of flavour to the face and a knock upside the head. On this continent they'd be drawing straws to see who gets to plunk him in the head with their pistol of choice. Seems to be a fair bit of support for the shileighleigh (sp? that's how my father spells it ). We'll just keep the seal bit quiet. We use the pointy sticks for that. You're onto me. Are you bucking for detective? Better change back to the "Andy smurf" avatar... Rj
  16. I find it interesting that this diversion was caused by (insert anonymous moderator here)'s delightful stories about perp beating. I'm pleased that my choice of weapon (ahhh the shileighleigh is a beautiful bit of kit) hasn't offended anyone. Rj
  17. short stroke... begging to be blown... forcibly aspirate... pimp bike... used condom in the sun... C-ya - I gotta go hit a porn site... Rj
  18. YF* with two tablespoons of moly, three teaspoons of Marvel Mystery, and a shot or two of Sea Foam. cheers, Rj * Yak Fat
  19. Stick beating is just sooooo much more personal. Do it while they sleep and they'll always be afraid to fall asleep again. Much better than an anonymous plug in the cranium. Rj
  20. er... which red??? Rj
  21. Well... I'm out then. There are ways to deal with people like this but the best way is to beat them with a stick as they sleep. Rj
  22. The reason I ask is that I'll be building 3 motors (V11 big ends, 261 chevy, '58 merc outboard) this year, my current TW is a bar type that is massive and older than me. Not really reliable under 20ft/lbs. Saw a newish Snap-on electronic at a pawn shop for $125 cdn. Another $75 to have it calibrated... sounds tempting. Any reason NOT to buy it? They're over $400 here new. cheers, Rj
  23. I'll be milling aboot Sat morn. I'll try to leave my # at the MG booth with Jim. Hope to meet up sometime... Rj
  24. Looking at upgrading my TW. Considering Snap-On Tech2fr100 electronic TW. Anyone have any experience with these? Wondering how the compare with click type wrt staying in calibration and long term functionality. TIA Rj
  25. Don't make me post pictures of my man-boobs. Definitely a bug - saw him commin'. Rj
