Ahh, the great escape
pasotibbs replied to belfastguzzi's topic in Special place for banter and conversation
Douglas Bader actually had two false legs. I read somewhere that people are still finding hidden escape kits in Colditz Castle! Isn't Colditz where they built a glider in the attic ? If I remember the story correctly when the POW's were liberated by the Allies (Americans ?) they begged them to let them try it out, to see if it would actually fly but were not allowed ? -
Speed cameras (UK only)
pasotibbs replied to John in Leeds's topic in Special place for banter and conversation
In the UK cameras are supposed to be sighted on roads that have had fatal accidents, but what happens is they seem to sight them anywhere on the road rather than near the scene. Near to where I live a pedestrian was killed on a crossing (the car ran the red) so we now have a speed camera van parked at the complete opposite end of the road (1 mile away) trying to catch cars speeding up hill (I assume because most people attack the hill slightly faster than the limit ?) rather than the straight gradual decent to the crossing/junction where the fatality occured. We also have speed bumps (or speed cushions as they prefer to call them )everywhere now (18 on the first mile of my way to work, its so bad the windscreen on my car has started to crack!!!)but all this means is that small cars have to slow down but big 4x4's and vans (the vehicles most likely to kill a pedestrian) can take them at 40+ without even backing off so now they overtake cars that have slowed down for the bumps- much safer than when everyone was doing 30-35 -

I've just changed the TDC setting to off recently to see what effect it had having noticed that the 1100 Sporti map that Raz posted was set up this way(I'm also using the injection and timing values),I need to let the battery discharge a little to be sure but it did seem better, but I suspect as the battery was fully charged it may not be the case. I've had the ECU approx 2yrs so I assume its reasonably up to date?

I've had kick back with mine from day one, if the battery isn't 100% I can't start the bike, but it starts fine with the old ECU ! I tried changing the Advance values etc with some success but I've not found a complete cure...yet I suspect it may be as much to do with the cold start enrichment as anything but finding the solution is proving difficult, I suspect the 500 and 1000 columns may need attention, I'm using the injection and timing values from the 1100 sporti map that Raz posted and so far starting does appear improved but we'll see.... This is the map currently on my bike. I just got a book on classic british bikes and cars (birthday present) and was by chance reading about the Panther last night, I didn't realise that production only stopped because they couldn't get a couple of the components anymore (I assume because the rest of the british bike industry and the supply companies had gone). Years ago I was told a story(by the riders grandson) about a Scott owner who used to take his dog with him on rides balanced on the tank, one day it started to rain and the bike lost power and died only to restart easily after the rider and passenger had got off. This happened several times more until the rider heard a hiss of air as the dog jumped off and realised that the dogs wet paw was sealing the air hole in the fuel cap !!

If its a Sachs rear shock then check for corrosion and cracking of the lower "eye"(as you wouldn't want it to fail mid trip )the seals can fail but there isn't really any way to check this so if you have any doubts fit a Hagon monoshock (approx £250)and forget about it. You could fit some heavier bar end weights to reduce the vibes but the only part I can think to carry is a spare "cam sensor" as this would not be possible to work around if it failed. There is no reason I can think of that would make a well maintained V11 a bad choice for this trip ! I'm sure others will add their thoughts. Have a good trip Dave

No more like this

The Ducati owners club had 2 or 3 years at a Pub near Masham that was ok (in Fearby if I remember correctly) I'm told that the Brewery tour is good (http://www.blacksheepbrewery.com/beers/cask.cfm)
-
Could be worse, a work mate was born in Rotherham but moved to London when he was 16 so now having returned to Yorkshire (Barnsley)sounds like he's an extra from Eastenders !!!
-
I think its a rounded off "Posidrive" ?
-
Not sure if your bike is the same as mine but watch the spacer as it can go either side but is only correct if fitted on the LHS(the previous owner/mechanic may have got it wrong !!!).

If your stuck let me know, I should have an old one somewhere.

My 1996 MOTO GUZZI Sport 1100 LeMans story (long)

Superb, simply superb  -
Good answer, as a none pilot I'd still choose the WW2 plane but can see why the Eurofighter would appeal to you (the same way I imagine a racer would choose a GP bike over a Vincent, Brough etc ). The DB5 is a pig in a party frock(more like David Browns other products !!) and the Vantage (flawed as it is)is the best "old" Aston. So what makes us like Guzzi's ? Did T.E Lawrence decribe it best "A skittish motor-bike with a touch of blood in it is better than all the riding animals on earth, because of its logical extension of our faculties, and the hint, the provocation, to excess conferred by its honeyed untiring smoothness" ?

A poll would be interesting, I suspect most of us would choose the older more involved technology instead of the more modern "better" alternative. now a real test question.... Aston Martin DB5 or DB7
-
I can feel a poll coming on I suspect that most of us here would choose to fly in a Spitfire (or any WW2 fighter) to a flight in say a Eurofighter or even a ride on the footplate of the Flying Scotsman or Mallard rather than a Bullet Train ?
