..and stop feeding fuses to the short. To better your chances for finding the short solder a 12V rear light bulb to an old fuse (or similar) und plug this in. (was one of the better ideas I could pick up here )

These pics, and Scud's Greeny ones, time to put up some of my bike's I think. We didn't have a 'Rat' section so far, did we?

If it (Chuck's post) were oil filled aluminium can type coils as usually used with points then they didn't overheat. I had two of them fail because of broken secondary wires.- 65 replies

Once the TPS has developed a worn spot the whole EFI system is irreversibly out of tune. The TPS has to be replaced. There's no way to revive or repair it. The V11 uses a TPS manufactured by CTS to fulfil lawn mower specifications for instance. After 50.000 km you better look for a replacement, they don't last longer. This also implies that you cannot check a TPS for proper functioning without having proper measurement equipment at hand.

That's the Internet. You'll never know what he's done before. Wrong coils can get damaged, why not. Maybe the 'new' one just was more 'another' one, already damaged from other experiments or just an obscure shop find.- 65 replies

Yes, he should look on the secondary side. As written above, a grinded HT cable for instance, making contact to the engine, can cause a continuos and destructive current through the coil. The positive side is continuously on and the two inductors are connected on one side. Perfect path. I forgot to include the previously mentioned coil schematics, sorry for that. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/ignition/pics/circ_ic.gif- 65 replies

01' Guzzi V11 Ignition Coils Melting (Earthing Issues?)

As a nice side effect I found this interesting site: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/ignition/ig104.htmIt's talking about MGs, reversed polarities and more. Check it out, it offers a nice read. I stepped over it because of the schematics, which very much better resemble the internals of the V11 coils. Just replace contact and condenser with ECU. As the 2 coils share a common ground also a shortage on the HT side could theoretically cause a continuos current and overheating of the unit. See post 2 Anyway, I still can't imagine how the engine would run at all with a shortage on this side, the more as this thread is fused with 15A. @gstallons: what do you mean with "an open in the secondary"? Isn't it meant to be open at the spark gap?- 65 replies

luhbo replied to jcitycash's topic in Technical Topics
The ECU is grounded internaly via the harness, the cable going to the housing is for the EMC shield only. A bad ground, a fault in the harness, probably can have funky funny effects, maybe destroy it even. Switching the coils for instance is no trivial task, I suppose the chips have to handle several hundred volts and rely on a reliable path for this. Again, I'm no hardware engineer, but bad ground usually is bad for such stuff.- 65 replies

Hm, the internet makes me always think as if all were still in their early twenties. Three decades professionalism on bikes is quite a word, surely worth to be heard.
-
I do sealing on a professional basis. The first what fails is mostly the sealing. Next comes hidden corrosion behind it. Please don't take this personal now, but if you cannot sleep because you're afraid of water sipping into the cylinders along the flap shafts you probably have not many other sorrows. Can you imagine how much water your bike is pumping during the first five minutes in the morning, how much of it is going down the sump and then condenses on the bare metal parts like rods and cams? BTW, the TPS is O-ring sealed. Ever looked at one?

01' Guzzi V11 Ignition Coils Melting (Earthing Issues?)
luhbo replied to jcitycash's topic in Technical Topics
Such may exist, why not. I'm no expert, so I'm a bit guessing, sure. The MyEcu does the job based on an 8bit Atmel chip driving 2 MosFETs for 2 coils and 2 smaller ones for the injectors. That's it. The rest is IO, pressure sensor and voltage stabiliser. It works perfectly and totally satisfying. The 15M Marelli unit, the one we're talking of, is basically the same, although some more custom chips can be found on it. It could well be that some of them do complicated things, but as long as obviously all necessary functions can be realised by obviously clever software I see not much reason why they should invest in tricky hardware. It's a cheapo for leisure articles like bikes and scooters, it's not an automotive product. And it was developed 20 years ago.- 65 replies

Yes, that's what I wanted to say. The bracket of course, but also the plate. On a 99 Greeny (of course again), from the series with exhaust stars and shiny black mirrors.
-
Yep, they did. The early V11 ('99) at least partially had this bracket. I know of one bike.

01' Guzzi V11 Ignition Coils Melting (Earthing Issues?)
luhbo replied to jcitycash's topic in Technical Topics
As far as I know they have skipped the resistors also inside the ECU. You don't want to have one there anyway. To save the coil from frying the on-time is restricted by the software (the MyEcu offers this parameter for fiddling even). I don't think you can make anything wrong on the secondary side besides setting the resistance to big. Because the bike was running with the new coil for a certain time they might have installed wrong coils before, may have tuned the software for more spectacular performance, or just want to entertain this forum. You never know. I'm curious what will come up as solution.- 65 replies

Consider that all what gets in easily equally easily comes out again. As the shaft is sealed as well as the TPS, anything else just will complicate things. Especially in your case: I see you have Eastern Sierra in your avatar. To me that doesn't sound like salty winter conditions, unless we wanna start a remake of the Global Warming thread, of course.

01' Guzzi V11 Ignition Coils Melting (Earthing Issues?)
luhbo replied to jcitycash's topic in Technical Topics
No earthing or ground issue here. The problem seems to be overheating of the coil. No ground, no current, no heat. I'm somewhat tempted to say he should drill a hole in the back of the coils to let the surplus voltage out, to get some additional internal cooling and, probably best of all, to establish a manhole for regular spray maintenance. They're not cheap, they're sensible and they're not supposed to be opened and sprayed with anything. There's so much bullshit spread via forums, this TPS cleaning myth is a typical one. BTW, do not fill anything with anywhat. That's not sealing, that's humbug.

Guzzi is Junk lol. Now tell me about loopers? :)
luhbo replied to JesterGrin_1's topic in Older models
Don't know anything about 'Loopers', never owned one, just several Tontis, but if I had the option I'd surely love to try one. If they can do the same sort of magic as my 50ies 250 TWN can do with 10HP then they're worth the money. What they look like is quite promissing. Try it out before you buy, I heard the Nuovo Falcones aren't that magically gifted for instance. -

Does anyone remember this silver V11 with a similar tank, but polished, and small also chromey aftermarket pipes? It was sold for 2000 USD IIRC. Right colour and I would have called it the prettiest V11 I've seen so far May well be that Docc still has pics of her hanging in his shed.
