  1. Hi Chartermarque, Congrats on your purchase. I have a RM number 201 as per sidecover and a piece of paper from the factory, although I'm not getting too excited about people wanting to break down my door to get hold of it as a collectors item. I have seen another one here in Oz so they are out and about. I'm pretty happy with it all glitches aside, but I have been a Guzzi rider for a good part of biking life, guess there is sometin about them that grows on you, bit like a fungus. No not the fastest steed around but the way the boys in blue have been throwing bits of paper at me it appears its fast enough for them. Oh boy the 9 Point Paranoia Blues. Enjoy the RM
  2. Yeah Kevin, very equatorial, centre of the world us Aussies, not according to the Poms (Brits) though, who prefer us to be in the antipodes upside down and standing on our heads. Well, if that geography lesson relates to aussie riding ability it certainly shows in the multitude of talent we have on the Moto GP and Supers circuit including your AMA rounds. Back to geography, for a souwester like yourself winter here can be dry and mild and very pleasant, like your dry Mediterranean climate, however come November and a very humid airstream settles in for most of summer on the coast similar to FLA and makes for some very sticky rides with a constant threat of getting very wet from short sharp thunderstorms, not to mention the hail, wind and lightning to boot. The bike is nicely sorted now, just in time to get booked, again, this time puting my licence into serious jeopody. With regard to the Rosso Mandello's red tappet covers, they had been painted before I bought it due to the original candy apple red fading on the alloy covers. I want to bring them back to original with powder coated ones if possible. I'd also like to have the wheel rims painted on the edge too, in the same colour, eventually. Cheers Morris
  3. Hey Greg. I'd be most interested in the replacement clutch for a Rosso Mandello, that is if you would ship to Aus. Could you post an update on this option, please. Thanks Morris
  4. Watch out for the mozzies, mosquitoes, mygs or whatever you call them, they are horrendous. A blood imprint the shape of your hand on your arm within seconds of full skin exposure to the blood sucking parasites. Not even places in africa or asia can compare to these hungry little sukkers, especially arctic circle north in norway and finland. Unless of course they have DDT'd them since I was there.
  5. Thanks guys to all who posted a suggestion. We have a winner, me. With great thanks to the dedicated tuning genius of one Gilmeister, commonly known as Scura or Mark gilmore of this site. Mark over a period of about 4 days methodically worked through the TB settings that have been posted on this site and with the help of a dial balancer has tuned out completely the hiccup that was there at low revs. The bike still takes a couple of cranks from cold to start, but immediately settles into perfect idle, and from warm is just one stab on the button, no throttle and purrs into life, just like a beemer. Oh it still runs fine at full revs. The other problem of fuel pump intermitently cutting out seems to be tracked to a poor connection on the fuel pump relay, removed cleaned and replaced not a squeek from it since, starts up every time. Who's a happy chappy then.
  6. Yeah thanks Kevin I lived in Oak Creek Canyon for nine months, sadly without a bike, but rather with the great red shark Chevy Impala. That was in '81, so guess things would have jammed up since then. Pity it would be a horn of a bike road. I will work through the options since reading these posts. Defintely trying a full set of GEI relays, valve clearance and TB tuning

    Tires

I use Pilot Power 2CT. They are fantastic tyres, totally confidence inspiring. But they are SSport tyres - I don't get much more than 1,500m to a set - wear is fast but v even. Power Road are a new Sport/Touring version of the 2CT? The Pilot Road 2 are the new dual compound road tyre, but they also sport a very small 2CT icon on the rim. I have used the Pilot Power on the front many times but like you said wears too quickly. These Pilot Road 2's are holding shape with no sign of centre wearing flat, yet.
  8. Thanks guys, Sidestand switch had been bypassed for part of the trip and made no difference. Valve clearance was reset prior to heading off on trip with a slightly open setting, not too tight, but certainly worth a check again of course. You don't feel that it has anything to do with fuel injection, do you? Does the starter motor and fuel pump run off the same relay? BTW Kevin do you live anywhere near Sedona, as I spent quite some time there and know the area albeit a few years ago.

    Tires

I have been using Michelin for the past 3 changes, but the best I have found are the ; new Michelin Road 2 2CT front and back. These dual compound tyres have turned the handling on my RM into a superb road holder. Absolutely confidence inspiring in all corners grips like the proverbial to a blanket, holds a perfect line, no deviation, no tracking. Able to wear off the "chicken strips" at last. Put them on just before heading off to Phillip Island for the Moto GP, 4100km through fantastic Alpine roads, very tight twisties for 100km at a stretch, dirt roads and over 100mph sweepers through the mountains and back roads. These tyres lapped it up. Wear factor, some light roughness on edges, hardly marked in the centres, like new. Measured wear against a new one on my return. I lost 1.3mm of centre tread in the 4000kms, which would probably equate to about 12,000km overall if wear factor stays the same. I can't recommend them highly enough
  10. After reading the previous thread on the "nasty hiccup" I am wondering if my problem is the same or a new variation. My 01 Rosso Mandello has developed 2 ailments of late which appear related but occur at different times. 1) Periodic lack of fuel pump connection at ignition start up. Can be any time, first in morning, or after refuelling on a ride. A few twiddles with fuses, relays and ignition switch and sidestand swittch generally gets it going again. Relays are now being replaced. I have read the thread on the GEI relays and will order a set. 2) Secondly, a hiccup at lower engine revs, ie. up to 3000rpm, whilst riding or stopped at lights a strong hiccup which sometimes stops the motor or nearly does so. It starts only after the engine is warm to hot and about 3 sec intervals until the engine gets hotter then the interval gets very much shorter. Full engine revs at highway speed over 110kph no problem, the bike pulls and and accelerates as strong as ever, only at reduced engine reves does the problem seem to occur. I have just recently returned from a 4100km ride to Phillip Island for the GP and the 2 problems plagued me all the way, the hiccup seems to be getting worse. I have tried; changing coils; replacing ECU; replacing relays: checking for air leaks around TBs ie. removing checking rubber for cracks and smeering a very light silcone smear around rubbers; rechecked TB sensor position on RHS and set them at 150 and 520 respectively, disconnected sidestand connection. All above to no avail, can anyone offer any further suggestions
  11. Thanks guys I think I'll just have to experiment. I'm off to Phillip Island next week and was hoping to beat the blast so to speak. I'll let you know how I got on. 22 bikes and a mad blast throught the Snowy Mountains and along the Great Ocean Road, 2 major icons for Aussie riding and to top it off with watching the Champ puting it to all the other contenders, bring it on.
  12. I don't quite catch what you mean by "angling back"
  13. I have an 01 rosso mandello and recently purchased a new Arai helmet. Nice snug fit and pretty comfortable apart form the wind noise. I have checked the air blast whilst riding and find the wind deflected from the windscreen funnels the air directly up under the lip of the helmet causing pretty anoying wind turbulence noise. Is there any way of adjusting the screen up a few degrees to push the air blast a bit higher, either over the top of the helmet or at least into the face rather than under the lip?
  14. Most Aussies I've talked to don't put Vale down but rather respect him for all his attributes, superb brave riding, never say die attitude, his fun antics on and off the track, his respect for his young contemporaries and I must say his sticking it at the tax authotities (a real aussie hero) we're just disappointed he hasn't been around in a hard cut and thrust match between him and casey all season just so the racing doesn't become boring. I'm sure casey would have preferred to have won the title rather than having been given it by removing Valentino from the equation. Casey's been putting in the hard yards too for many years with a dogged determination to be the best in his field, this year the timing was right. Surely Michelin could have tried a bit harder to have made the adjustments they needed to overcome their advantage they had when the "fly in" rule was available. Ducati also are a very tight team and being small do not have the unwieldy decision making network that must plague the bigger makes. And OMG wot this I hear of a prospective Ducati/HD merger. truth or rumouur
  15. Jaap I wish you'd keep this bird molester off this forum, never happy unless sticking it up guzzi's. Next thing you will know he'll be starting a post about Global Warming. Back to the future. My Rosso Mandello bought in Oct 05 with 20,000 km on clock. Had crinkle engine paint replaced as was spring. I now have 40,000km on clock, still original battery, speedo/tacho cables etc. just recently replaced steering head bearings, balance TB's and heat sensor. Apart from that running like a top. Bit concerned about the handling tho, tried all sorts, but guess it must be the rider. I'm sure the bird molester will have an opinion on this.
  16. Cliff, Mark has the open Remus pipes and now he's made his own x-over, where.as mine is all standard. Would I need to make it more free breathing to get the best effect with your ECU or would it improve the standard setup? BTW, Iwouldn't go suggesting to the avian molester to improve his TL1000 output just yet as he is still getting the hang of the power from the 660 Muz. Might put him over a cliff, so to speak. Oh did I mention oil leaks.
  17. Hey wouldn't be great if Michelin pull out their proverbials and get a competitive tyre sorted in the next 3 weeks or so. I couldn't imagine Vale giving up at this stage and it would put the fight back to Casey. I know he'd like to win the championship by merit and not by default, so comeon Michelin get your act together, because we'd like to see a battle royal at Phillip Island this year.
  18. I don't know why Jaap continues to allow this "bird Molester" on this site, especially as he appears to be so critical of all things guzzi. Maybe he should go out and indulge in some purist motorcycling pleasures and actually take pleasure in molesting a "real flying eagle" for change and he might truly understand what we all stand for. You're right Cliff it was Gilmore's bike I was referring to,sorry I misnamed your engine management system. An honest mistake, something that a suzuki engined plastic fantastic rider wouldn't really understand. Instead he must sling mud at us slightly graying demented enthusiasts.
  19. I have a 2001 Rosso Mandello with 40,000km's on clock and was returning about 190/200km before fuel light came on with about 5litres in reserve. On advice from Pete Roper I had the engine heat sensor removed and replaced with the heat transmitting grease and immediately improved consumption to about 30 km's extra per tank, its not that much but that sensor really does have an effect. May look a a PC later as a friends has a Scura with one and his consumption and power delivery is far better than mine.
  20. It was great to see the 2 Aussie flags flying on the podium, well picked Forrest. Have to wonder whether Hopper invited the karma that came his way from the practice incident with Checa. So what's with Vale, tyres or has the Yam lost its oomph, we know Laguna is not his favorite track but I did feel he'd perform better than that. Hot tracks and hot tyres certainly showed that Michelins can handle the pace, a la Sachsenring, so wots the go, any inside info Pierre?
  21. I'd have to back Foggster on that prediction. stoner for 07 title. After seeing his work these last few races and the real rip snorter at Catalunya, just showed his maturity in the face of pressure, he sure looks the package. Not that you could rite off Vale or even Dani for that matter. I'll be heading to Phillip Island in October to hopefully see Casey clinch the title
  22. Who knows? I might be completely, brain-dead wrong, (Although I think any manual will tell you otherwise, they even tell you how to test the thermistor the 'Old Way' with a kettle and a mercury thermometer ) but I'll wager a barn full of bloated Bulgarian bibliographers that while a playing up ETS might not be the only problem the fact that it's staring him in the face like an excited peadophile it is certainly worth addressing and can't be lumped in as 'Bullshit'. Gah! That sort of shit really hacks me off. I left the rally at 7.00AM this morning and just got back to Bungendore. 1178 Kms in 13.45. Not bad for an old git on a Griso with a wogged pipe! Pete Now Pete don't be too sensitive, I totally agree with Gilmore's remarks. The rally is to stretch our bikes legs and talk bullshit to our mates. Information as Mark says is better confined to these pages. However I was very grateful for your timely input about the heat sensor and your diagnostic on my bike albeit short of the TORK tool to do the adjustment. I happened to smell my exhaust pipe whem I got home and could detect a fairly strong wiff of fuel especially in the right pipe. This is obviously contributing to my lousy fuel consumption. Do you carry the plastic sensor cover that is likely to get broke on removal, so that I can have one ready when I redo my heat sensor, or should I try and source more locally. BTW I will be carrying out the TB adjustments as you prescribed once I can get my V Twins mate to set it up. Pete we did listen and the 3 of us you checked our bikes for were more than grateful for your input. Its a pity I couldn't talk to you more but someone else seemed to have the conversation monopolised. Sounds like you had a great trip back all credit to the Griso, eh. How is the best way to put an order in for a sloppage plate, through this site? Any way cheers The Nevilles appreciated it.
  23. Upgrading my predictions for Shanghai. Rossi blistering fast in qualifying. I reckon full race barring incidents (tyres/mechanics) we'll see 1st four including Rossi Stoner Vermuelen Caporex 1000 yuan can you match it forrest
  24. Yeah good eh, from an aussie point of view. I also predict that stoner will go well in china as well with the track having a 1.2km straight which will suit the top line speed of the Duc. Its not like rossi to have 2 corner overshoots in a race unless he had some problem as he obviously had. But would have made interesting racing if he and vermulen had seen race end intact. Chris was doing 1.52's in the later part of the race just get get some points back. How come Olie Jacques is still out there, he should have been pensioned off years ago, he's also been bit of a spoiler for other riders in previous races. Thats racing I guess.
  25. With Caporex back in form I predict a Ducati 1 & 2 with a Yamaha thrown in for good measure
