  1. Asking a bike forum for finance advice is...touchy. I'd have to say I wouldn't take a loan against your retirment for a toy, but it's all you in the the end. I'd stick with the dual sport beater plan myself. That way, if something happens again (let's hope not) you won't be upside down on yet another toy.

  2. If you end up on a big dual sport like the KLR, you'll probably find (like I did) that the floaty suspension, short gearing, torquey single and the ability to both ride over curbs and look cool with a milk crate strapped on all sort of counter the lack of power. The brakes are pretty weak, if I had one big complaint. Other than that I think everyone should have one. Plus, if it falls over on the trail (or gets knocked over by an idiot backing up at the market like mine) you'll likely not even notice. Just look for a decent used one-they go for dirt cheap all the time and you want the "used" look on a ride like that anyway.

  3. Hahaha even if you did have the cash money in your hands right this minute....which one would you buy! :D

I DONT KNOW, I can get a 08 zero miles Tuono in the color I want for $8500 in TX but they would have to ship it to me and I can get an 08 brand new super duke with zero miles for $8999 22 miles away so they are almost exactly the same price I DONT KNOW!!!!

If it's down to the two, I'd take the super duke, just to try something different. :2c:

thats how I feel as well and its local I think I'll go down and give them a shot and if not I can make a decent down payment when I get my taxes if I have to, they made it sound like they have more than one hold over from 2008 which is crazy to me for such a sweet bike. Great reviews comfy but would need that gel seat or one with a different profile it pushes me forward like the stock guzzi seat used to till I got me a maund seat. The aprilia does have an amazing seating position for me so I can't deny that plus I have 2 oil filters and a handful of tricky bits but I can easily sell them if I got a duke.

That, and the Tuono looks like it's just missing bodywork post-crash rather than looking the part of a legit streetfighter. Which it is, I suppose, but still I like the look of the Dukes better.

  5. HI Ben

I'll echo everyone else's sentiments- glad you are ok. Don't sweat the bike too much- it's just a possession, a piece of machinery. You'll get another soon enough.

Have you considered a dual sport like a DR650 or KLR650? They are great bikes for tall folks, but probably too slow for you.

Or buy another V11. They are way undervalued right now.

Or a Loopframe. You said you liked to tinker, right? I love my Eldo. It's no sportbike, but I never have an urge to drive it like one.

Edit: What about a BMW F800 GS or S?

All good feedback I need something thats a good all arounder that I'll mostly just ride to work, around town and occasional rides over 100mi and finally one ride of about 400-800mi once a year. I'm only going to have one bike so an all out touring bike would be too much a dedicated sport bike might not be enough although the RSVR was pretty damn solid I won't lie to ya. When I think about it I really did like that speed rush getting onto the freeway and knowing that if I had to I could get away from any situation with a little extra wrist(except when I need to back up this time) If I got another V11 it would be a lemans but the breva fits me better and was more comfy when I sat upon it.

I love my DR650; just took it on a 2000 mile on/off road trip in fact, and it did well. I finally figured out what all those Quota, GS and other D/S riders are talking about now-they're not as weird as I thought and the riding position is great for the long haul. Incidentally, I just happened to stop by Sonny Angel's in San Diego, and he actually has a never registered, 3 (three) mile V11 Lemans in red and gray there just waiting for someone to love her...

  6. Pete from Reboot sent me pics of these luggaqge racks but wasn't sure what brand they were,H & B or Tecknic ,anyone know? Anyone what max weight both are spec'ed at,

    Thanks,

    michael

They look exactly like the mounts for my Teknics from the pictures. As far as weight goes, I haven't weighed the bags but have had them full many times with no problem (clothes, wine, groceries, etc.). The top rack on the other hand broke on me with around 15-20 lbs in it. Not the whole thing, just one of the support brackets. It just doesn't have a lot of angle to support weight where it mounts to the subframe.

  7. Hi all,

recently I bought a Sport1100 which needs a bit of work here and there. The driveshaft UJs feel rather sloppy and I suspect too much wear on the pinion shaft bearing or bush (how much is tolerable there?)

I noticed that Guzzi only sell more or less complete driveshafts but surely those UJs are nothing special and could be replaced with sealed-for-life items?

Does any one know the dimensions of the UJs?

    Tom

I've thought about this a few times as well, and just haven't followed through on getting it over to a driveshaft specialist to take a look. Not sure if it's feesable or not, but I'm guessing someone here has looked into it further.

  8. In the 30k miles that I have on my LeMans it has sort of stranded me once, when the shifter pawl spring broke. I had a voltage regulator quit on me once too but I was able to ride home. Other than that my particular bike has been pretty good. I changed all the relays out when I bought it as recommended here and haven't had any of the relay problems that some have had with the stock relays.

Would I recommend it to someone looking for "a bike that I can totally count on and not breaking down"? Nope. That's what Hondas are for. It seems like your ST4 will do everything that you'd want to do with a LeMans and then some. I don't know if a LeMans would be any more or less reliable than the Duc but Ducati dealers are a lot more plentiful than Guzzi dealers which would be a concern for me if I was long distance touring.

That said, they are fun bikes and if you want one to replace the beemer go for it! There are some great deals on used V11s out there now.

    What he said.

  9. Seems to me it's like most other things...if you've got your sh*t together, and are following the laws as they apply to your state, then you have nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, they might get a few of the idiots that are causing all the bad publicity off the streets. Any type of profiling is usually (not always, mind you) the result of some generalized opinion based at least in part by truths. Being asked to verify your status of compliance here in the US usually comes with a "thanks for your cooperation and have a nice day" at the end. I don't know why we're so concerned here with offending any possible offenders. :2c:

That said, more than likely it's just another way to line the pockets of the states a little better. We wouldn't want the state governments to increase their efficiency too much... :glare:

  10. So what to do with the breather hose

Well, I ran mine using ~5/8 id hose out to the back above the passenger foot peg/below the seat, using a k&n auto-style crankcase breather at the end, making sure to leave enough length so that it can go up under the tank a bit before bending down towards the back to keep oil from seeping out. I'll try to post a pic tonight.

  11. Hello,

I have installed on my v11 a termignoni full exhaust and open K&N filter. After that the bike started to give backfires between 2500-3000 rpm indicating too lean mix on low rev. So I have fully close the air screw, adjust on my dealer the co and enrich the mix on the ECU.

I have took the bike for a short ride on a hot day and after the engine was hot enough the backfires started again at 1500-1800 making almost impossible the ride in a city.

I modifiyed the tps at 160 mv fully closed but still no improvment so I've decided to buy a power commander.

The problem is that I have tried all maps available and under hard acceleration it has shorts and importants losses of power (I was about to fall when accelerating in a curve). I'll reset the ECU on factory settings and start again but I think that the right map is important,

so if someone has or knows about a map for termi/open k&n please let me know.

    Thanks

I have the same issues on mine...look up world class valve specs, and verify the 525mv at idle on the tps...it helped mine considerably. I'm in the process of making some intake runners in an attempt to lengthen the intake length closer to stock while keeping the K&N's. Also, read up on the ETS holder threads...I think there's something to be said for the plastic holder if you're running the brass one.

Following all this, I'm going to have a map made up at a local dyno shop with Guzzi experience. Let us know what you come up with.

  12. I also have the Pirelli Diablo Stradas...plenty of grip and good life (~5-6k for the back, a little more on the fronts). That said, I've never had anything else on there, so I can't say if there's anything better. They've never done anything unpredictable or scary, so I'll stick with them I think.

  13. I also have talked with North Hollywood Speedo about either refurbishing the stock set-up, or more likely, replacing the guts with more reliable internals. He (the gentleman on the phone) said he wasn't sure what could be done but that he was willing to try. I have almost pulled the trigger on a motogadget setup at least three times, but have stayed hopeful that I can get the Veglias to operate correctly. Maybe I should just give up the chase on getting these things to work correctly. :huh2:

  14. When the Japanese bike makers were trying so hard to emulate the Harleys, they were doing it with water-cooled twins that emulated the look of air-cooled motors. They ran better, made more power and were far more reliable. And really, really boring. I've always disliked Hondas only because they're too good. It sounds rediculous but it's the truth. Moving to oil-cooling (like the newer BMW's) would split the difference pretty well, wouldn't it? They could get better tolerances, more power, and better cooling and still keep most of the good looks and mechanical clatter...

  15. I'm really considering this trade as a good thing, ALWAYS loved the old eldo's the only thing I worry is the brakes but I'll be going slow anyway which I'm totally fine with, I want a bike I don't need to be in a hurry on. Might have to look into brake updates but maybe not if it works fine I don't blame to vroom screech the thing.

Drum brakes in good shape aren't that scary. They're just fine for the most part. Plus, they look waaay cooler and correct on the vintage bikes. Really, I'd consider going through them (new springs, clips and all-not just fresh shoes) and keeping them.

  16. I see that df2 had one for sale in February but no way to contact him. Meanwhile, the search is on. I'm looking for one and the first choice would obviously be green.

GP Cycles in San Diego has (or had very recently) a green one- I test rode it. Sweet little bike. Not sure about the fairing fitment, though. Seems like it would-there's nothing strange about the headlight setup that I noticed. I'm looking at one of the ones that JC Whitney sells for the BMW R90/6 I'm thinking about getting...maybe that'd be an optiion as well?

  17. I also have the FBF's, and love them. They've been on the bike since new, and have held up well. Even the carbon fiber has held up with occasional cleaning to keep off the fade. And of course, they sound great. Still kinda want a quat-d box, though...

  18. Congrats on finding such a pristine V11...that color combo is nearly my favorite (next to the Tenni, of course). Seems like, if nothing else, you have the perfect mentality for Guzzi ownership. Just ride the damn thing, and fix what pops up as required. Like any other forum, the problems with these things are focused on and discussed here, which makes them seem more fragile and problematic than they really are. After you get the basic bugs worked out, you find out these things are more or less bullet-proof.

  19. I solved the problem by bringing this home,

I still need to get a seat re-build AND a backrest.. any of you have one of those Jardine AM rests for sale?

I fit one on my Cali Aluminum that came from a Yamaha cruiser off Ebay. I just asked the different sellers to give me the measurments until I found one close enough to work. Maybe you could find something similar? Think it set me back $50 or so...

    Nice bike you got!
