This pic must be a gag! I practiced as a nurse for 45 years, started out in in a busy K.C. trauma E.R. How are you infusing what i assume is grease via clear plastic tubing into the U-joint? Not!? -

Noticed these 2 things... Does the splined area look soupy to you? I didn't sniff for Hypoid smell. If this signals a leak, where's it coming from? And a degraded breather hose. -

Ok, a few shots of the carcass. i've removed as much as i think is necessary to begin the deep cleaning which i'll start this weekend. Docc's to do list when the rear end's off is printed and on the work bench. Thank goodness i guess that i've got February through April to get things back together. I'm looking forward to the new Road 6's and the Mistral satin round muffs were shipped today from MGC. Not sure how i'm going to freshen up the cosmetic damage from being the neglect of put away salty wet, something to think about and i welcome your suggestions. At least when i'm done, i'm not going to have a show bike that i have to keep in spit and polish condition. -

Ok, more pics. I think i've dismantled, loosened or freed up about as much as i think needs 2b done to deep clean, inspect and service what's needed. Looking out my shop window past the pile 'o LeMans parts, it's snowing, 8ºF here in Laporte, Colorado, but i'm warm in my cozy little shop. Bring it on! -

@gstallons by wheel bearing grease, to you mean that thick heavy dark brownish grease? I've been using Belray Waterproof in the white/blue plastic tub, but have started using Lucas Red "N" Tacky a few yeasrs ago... -

@gstallons @Scud @docc @audiomick i have the swing arm removed. I'll inspect hte lower shock mount and report back. Will start cleaning away the greasy, salty grime. The swing arm double row bearings are almost dry, no water damage, don't turn easy but are smooth. My bearing puller slide hammer isn't heavy enough to pull the bearings. Wonder if heat gun might help... Removed the outer cage, will thoroughly wash them out, see how they turn and if free and if smooth, thinking i will repack with new grease. I'll stay with the factory shock, i'm tired of dumping money into more bikes than i care to remember over the past six decades, so a full thorough inspection and service is all this poor old crusty hag gets from me. I've saved her from an untimely death, so she'll love me well for what i do give her. Thanks for the comprehensive lists of things to inspect and service, and the tip on the clutch bleeder. I'll post before and after pics of the cleaning. My spirits dampened having to dive deep into this bike, i never thought it, but i've gone to the dark side and become a car guy for the first time in my 73 years. Last September, bought a '94 Corvette in exquisitely clean condition which has thoroughly excited my passions... -

@gstallons mea culpa "ff" = fuel filter (: wrapped in tinfoil, probably an attempt to deflect heat, are the '02 LeMans prone to vapor lock with an external fuel pump? -

Hello to All who are so genrously sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience. Saturday i got the front end back on and got the carcass blocked up to remove the swing arm. This morning (Sunday) when i put eyes on the LeMans, to my dismay, there was a tiny puddle of oil under the RH fork. So, pulled the fork and massive chunk of the seal's lip was torn, careful as i was, it happened. So, i should have seals, fuel filter by week's end. Once i have the front end back on, then i will block up again and move into the swing arm removal. Thanks for mentioning those pins for setting up wheel alignment. One thing i don't have is a laser, is that something i can buy anywhere and then attach it to a magnetic base i use for holding a dial indicator? Another picture, this one portrays how this bike has been treated by whoever worked on it before my ownership. It's obvious somebody had their hamfists throughout the bike, a NAPA ff wrapped in tin foil. No gaskets between exh.pipes and heads. Are rubber parts generally available or are they nla? There are a couple boots elsewhere on the bike that are cracked, torn, degraded. To be sure, i will be cleaninging all the electrical connectors, with a little emery paper on eyelets and DeoxIT D5S-6 for the connectors. -

Gentlemen, thank you. The old Coats 220 gave me a bit of a workout removing the rear tire. I'll get the front tire m&b then back on forks so i can get the weight off center stand and then i can proceed further dismantling on the rear end of this old gal. -

Thank you gentlemen for your replies. Yes, will continue this deep dive and THANK YOU for informing me what to look for. i have the rear driveshaft separated from the diff. Do i remove the side plate to remove the front half of driveshaft? Otherwise, i shall remove the swing arm and of course the front half of shaft will come out. for the moment, a couple questions. 1. Looking in the parts book at driveshaft, i don't see the thin O-ring listed. Is there a pn for this? Purchase where? We have a Guzzi dealer in town. 2. This morning when i was surveying the carnage, i noted this 12x21x27 spacer on the lift. I don't remember for the life of me removing it from anywhere... (i AM a sharp 73 year old). Where does this spacer fit? Pic attached. -

an update with a couple pics. have removed more parts. i have decided my approach will be a combination preservation/conservation and not a restoration of which i've been down that road so many times i've grown tired of the effort it takes (and$$$$$$$$). What marks show on this project are going to be a testimony to what has happened to the bike. I plan to cut all the zip ties and remove fasteners holding parts to the frame, and apply soap and water from a bucket to wash things clean and dry things off with rags. and then i'll do as little rattle can as i can get away with. Rusted fasteners i will run through a stiff wire wheel to get to bare steel and then i will Parkerize for a durable grayish/black finish. A couple questions about the drive shaft. Is the shaft two parts, connected by male and female halves that slide back and forth with movement of the swing arm? I guess i should look at my parts book and service manual... obviously there's a telescoping tube and i imagine there's a bunch of crud hidden where i can't see. Not knowing otherwise, is it necessary to disconnect the drive shaft from the transmission case and the rear end? Again, i guess i should refer to me service manual... And, finally, is the shaft is "timed," do i need to make note of alignment of the two halves in which they separate? On to the swing arm rotational surfaces... i can't imagine i shouldn't pull the shaft, clean up whatever crud and old factory grease is in there? i'll try to make this as entertaining as i can, and thanks in advance for your help. -
