  1. I heard back from Electrosport: It's most likely the ESR515. The good news is that it's a plug and play for the Guzzi. The bad news is that its a traditional shunt (thyristor) just like the stock one. So it will fail again at some point due to the heat. Perhaps they use better components but basically they get hot not because they are dumping the energy from the alternator but because the thyristors require a lot of current to even work. Electrosport says to get a MOSFET regulator to use a ESR550 but you will need to mod the wiring and you will lose the charge light (I assume you can hack something to get the charge light to work again). https://www.electrosport.com/products/esr550-regulator-rectifier-suzuki The good news is the ESR550 is only $109 and once installed should last the life of the bike... or you, whichever is longer. I suspect you guys want me to get that one and document the re-wiring (ie. be the guinea pig)?
  2. I was pretty shocked at when the voltmeter read 17v a couple times that I wasn't standing at the side of the road.
  3. The drone? Absolutely. Still doesn’t mean I wasn’t nervous flying under those bridges! It’s got obstacle avoidance front, back and downward but not upwards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Three Covered Bridges and a Goose. I gave a preview of this ride in the Overcharging thread. https://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20562 but now you get the video: Depoe Bay, Oregon. World's smallest navigable harbor which I guess it means you can turn a boat around in it? Also great for whale watching (more on the ocean side but I think they have had a whale sneak into the harbor on occasions). And it was misty and cold. Colder and wetter than I had hoped for. At least it cleared up a little once I got north on the coast. Marys Peak, highest point on the Oregon Coast Range.
  5. At 19k I assume so.
  6. Super simple video shows the difference between a Shunt and MOSFET regulator. Technically the MOSFET is also a shunt but the transition between charging and not charging happens quickly. Ok, finally a great, easy to read and understand explanation: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forums/knowledge-base-40/mosfet-regulator-rectifiers-why-how-25117/

  8. This seems to be the best solution I’ve found so far. https://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20106
  9. PM on your way.
  10. I’m still researching but I believe there are two types of regulators. Shunt types take and excess voltage and turn it into heat, the alternator still puts out full power. The other kind, I think there are series and MOSFETs, will “turn off” the alternator. Reducing load on the entire system. I’m guessing the shunt types are the ones that fail frequently for obvious reasons. Please someone correct me if I got the above wrong. I’m researching as fast as I can.
  11. Which electrosport model is it? I sourced this EnduraLast EDL450 from EuroMotoElectrics (Colorado, USA) for my fourth regulator. I am thinking this is the "OEM-style" replacement? (Not yet installed as it appears my third is yet in service even after 30-35,000 miles.) Have you used a MOSFET regulator yet and if no, why not?
  12. Which electrosport model is it?
  13. I have two. One is built into my heated grip controller. BikeMaster Heated Grips With LCD Switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NYBZ4CQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_cz7RBbZ6WGJ5R The other one is from Battery Tender. Battery Tender 081-0157 Black Quick Disconnect Plug with LCD Voltage Display https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DJ5KE9A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Xz7RBbRBV4RCE I thought maybe the grip controller was lying to me so I plugged in the other one. Got a similar result.
  14. Corey, any updates? I’d really like to try one of these.
  15. Does anyone make a voltage regulator that actually lasts? I get about 12.1v at idle and normally 13.8v at 4k rpm. Someone said they get 13.8v at idle. Also the Electrosport site recommends this regulator. Why are y’all using a different one? https://www.electrosport.com/collections/street-motorcycles-moto-guzzi-2001-v11-sport/products/esr515-regulator-rectifier-ducati-1-phase-charge-light-output
  16. Made it home, no drama, aside from being tired after a 12 hour ride. Ok, so lots of drama but at least the battery didn’t explode, the lights all work and the bike still runs. The voltage would fluctuate from about 13.8v and then would randomly spike up to the upper 16s. Now I need to read up on voltage regulator options. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. 120 miles to get home. Battery was due for a replacement. Hopefully nothing else besides the regulator needs replaced. So far everything seems to be working fine. Lights, heated grips, so crossing my fingers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Such a shame because it’s a gorgeous day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Battery is not hot. What will actually happen if 16v goes to the battery? What else might fail?
  20. Misbehaving again. Yes, there is an extra ground to the regulator. Regulator is warm but not burning hot.
  21. Seems to be behaving. You’ll be glad it is when you see the video I’m getting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. I mean 13.8v normally. Using my wisdom I’m still going. Voltage dropped back down. What’s the worse that could happen? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. So I decided to head south instead of north. I’ve only been gone an hour and I noticed the voltmeter is at 17v. It’s usually around 14.5v when cruising. Bike seems to be running a little rougher. Common sense would say turn around and go home. Bad voltage regulator? I don’t see anything unusual and the battery isn’t hot. 24. They just posted yesterday that they aren’t closing the doors until Oct. 15th. For those of you who voted for me to visit probably haven’t enjoyed Seattle traffic on a Friday. Seattle already has some of the worse traffic in the country and it just gets twice as bad on Fridays.
  25. It would not be the first regret I had to live with. Considering this means fighting a lot ton of Seattle traffic it's going to be a lot sitting on a freeway. I'm glad I did go to Raber's (vintage British parts place) when I got the Greenie because they also recently closed. Considering Dave won't be at MI I'm still questioning the value of stopping by. It'll be 8 hours of freeway riding (and traffic) or I could go ride somewhere fun.
