  1. I have heard stories of that same seal splitting even when installed correctly. I was on borrowed time without knowing the oil pressure. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. The seal between the pump and timing cover fell off when I was refitting the cover. It fell into my oil pan and I never knew it. Until it was too late. Failure had nothing to do with the rods. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. There were a bad batch of rods in 1974, I think. You also have to keep in mind that Commandos get ridden way more than Triumphs or BSAs so they are going to have more reported issues. Bikes don’t break if they don’t get ridden. I’d always been against an oil pressure gauge but due to the recent expensive lesson I’ve changed my mind...
  4. Do you mean the crankcase or the con rod? The answer is no. I was flying down the freeway when it went bang. Eerily it was rush hour and that freeway is always packed, for some miraculous reason I was all alone when it happened. I safely got to the side of the road and the freeway filled back up again.
  5. I think I know where the oil leak is coming from...
  6. Yes, plan is to see if the hole can be repaired so I can save the original engine. I have plenty of spare crankcases if I need a different set.
  7. It's going back to full boy racer spec this time. I mean after I sort out the engine thing...
  8. The rod didn't fail, the lack of oil caused a seize and then it cascaded from there. The stock rods are actually quite stout.
  9. I'm finally getting around to my Norton. There was a bit of an "incident" a couple years ago so I parked it and have been enjoying the Guzzis in the meantime. Let start out. Oh, and if you're squeamish, don't scroll down more... This fell out. It's a piece of the connecting rod. See where we are going? Getting the patient prepped. Upon further exam we may have a small problem... I have a replacement engine I've been working on. But at some point I'll try to rescue this one. Of course the side with the hole has the serial number on it. If you want to follow along you can here: https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/heart-transplant.25880/
  10. There are two things the Italians lie about... horsepower and weight. Published numbers from the factory for either should be first laughed at and second ignored.
  11. Heck, I'll send you some if you want just a couple. I bought a whole set at one time.
  12. Dave was out here in Oregon for a bit a year or two ago, I guess it sounds like he's back in Ohio? I literally didn't make one Guzzi event last year. How sad is that?
  13. It's a shame all the Moto International original owners and staff have retired, and MI itself then shuttered after the new owners didn't maintain the same customer service and passion. Or they actually looked at the books and decided they couldn’t make it work.
  14. I would not use actual weatherpack connectors. They are way too bulky. http://www.cycleterminal.com/amphenol-at-dt-connectors.html
  15. What type of plier / tool is used to crimp these terminals ? https://www.amazon.com/IWISS-Weather-Pack-Terminal-Crimping/dp/B0732W6HQR/ref=sr_1_57?ie=UTF8&qid=1546212291&sr=8-57&keywords=crimper+terminal https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07476C1LD/ref=psdc_553392_t1_B0732W6HQR
  16. It’s not in the workshop manual?
  17. You are definitely in the wrong place as encouraging collection expansion is a competitive sport here.
  18. NADA is particularly horrible about pricing. I’d insist on comp values and an appraisal and not go off a book. And insist on an estimate. Remember Progressive isn’t there to help you. More importantly how are you? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  19. I can't. Won't clear the fairing. https://www.amazon.com/Oumurs-Motorcycle-Cylinder-Reservoir-Universal/dp/B0799JT9D5/ref=pd_sbs_263_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0799JT9D5&pd_rd_r=12d3b707-066c-11e9-a7c6-2fa816d9f586&pd_rd_w=WvrAQ&pd_rd_wg=JvKkU&pf_rd_p=7d5d9c3c-5e01-44ac-97fd-261afd40b865&pf_rd_r=5NC91F6BX5K7WY9P2RZ7&psc=1&refRID=5NC91F6BX5K7WY9P2RZ7
  20. Not possible to have it too clean. But one particle in the wrong place can be deadly. I'd take off the oil cooler and clean the crap out of it. Anywhere that oil has been should be suspect.
  21. The only reason to use carbs on a bike build is for the retro look.
  22. It depends on if you think the added complexity is worth the benefits. I think using a MOSFET regulator makes sense, clear benefits for the same price as a the SCR ones.
  23. Uh, have you ever tried to tune Dellortos?
  24. I know where I'm sending my cans to...
  25. http://www.vintageconnections.com/Products/Detail/151?fbclid=IwAR14g6bIYTXMPj2ZtP4rxBwrKcYqPBIRg8_WoVFkWkr_7oLlRCH-86Zw_xc This guy I know now has the plugs available for the Shindengen type regulators.
