Thanks Jaap! Now I can cancel that doctor's appointment. This list really does have the answer for everything! I was worried there for a while... Rj

Another oil change related question

I'm just messin with you ratchet - forget I even mention K&N in this thread... I felt that the K&N Duramax test discussion ended with Jim's post #22. Seems to me any test that claims that there is no benefit to increasing airflow to an air pump has to have an ulterior motive of some sort. That's just plain physics. I was suspicious of how the data was reported, seems awfully slanted towards AC. Suspicious that a factory filter was found to be so superior while K&N, likely the largest competitor to a stock air filter in any vehicle was found to be so poor. (not saying that the K7N is the bomb, for certain I agree that a filter that lets more air in will also let in more dirt.) I just find this test to be suspicious to one who is inherently suspicious of all internet information. It's scope and extent of its testing was not great enough to make the statements they concluded. I believe the "information highway" is rapidly becoming the "misinformation highway" , an unregulated medium in which advertisers are free to post anything they wish in any disguise they think will sell their product. There are no internet fact checkers. Rj -

Ratchet is right, you should get a K&N air filter. Make sure you oil it liberally. Rj -
Precisely why I every time I see one. Tear off the fairing and bolt on the first headlight ya find - a fine thing to do to any bike misfortunate enough to have her beauty hidden by Tupperware. Rj

Another oil change related question

I have already analyzed the K&N thread. I would rather argue creation vs. evolution with the pope. I still think that test was bunk. Black is much too dark for the oil, and Ratchet is right that it may be time for a new air filter. Get a K&N - you'll never regret it. Rj -
I've got three bloody filter wrenches for the pig. All of them slip once the filter gets oil on it. Changes have become much less stressful once I switched to the screwdriver method. Don't use the screwdriver to install the new filter... Rj

Are you on crack?? You could beat a lab till near death with a baseball bat and it will still think you are the most wonderful thing in the world. That's more like it. Rj

Bollocks you do! I'm assuming the rest of the statement is therefore also false. But man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward. -Job 5:7 Rj Gentlemen may prefer blondes, but the bad boys are much less discerning... and have a much better time on a Saturday night.

Just remember that the rolled up sock goes in the front, not the back... Rj

You would need to purchase not only the molds, but the rights to produce the body work. That might prove much more expensive than the molds themselves. Making molds of your body work similarly does not give you the right to reproduce someone else's designs. You Americans should be well aware of lawsuits and such... Rj

Might be. Yes, I'd go so far as to say that, provided there was not a number of studies which come up with different results... For me to consider the validity of a study, it must be published by a credible body, and not an internet page. In this air filter study I see a few things that are misleading (graphically) unless one takes a close look. eg. the first bar graph at a glance appears that there is a massive difference between the filters, but if you look at the scales, the difference between the best (99.93%) and the worst (96.8%) is a marginal at best difference. Yet this is indicated as a huge difference in the graph. I also have to question their ability to differentiate to 2 decimal places... I also find it extremely suspicious that the test vehicle (of which there was only ONE) is a GM product, and the best filter in all tests was aslo a GM PRODUCT! Hmmmm. This is hardly a study to claim any kind of definitive results from. Rj

Hey, I hardly ever contribute any value, and I leave my posts up... I stand by that though... Engineering taught me to calculate everything to the nth degree, and then double it just to make sure... Statistics taught me that you can take data from any study and manipulate it to say/prove exactly what you want it too. Electronics taught me that what I learned last year is no longer applicable this year. Trying to get a new medical device to pass the FDA requirements taught me that you ONLY mention the things your study discovers if they prove what you want them to prove. If you get results you don't want, find some way of discrediting the study, and design a new test that will give you the results you want. The truth may be in there somewhere... Rj

Fer God's sake Ben! The filter goes on your bike, not your baby!!! Rj

You guys have been awfully quiet lately... how is the Christmas pageant coming along? Will it be a musical this year, or interpretive dance? Rj

I regard Science and Law as best guesses to date. My education into Science, Mathematics, Electronics, Mechanics and Engineering have led me to the belief that we know fook all about most things we think we've figured out. Rj

After seeing one in person at the Seattle show... 1. That exhaust can is freakin' horrible. That kills the left side. This new exhaust does nothing for me. Looks like a product of my garage. 2. The right side, I can't get over the massiveness of the enclosed drive... and the placement of the oil cooler is atrocious. 3. I don't like the ass on the Triumph speed triple, and I don't like this one either. IMO it just lacks the flow and lines inherent in an Italian bike... you know, the lines that just capture the light and reflections, and your eye, wether you like the bike or not, there is always that little bit of Italian. I just don't see it in the Greaso... Rj

So you've lived in Canada then! My velocity stacks do a fine job of keeping the sparrows out of the carbies. The other crap rinses out with the oil. Can we talk about oil again??? There are at least two schools of thought on every topic - one man's idiot is another man's genious. For every oil article that says use dino juice, there is one that says use synth. One study says to change your oil as often as possible, another says that this will damage the engine... IMHO there is no such thing as a reliable source or study. Rj

Ya! The stickers! I forgot the stickers! When's the last time an AC Delco filter came with a little sumthin sumthin for the tool crib? Rj :

I try to stick with what I know from personal experiences... I've learned to be skeptical of everything I read on the net. Even here on this forum I've found some great info and a lot of trurh, but there have been times when the info wasn't correct - see the Yamaha springs sitting in the corner of my garage... the 57 was a slug, even with the K&N. the difference between the K&N and a fresh filter was noticeable, especially when I stuck my foot in her going up hill. I always washed and reoiled it when I changed the oil, never seemed to get that dirty or plugged. my only experience with K&N... Rj

Obviously sponsored by AC Delco... More flow = more go! It's an air pump fer crimey. Better cylinder fill is better performance. period. I don't even know what filter I put in the Goose... But my 57 chevy pickup with a stock straight six and a single barrel carb sure had more power on the hills with the K&N. It was an obvious difference. Rj
