Guess I forgot to say the bike is 02 LeMans so I have the twin plate clutch design.Thought there might be something else to acomplish while the gearbox is out. andy

So while I have the tranny out I thought this might be a good time to loose a couple of pounds of flywheel inertia. Anyone else out there had this done ....who did it ....how much...results....good,bad, indifferent? lemme know andy

hopefully this is a picture of the springs and rachet arms andy

The part #'s came direct from the parts cat., although I can't seem to find the # for the smaller ID spring. So......? For simpler terms ...I put big spring on big rachet =no coil bind Little spring on little rachet = no coil bind Big spring on little rachet = no coil bind Little spring on big rachet = major coil bind I'm off to search part #s again andy

Just to set the record straight for the US layperson....there are no tubes or hoses inside the 6-speed transmission. What gets replaced, and what the factory recall kit contains are 2 syncos(flexible coupling) and the spacer which is part of the cush drive on the output shaft. As I discovered, there are 2 springs and 2 shifter rachet pawls. My spring broke at 24000. Ihave a big spring on the big boss and I have a little spring on a little boss, which one to use I cant say? Anyone who has these gearboxes apart should also examine the cage needle bearings on both of the gearset layshafts. Everything operates ok but the cage can be cracked. I can't see an obvious problem so maybe its a Luigi supplier problem...the cages are kinda puny..... And in case anyone wonders, I have done ten of these tranny recalls( which is more than my share ) later andy

It seems this issue has been dead for awhile and I hesitate to piss off the Guzzi gods but here goes. My rachet spring broke at 24,000 miles . I did the quick fix ,pulled the side covr off and slapped a new spring in and was on my way. Now I have pulled the tranny to fix the weeping of fluid. I found the top 6mm bolt on the intermediate plate as I call it, loose. I think there are 4 6mm and 4 or 5 5mm bolts here. Anyway, I have decided to have everything in the gearbox coated with a friction reducing coating. As I pulled all the gears and syncros(flexible coupling for the Italians out there )apart, I dicovered 5 broken needle bearing cages. I can't pin point what happened here, I'm still working on that. Shift Springs.I have three rachet arms and two springs. Spring # 92295702 has a 16.93mm hole in the center. Spring #04238300 has a 19mm hole in the center. Rachet arm #04235101 has a 15.03mm boss for the spring. Rachet arm #012351300 has a 16.25mm boss for the spring. I can not locate where I got the smaller spring from...its not in the parts cat. now but I got the # somewhere . so it apperars that there are 2 springs and 2 rachet arms. The smaller of the springs is a round wire spring. the larger of the 2 has a bit of a flat surface on 2 sides and is rounded on the other 2. The space under the button head as I call it , where the long arm of the spring rests varies a little also. The 15mm rachet 2.4mm of clearance whereas the 16.25mm rachet has 2.15mm of clearance. Now .2mm isn't much but it is there. I don't recall all the details of everyone springs failure but I had the larger spring on the larger rachet boss and made it 24-25000 miles. At 31000m my replacement spring still looks good so I don't know what to do right now. I took pics so I will email to Jaap and maybe he can post them. Actually this solves nothing later andy

I guess I need to start a new poll. 1 - How many people don't have the MRA windscreen on a V11 LeMans? 2 - How many people want one? I don't have any in stock at the moment. I would be happy to get more but I really need to have 3 or 4 people interested. I'm not as good as AL at creating a poll, so just email me....thanks andy

I have 31,000m on my 02 LeMans. Docc might be able to say that there has not been a lack of performance in my bike If I get the time to build this motor I will be sure and post the findings on my valves. Right now I need tires more than a valve job( i hope ) later andy

I used the blue Hylomar on the first tranny recall I did in Jan 04. We kept the bike for a month or so for the person. In the last part of that 30 days, the gearbox was leaking, so I pulled his gearbox out again and used Ducati bond. No more leaking gearbox. I would recomend Ducati bond, Yamabond, etc....not the blue stuff.....and be sure and let it set up a day before you add fluid ....and remember the ol saying ...a little dab will do ya later andy

3 hex head bolts, I think 4mm, hold the master cylinder in place. Nothing to exciting once it is removed, just don't squeeze the clutch lever. It will be an exercise in contoursionism to get the damn thing out. good luck andy

Hit me off list with your vin # and I will see if it was a rod recall bike. cheers anyway andy

So Docc, Have you been snooping around my lift when I'm not there? I have some measurments for ya but you've gone detective on me. The pins will go in farther than the bearing is wide. Once someone sees how all of this is put together, it makes you wonder how the rear end of the bike stays together. Pretty amazing that Guido came up with this Seems like it would flex and bend ...just flat out not work...Oh well Cheers andy

I have replaced my broken spring now. There my be some truth to the OE spring ID being to small or the Boss that it goes on being to big.I don't have any hard truths here, just observations. The boss for my spring was 16mm, still is.no filling done. The ID of the coil on the spring that broke was 17-18mm. The ID of the replacement spring (MG) is 20-21mm. The wire diameter of the broken spring was 1.99mm.The replacement spring wire dia.is 2.15.(MG) I had to file the other end down so that it would ride on the rachet arm pivot correctly. The shaft that holds the other end had a small groove worn in it by the bent tab of the spring (the part that breaks) I took the trusty dremel tool and smoothed all of that so that there wasn't a groove anymore. The new spring hooks a couple of mm away from where the old one was. Being as how mine lasted for 26,000miles , that may be why I had a groove worn on the shift shaft.I don't know if this groove was present on any of the low mileage bikes that have been talked about. as to a road side repair, well, I don't know about that. Yes, anything is possible, but I was in the shop and it was a major pain in the ass to get the bottom 3 allen bolts out. And depending on what year bike it is and the type of glue Guido used ,the side cover may or may not come off easy. I think I would be more incilned to just cary a spare spring. If one did break, find the nearest accomodating motorcycle shop and tell them you have the part and the directions for replacement and see if you could help out. I spent about 2 hours on mine but I was taking pictures and measuring things. You could probably do it in about an hour. I'll try to send pic to Jaap since I'm not having much luck uploading. back on the road cheers andy

I guess I'm going to throw all the stats out the window. Just when I was thinking my LeMans was safe with 26,000 miles , the spring broke!. down shifting for a stop sign . Well, at least I think it broke. It will be a week to find out.Gear shift lever does nothing.Let ya'll know when I get it torn apart. Cheers andy

Carillo Rods - Worth the expense??
andy york replied to al_roethlisberger's topic in Technical Topics
agreed with all of the above. If you want faster spool up, take the boat anchor, known as a flywheel on a Guzzi and have a pound or two taken off the outside . I think something was wrong with your old FJ. I still have mine but shes rather burley now after the hormone treatments! cheers andy -
1-Take the mirrors off ..2-hex head in front of turn signal left and right...3- top hex bolt on air scoop left and right ( maybe the bottom one. ) you can look and see which one goes in a rubber wellnut...4- hex bolt left and right at the back of fairing just in front of your knees sitting on the bike. with everything undone, from the front of the bike, act like your going to hug your MG and grab the left and right side of the fairing somewhere by the tank and spread it just a little and walk straight back. be very careful with the little tangs that hold the wire clip for the lamp.the whole thing is plastic except for the lens. reasemble in reverse order! cheers andy

I would not worry about the heat as far as the glass is cocerned, its the small PLASTIC reflector that Guido so kindly put in the LeMans. Its a shame they could not have used a regular V11 Headlamp .Oh well, I'll continue my search for a real headlamp for my LeMans,Maybe even one of those fancy arc light thingeys!! Cheers andy

I have about 3000m on the set of derlin bushings I made for my 02 Le Mans. They are holding up quite well thank you. Be sure to put a insert in the center for the bolt to go through. If anyone needs a really technical write up I will spend the time to do that, ...I 'm a really slow typer. I can't imagine the torque arm bending. I could push my old bushings out by hand. Surely a piss poor design by Guidio's cousins nephews uncle. cheers andy

I just put a set of Traxxion Dynamic springs in my 02 LeMans. I'm about 225+bike weight.I think I got 1.1 or 1.2 springs .You will like the difference it makes! The down side is you will want to change the rear shock as well andy
-
As stated before, the lever on the left handlebar is a fast idle, just to warm up the engine. The computer should read all the info from the sensors and richen the bike on its own.Thats how its pose to work. My LeMans has 25000m on it and starts first time with about 3/8 to 1/2 throttle and less than 5 sec crank time. If its could outside then I would apply a little fast idle to warm her up.(shame it won't work on my wife-))) andy

oops! yes I will be going to a heavier rear spring andy

As I replied, you need a spacer to set spring preload. If you pull each of your fork legs apart, one of the first things to come out will be a spacer of some length. It may be pvc or some other material. Chances are if you go to a stiffer staight rate spring,it will be shorter, hence the need to make a longer spacer. there is no magic to spring preload...whatever works for you. Preload:you are putting a small amount of load on the springs before you add the weight of bike and rider. it really is easy . The hard part,as well as time consuming is dialing in and making changes to get it just right andy
-
I just put a set of Traxxion springs in my 02 LeMans. I went with the 1.10 springs. Since I am about 225 on a good day plus gear, plus bike weight, I went with heavy springs.I made my preload spacers 135mm and used 7.5 wieght synthetic fork oil. All of this is a good thing except now I feel the short comings in the rear shock.Need a Penske or Ohlins on the back. Front preload is a matter of taste. I started with 20mm of sag and 145mm spacers. This was a bit much so I trimmed the spacers down 10mm to 135mm. Now I have about 25mm of sag. Compresion and rebound work good now.I think I remember about 16 rounds of adjustment on each fork leg.compression set at 7 ,rebound set at 10 (from full soft.) Unless your seals are leaking leavem alone andy

Checking to see if anyone is head to Birmingham the 14 & 15 for the ama superbike series? There will be some folks leaving Nashville next Thursday and Friday. Guzzi is supposed to have a setup at the track as well as Ducati corner for the multi Italian bike owners andy

I would say that the biggest problem with an independant doing the work is his lack of Luigi's brothers special tools. Anyone can disassemble the parts from the casing. 2 of the flexible sleeves are easily replaced....the spacer and cush unit reqiure the special tool and I personally would hate to try the job with out it good luck andy
