  1. I recently replaced the cam chain cover gasket because it was leaking and I noticed the timing sensor was leaking (again/still). So, I bought a replacement sensor & oring from our popular MG aftermarket parts retailer. I applied Permatex 300 gasket sealer to the new sensor & oring then installed them. Now at about 500 miles later, I 've got a leak from the sensor lower fastening screw...it seems. My next course of action is to get another new oring, remove the sensor, clean up everything, install new oring, goop up the whole mess with Permatex 300 (including screws if screw holes are open ended into timing chest) & reinstall. This is getting to be an annoying pita. Hey Docc....if you're reading this...Is the #112 oring the same size as the oem oring for this sensor? Thanks, Art
  2. FWIW, I put a Shorai in my '72 CB450 back in 2010. I sold the CB450 in the winter of '12, the battery had no problem cranking the engine in a 38F. garage. When I first got the battery I thought it was a joke because it weighted nearly nothing but for the 2 years I had it in the bike it worked as expected. Yeah, the CB450 was another bike I regretted getting rid of. Art
  3. I goofed, didn't look at this illustrated parts breakdown for the alternator prior to pulling the front cover otherwise I would have definitely replaced the #9 oring. I realized the oring was present when I was going back together and the oring offered a slight drag while sliding onto the shaft. Anyway, if you're pulling the front cover, replace the oring imho. Also, my spacer did not have a chamfer for an additional oring but a flange, the only way to remove the spacer is to remove the crank seal too or pull the cover. ... both after stator/rotor removal of course. FWIW, I have about 200 miles on my Lemans since timing cover gasket replacement, went back with a "genuine" Guzzi metal/composite gasket and no leaks detected nor was gasket sealer used upon installation. This gasket lined up perfect with bolt holes & bosses. The same distortion/misaligned bolt holes I encountered with an aftermarket composite gasket I have also observed with a paper/fiber gasket from another dealer which leads me to think that whomever is making "knock off" gaskets used a poor example for a template.   5. Hey Speedfrog, Yeah, the foil tape was pricey ($20) but I think everything is expensive no matter how inexpensive it is. Luckily, the cloth/fabric type insulation on my tank is in good condition and just needed fresh foil tape on the seams & gaps. Art
  6. FWIW, I purchased my heat resistant foil tape at Autozone. The tape is distributed by https://www.designengineering.com/ they also sell other types of heat & sound proof materials. Art
  7. I had my tank off last week to replace cam position sensor & install heat resistant foil tape to the exterior underside of the tank. I had a minor struggle getting the tank pushed back onto the support pucks up front and remember seeing the photo above ... LOL! I've not had issues before when I've had the tank off and went back to install it, crazy eh??!! Art
  8. .....Way too late for that! After conferring with several of you guys in both public & private, I installed the MG latest & greatest cam chain cover gasket dry on wednesday. Then proceeded to replace the leaking timing sensor too after dealing with that pos for a few years now. Oil had been making it way up through the center of the sensor and out between sensor molded housing and cable casing. I also replaced some missing heat insulating foil on the exterior bottom of the fuel tank. So, I gassed it up Friday and rode a few miles. There doesn't seem to be any leaks oil or fuel (yet). I did the shift spring thing last Fall, no leaks at the trans either, I hope i'm hitting a lucky patch with these recent repair tasks. I'm happy I didn't break the fuel tank fittings when working with the tank. Today, I washed it and maybe, weather permitting, I'll be able to ride again soon.   9. Hi Al, I installed the bulb last Fall and have no idea what kind on longevity it will have. The packaging has the CREE LED name on it but cannot confirm it is a genuine CREE product. Additionally, I just bought a Sylvania LED 194 bulb to replace the incandescent pilot bulb and hope to install it soon. I plan on checking the current draw of both headlight & pilot light combined when I get a minute and post my numbers. I installed an Auxito brand LED in my '87 Lemans, it fit fine whereas, it would not fit the V11 Lemans...base was too thick and overall length was 8-10mm too long as I recall. 4/30/23 Update: The LED bulb described in the pic below draws 0.45 amps on low, 0.65 amps on high. I thought these values were way too low but when I did the math for a 9w bulb (W divided by V = A), it was in the neighbrhood. The originalH4 had a 4.18 amp draw. I wonder how bright this will be at night??!! Glad I'm not out after dark. 7/6/23 Update: The LED bulb described in the pic below has failed, I'm now in pursuit of another. The Auxito bulb I installed in my '87 Lemans draws 1.7a on low beam, 2.1a on high. I've been out after dark with this bike, I was racing against sunset and sunset won, The Auxito bulb provided me with plenty of light imho. Art

  11. I bought one of those sealed units for my '72 Eldo, I think it was $40. It was advertised for use with motorcycles & Jeeps. I really don't care about lthe ight pattern, I primarly bought it because of it's low current demand and it makes the bike more conspicuous imho. I don't ride that bike at night either so it's perfect for what I'm using it for. Also, I bought off brand LED H4's for both my Lemans. They're mc specific, have thin metal bases like conventional H4's, fit perfect, work great and picked up a couple tenths of a volt overall system voltage. I still have to replace the pilot bulbs with LEDs because the incandescent pilots cast a yellowish hue against the more white LEDs. Art

  14. Hi Speedfrog, I got the GU05001231 from Cadre Cycle in Cincy. "it doesn’t seem to be of the garden-variety type item"......Yep, I have created a headache for myself...use old style paper, fudge on an aftermarket that would definitely leak (imho) or go with what the parts book supercedes to which is GU05001231. On a positive note, I'm fortunate that the Lemans is not my only bike or only means of transportation.
  15. Thanks Dooc! It is sorta what i was thinking but still figured I'd see what you guys thought. Funny thing is that I put a the original style 12001200 gasket on my Eldo 4 years ago and about 4k miles ago with zero issues and the original gasket on my Lemans took 20 + years to begin leaking although the bike only has 12k miles on it. So, imho a replacement 12001200 gasket is still a viable option in my pea size brain. However. I kinda like the looks of Guzzi 's latest iteration (GU05001231) as shown in the previous post. Art
  16. Hi All, FWIW, I still have my Lemans apart. The brand X metal core gasket (left) wouldn't fit properly, it wouldn't line up with cover holes and wouldn't lay flat when dry fit to cover. So, I bought a genuine Guzzi metal core gasket from a dealer and it is alot different from the brand X. The genuine Guzzi gasket is metal core too. Plus, it is corrugated somewhat (right), Has anyone used one of these and if so, did you use gasket sealer? Any special installation instructions that I should be aware of? Thanks, Art
  17. The above is a partial view of two timing cover gaskets I bought for my Lemans. The gasket on the left is an aftermarket item that does not line up with bolt holes, when dry fit it distorts and will not lay flat on cover mating surface. Since I wasn't confident about using this gasket I bought a "genuine" Guzzi gasket (#05001231) on the right. The gasket on the right fits, lines up with bolt holes, lays flat when dry fit, etc. Now the question is... should this be installed with or without gasket sealer???!!!
  18. Yeah, my 2012 Wee Strom Adv. came with bag lids not keyed alike with bag bracket locks but Suzuki did include two extra tumblers that were keyed to the lids so all I had to do was swap out the bracket locks. Why didn't the dealer do it you ask! Who knows. Art
  19. Audiomick ....That's pretty cool & cheap! I'd still try swapping relays no matter what the test results because I have no self control or faith in gadgets (lol). However, I have to admit I bought a $25 digital battery/charging sys/starter tester that I'm pretty impressed with .... it was an ebay or amazon buy. Chuck... The Siemens relays will float, I packed them in a baggie in case one of my Guzzi riding buds has a failure on the road! Art
  20. Hi Docc, Ok, I goofed...my original relays were Siemens A1001-A402, not Omrons. You indicated the CIT's were ok for use in the '02-'05 so, I'm thinking I'll leave the CIT's in place because the Siemens relays are 20+ years old. While the Siemens relays have not seen alot of action, my Lemans only has 12K miles on it, I'd hate to have an age related failure. Thoughts? Also, fwiw, my headlight & starter solenoid are on dedicated relay circuits now. Thanks, Art
  21. Hi All, Ok, I'm late to the relay party. Last May I replaced my oem Omrons with CIT A11CSQ12VDC1.5R ($2.50/ea). Now, the general concensus is the Picker PC782-1C-12S-R-X are the relays to have as oem Omrom replacements. Am I understanding this correctly? If so, I'll go buy a batch before I get into more trouble. As always, thanks for the help & advice, Art
  22. I tried to install a metal core cam chain cover gasket but the gasket doesn't fit very well so back to the drawing board.

    The more bolts the greater the distortion....I have no confidence that this will work/seal if I use it.
