!Update 10/15/11! Shifting still bad .Almost killed me !
mznyc replied to mznyc's topic in Technical Topics
I will respond to this, i also have had problems with false neutrals not just on my guzzi but my vfr as well and loads of other bikes i have had and i know where the problem lies. Its Me with the roads up here, bend after bend after bend up hill down hill more bends then short straights and twisties as well constantly going up and down the gearbox i sometimes get complacent/lazy with my gearchanges and fluff a few. But thats probably just me, was hankering after a mana (automatic bike) for a while, but will stick with what i have. Gary Ha Ha are you getting a hold of some single malt Oban Gary? That'd make me miss shifts This is definitely a mechanical problem,I very rarely miss shifts(like one every 10k miles, usually out of laziness/fatigue) on several bikes I currently own or any Ive owned in the past Cheers Michael -

Interesting observation, while fooling with the linkage. With the cover on,and manually operating the linkage I can move up a gear or down but not past second.Should I be able to?Do I need to be under power? When I had the cover off I was able to move the selector wheels by hand through all gears. When I went out a couple of days ago I was able to get through the gears with the false neutrals under power. Wonder if this could be a symptom of something other than the springs out of spec in the cover. The PO had changed the pawl arm 6,7 years ago with the 15mm pawl arm and updated spring, and i just changed all springs, so confident those are good. Thoughts,.... -

Hi Pete Thanks for the input.I have bled the clutch,no change. I would not dispute that the gearbox is durable(bulletproof),just way to high a ratio of owners have had some kind of poorly,non-functioning operating problem. In this thread alone 6 people are sayin they have a similar problem. My guess is that it's hundreds,if we did a poll and everyone responded . With the exploding Scura clutch problem pulling the engine may be inevitable.Just trying all external things before that as I dont have a proper garage/shop.Did you replace yours via Ram,or go with a twin plater? Thanks Michael -
Have you disconnected the PC3 and run her?The rule of thumb is the bike should run well before you add a PC3.If it runs well the PC is probably at fault.

I replaced all three springs in the cover last week and new Red Line fluid.(Old fluid was only 6 months old and only a few hundred miles). Took it out for a ride today, and FMe I'm still getting FN's So I'm down to three possibilities. 1) Just a bad box, find a good one and replace it 2)Tighter shift linkage. Not much play in there, but not a lot of room to adjust up or down without hitting pork chop in 1st or frame in 6th.Currently not hitting anything either way,but not an optimal position for me.Maybe cut down that threaded linkage to shorten play or go with adjustable rear-sets.Which Ive wanted for both sides but cost has prevented me. 3)The clutch is shot.No symptoms,no slipping, disengages when pulled in.With the cost of a replacement and time it would take(Id do it myself) and the fact that the bike only has 19k on it I'm hoping that's not it.The fact that it wasnt missing gears for the first few seasons I owned it prevents me from eliminating this possibility. I was able to get clean gear changes if I pulled the clutch in,waited and eight of a second, change gear, wait and eight of a second then let out clutch. I have several other bikes and zip up and down gears in spirited sport rides, rarely missing for many years. Thoughts? -
Got it back together. Took it down my gravel road and shifting action already feels a Lot lighter. Thunderstorms moving in so may not be able to give her a proper test for a few days..
-
Think I got what you said K,slid dogs till I got tranny in N. Pulled back so Ill have to call it a day. thanks
-
Yup my alignment punches indicate first and markers are neutral. Sorry for being stupid ,but could you explain how to align dogs,ASSuming those are the four shafts pointing out.Lotta confused there as what to do without screwing it up. Thanks Michael

OK Keith think I got the assembly back together correctly, will go up/down through gears by hand but wont budge in neutral once I mount her.Just using a couple bolts to hold her on.Feels snug but maybe have to use more for test?Neutral lined up with indent, dots on wheels line up in first.Transmission is still in gear. Should that plate that I'm pointing to have some play ?It does up and down and rotates clock-wise till it hits 6th gear position, assume that's correct See anything out of place? Thanks MZ

Thanks Keith

Finally getting around to replacing all springs in tranny cover but ran into a snag. I put cover on without sealant to check shifting and it shifted into gear(I think first) but then wouldn't budge. Figuring I put one of the springs back in incorrectly ,I want your opinions as to which on is wrong I think it's the one under the shifter shaft. Figure I'll put the cover back on in first gear and should align up,if not try second. Thanks Michael

Thanks Roy ,no problems but want to do that mod. Still using original Spark 500 battery!

Hi Shaun, I used a cutting wheel on one side to slice through the bearing housing, and tapped out the other side with a wood dowel from the inside.5 minutes tops.Mine went at 16k and many report having them go under 20k so would be worth doing while you got the wheel off.Another Guzzi "good enough" engineering achievement was that the spacer between the bearings was believed to be the incorrect size,Doh ! Mine still sits above my foot at max lowest position.I think previous owner replaced stock to lower pegs.
-
gstallons or some of our southern members may be able to confirm this,but,... Do you know what you'll never hear a Redneck say? Ducktape can't fix thaaat,....!
-
Does the brake pedal sit any lower than stock?Mine is way too high, but cant spring for the full adjustable replacements right now.
-
Enzo mine did the same thing.I think I was able to tighten them where the bolt goes through and that cured it for a year or so.Loosened up after a while and due for a re-tighten Annoying, yes!

Hi Frank I think that's a great deal! Most of your questions have been answered but if any of the LA/San Diego guys don't hook up with you I can give you some pointers next time I'm in LA,some of the best riding in the country!(was there last weekend) Michael

That sounds just a little snobby don't you think. Before the latte swilling set got into bikes it was a means of transport for the common man, a pudding helmet and what ever you have on and this is still the case for millions around the world, these are real motorcyclists not the crowd that have $1000 helmet,$2000 leathers and $30000 bike the take to a mechanic to pump up the tyres and then they only ride to the local cafe. So he only has a $100 helmet, he's made some effort. Oh and when you pull on your xyz brand heavy leathers , Armour etc and its really hot , remember more people die from heatstroke than bike accidents Nope not at all.Ive ridden 100's of K's miles, X-country,Europe,hundreds of touring trips, thousands of day rides,15 years of riding in Manhattan all year round,in 30+ years, started in my early teens, and the only thing that is important to me is that EVERYONE ,stranger or friend gets home in one piece.Doesn't matter what brand of bike or gear your ride or wear, lotta other good companies other than Vanson.I just pulled out my first street jacket a Fieldsheer tonight stashed in the back of the closet.Inexpensive, but very well made and saved my ass a couple of times. But it is commonly excepted to wear cheap gear as "good enough".I make a decent living now,but for most of my life I was a starving musician that lived week to week, but when I got back into street bikes,I scrimped, saved, worked extra hours, sold junk I didn't need to get quality gear,by doing a lot of research to get stuff on closeouts as I'd seen what happens to people who dont. And this was before the internet. Now you have the biggest store at your fingertips for new or used gear if you can't afford new. That cheap light weight crap that's sold on the web should be banned, but most people look at price as how to judge value. I wonder if the exhaust on his bike was stock?See at lot of that, upgrades that do little for performance ,but make a nice noise.Yet tires look like that.A friend of mine who's in his 40's did just that, spent a thousand bucks on a pipe yet went on a long trip with friends and guess what?, had a nearly bald tire blow out on him.He was fine but delayed him and his riding mates a day,I always teased him about his gear.Cheap jacket, jeans with chaps, ,and work boots. Finally he bought some better stuff, expect for armored boots.Soon after he crashed, walked away relatively unscathed except for his feet!By the way he thanked me for pestering him. If that's snobbery, call me a snob please. If wearing the best gear you can get, which we all can with a little ingenuity ,saves you, then the end justifies the means in my book Oh and in all those miles in riding in deserts and +100F temps in NYC I've never had heatstroke.Know what my limits are and make sure I don't push them.Take breaks, drink lots a water! Especially the kind with hops and barley at the end of the day -
Just found this dont know if you resolved it but figured I should respond, Welcome MH,assuming your from that beautiful part of the state? Love Singing Beach! We have a couple of Mass members that might be able to help you out if you need it.when you get into it, you should post in the technical topics section as this applies to that. Not a big deal pulling off cover.Just remember to disconnect the battery and DO NOT touch the leads to the ECU which are a mere few inches from the battery terminals.Remove starter,shifter,11? allen bolts to the cover in your in. Uhg-lee, Can't say I haven't see pics of similar condition tires from members on the site.Too many people see the purchase price of a bike, car boat, whatever but don't consider the real cost of ownership.Maintenance, insurance, fuel, quality gear,.. Overall Guzzi owners are older and wiserer than the standard squid racer boys but no excuse for that from anyone with half a wit.Let me guess,he wears and $100 helmet.Joe Rocket jacket, jeans and maybe sneakers on a good day.I tell newbies if it's too hot or inconvenient or you cant afford to wear fully armored gear, armored boots, gloves and a full face helmet then you shouldn't be riding. Gonna be 90 and humid tomorrow but I'll be wearing heavy ass full Vansons with heavy race armor.I value my bones and skin more than my comfort,oh and my tires will be in good condition, when they aren't I dont ride,... -
As recorded with my Iphone, http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=16161 I'm running stock X-over,no PC3,mainy because lack of funds.Couldn't get it to run smoothly with Race ECU but runs perfect with the stock one.
