I got this lot, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...em=220298528426 , once I receive it ,I'll post what I'd be willing to part with.

I would hope Guzzi will address and correct this problem with NO cost to owners.Unlike the EXPLODING Scura clutch, which they have NEVER admitted publicly. No way owners should have to pay one penny to fix ala replacing the shock.Potential lethal screwups are inexcusable.
-
Hmm let's see ,pay the feds last years taxes or Mandello? Sure is a fine example if it is what it is described as at a great price.Been keeping my eye out for one of those and a Nero Corso for awhile but bad timing finance wise, bummer

Bob are you talking about bump starting or jump starting?Iv'e read a few stories ,here, about people doing damage jump starting a bike. With a float charger it would be difficult damaging a good battery, even by ME!

Some of you may have seen this from Peter Morcombe at Reboot but if your not on the email list, take a look.Let's show how good a group of people we are,and not just a bunch of grouchy old cogers, overly concerned with our beloved machines!Points out what's important in life, Michael Please send a GET WELL card to this little boy, he is very ill with cancer and all he wants is cards.... Redneck back on a Guzzi

Maybe we'll have to all sign up to Stelvio.com to hang with Tex. -
More torque and power is a step in the right direction, but they gotta get rid of that friggin BREVA tank, airscoops and rear end,.....god awful ugly. And a megaphone exhaust?Pah-leese.Wheels and motor look good though. V11=Carla Gugino V12=Ugly Betty

Hi Raz, When doing these tests I assume PROBE polarity doesn't matter? What do you use for testing gauge thickness?I would assume that my puny Radio Shack alligator clips with thin gauge wire would fry if I used em on the starter.I like using clips on the ends of the probes to the part being tested so I can put the DMM on seat or tankbag so I can see it while doing tests alone and still having hands free to start bike, etc. Thanks,Michael PS My starter has been good since cleaning out solenoid, but waiting for other shoe to drop,......

This is where I would say "Uncle"!

Depends on what your looking for in the bike. How many days would you go out for,a couple,a couple of weeks? Is lower maintenance a requirement? Lightweight or heavy? How much do you want to spend? Iv'e owned an ST1100 for 7 years with 85K on it and it has never failed me,all conditions and weather.Low maintenance, shaft drive and great V-4 motor with a great vibe/growl.Comfortable in stock form, even for 2-up,and good fairing protection. Also the 1100's are cheap. You can get a clean one in the 4K-5K range. It was also in production for 12 years so lots of parts and accessories available. The new Concourse and FJR's look great but your looking at about 8K and up for a used one. If you want light weight ,and a little less comfort, the Triumph ST,Ducati, and VFR(Iv'e owned 3 of them, currently a VTEC in garage)would be good choices. I look at V11's as more of a roadster,a day trip bike, maybe a couple of days.Even with a Rich Maud seat and MPH risers it's great for 100-300 mile days, but multiple days might get tiresome for some people.I've been on dozens of 1500mi+ trips on the VFR and found it to be much more comfortable for slab/straight roads. Also an enclosed fairing to protect electrics from water(the Guzzi is like a cat,it can swim but it doesn't like it)and wind/water protection for the rider is prefered for long trips. My 3 cents,....

What's this about Sean?I missed this story.

Have you gotten a charger for the battery?10v is NG. Did you check all the reg/alt connections? The solenoid rides piggyback on the starter, remove with a torx bit and disassemble it,a couple of torx screws hold it together. There is a brass/copper plunger inside.Spray it with electrical cleaner and wipe it clean.Use dry lube on it and re-assemble. My local NAPA dealer says that they just connect it to a 12v battery to test starters.I'm sure a starter shop could do a more thorough test.Don't know about Guzzis but most starters don't just die, usually symptoms of slow starting ,then die.A few people here said they had slow starting symptoms for a while before the starter died. Also Greg said that a lot of dead starters were because of water getting it there. When I removed mine it was clean.A lot of dust but no evidence of water. What did yours look like? I would still lean towards your battery or a bad connection. Keep us posted

Hey Paul, The thing about the Monster is that they are in the same theme as V11's.Obviously there are a lot of differences but some of the characteristics that appeal to me about the V11's, and some of us here, exist in the Monsters. Italian-Check Big Twin-Check Simple steel frame-Check Air cooled(Simple to work on)-Check Relatively neutral ride position-Check Simple single head light-Check Great Sound-Check If these are some of the things that attract us to Guzzis,it would be foolish to just dismiss these bikes without giving them just a little look.or heck ,do something crazy like taking one for a test ride! I only rode the 695, and bike with nearly half the displacement of the V11,and it felt like it had just as much pull or more than my V11. 95 HP,75 torque are great real world road numbers.A joke for all speed freaks, but for someone like me who loves the sound of a big booming twin humming along a deserted back rode, and if I choose, just pick a gear and leave it there, well that interests me. Also a Ohlin equipped ,carbon trim S model like my Scura,is right up my alley.Tons of options from the factory for performance and trim goodies,at a price about the same as my Scura was in 2002.I'd probably opt for a S4Rs Testastretta.Liquid cooled,Marchesini wheels and above mentioned stuff.Termi's and filter and you've got a lot of fun my friends. Also they are reported to be much more reliable and less maintenance of previous generations. Next spring I'm gonna try to get a test ride on an 1100 and see what I think.I'm gonna withhold judgement untill I do.Just sayin the numbers make it worth checkin out. I don't vote for political candidates because of their party(Brand in the motorcycle world),I vote on there beliefs, polices, and visions.Or how good they look in glasses,..Ha! Blind faith is not a good thing in politics, religion,or consumerisim. I judge bikes on sex appeal, fun, reliability, price and and that Je Nois Se Qua.The V11 has it,but stopping production 4 going on 5 years ago, corporate buyouts, rumors of factory closing and parts availability don't bode well for Piaggio .Ducati is making a modern bike in the class of the V11 and being VERY successful with it. I never considered a Monster before, but rode one at a dealer only at their suggestions as I told them I had a V11.I was really there to check out the 1098,and ended up riding that and 848,and a Sport Classic. Hopefully if enough of us stand up and scream Piaggio might hear it and respond. If we all say were just happy with a ,gettin near 10 year old design ,there's no need for them to do anything.I hope the Norge and Stelvio are successful for them as that might trickle down to the sport-roadster lovers amongst us.Tarting up a Breva is Not the answer. It seems like the collective response from this group on the 1200 sport has been a yawn.I good bike, just not much better than a V11,and not nearly as sexy looking. Ha,Ha, But haven't there been many things that we've had to fix on the V11's ourselves.I would guess that more than 50% of us work on our own bikes. PS Perfect weather up here in the northeast and takin the ole girl out tomorrow. Can't wait.cool fall days ,and no one on the road is what she was made for.

DO NOT JUMP START IT. Get a float charger from a motorcycle shop ala a Battery Tender.Don't worry ,much smarter minds than me will chime in soon, they always do.Did you get a chance to check out the thread on my starter problems?May not help you but a good place to start as I was stuck as you are.Volts should be about 12.8 at battery with key on.So if all your connections at battery, starter, regulator, and alternator are good either the battery is shot or it is not being charged by the charging system.Have you checked all those connections yet? Michael

My recent starting problems, http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13958 ,may not be the same problem, but like Greg and foto say, check batt volts and fuse.In my experience the 15 amp switch fuse blows when the batt volts are low.Do you have dash/headlights?Make sure the connectors on the batt are tight and at the starter.Be carefull to NOT Short the ECU as the ground terminal is an inch or so from the battery pos terminal. If you do, remove the battery terminals, take NEG off FIRST,and put NEG back on LAST. Keep us posted.

The Shiver gives me them, well at least looking at it,I'm sure riding it would be fun, but, http://www.monster.ducati.it/index_en.html , 95HP,75lbs torque,370lbs,a single round headlight, air cooled, ohlin equipped S model.Don't like the weird short cans, and funky rear end. Rode a 695 last year with Termi cans, filter,ECU and that thing felt and sounded awesome.Felt as much power and torque as a V11.A can and filter equipped 1100S model,..Yes Please! I'm not gonna sell my Scura, beacuse I love they way it works, sounds, looks and feels. But when I'm waiting on parts or down for repair,I maybe riding a M1100S ,and hopefully a Testsastretta model,in a few years, http://www.ducati.com/en/bikes/my2008/Mode...TESTASTRETTA-08, Unless Piaggio wakes up,..

Took her out for test ride for several hours, three stops and no problems starting.Showed 12.8 v after ride,off.Re-started ,no problem.Starting volt draw was @ 10.5 Thinkin I got it with the dirty, gummed up plunger.Think that may be a yearly/bi-yearly maintenance requirement as it's been about 18-19 months since I installed that solenoid.About and hour or so from start to finish to pull starter and reinstall. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.Hopefully put this thread to rest!

Greg,no evidence of water inside,so maybe plunger not fully engaging was the problem, Thanks! Hubert,if the original battery wasn't the problem,no need to change it right away, would like to keep it for remainder of season, and maybe mild winter day.I'm thinking of holding off putting the new Hawker in till spring.I'm wondering how long it will last in the box,new ,unused, without a float charge.6 months or longer?
-
Cleaned all dust off, electrical cleaner on all connections, dry lube on plunger. Started her up and NO HESITATION ,she started.Maybe that gummed up plunger was the culprit.Got new Hawker on order,if she shows anymore weak starting symptoms ,I'll put that in.Otherwise I might store it till spring.Would I have to put new Hawker on charger over the winter? How long would that factory charge last? Take her out tomorrow or Tues and let you guys know happens.
-
OK Took starter out. It had a nice coating of red dust around gear and top of solenoid plunger. No magneto fragments.Ran magnet around opening on motor and no fragments came up.Seemed a little gummy on plunger, but seemed to move freely, so I'm thinking that coat of dust ain't helping, but may not be the problem.I think if I put any grease on the plunger it would only attract more dust. Greg is this normal from what you've seen at the shop? What do you guys think?
-
Hi Frank,This is a few posts back, saw that article, but like Raz says no info on lubing.Maybe call EME and see what they say. Think I'm gonna pull starter today and have a look see.
-
Hi Henry, Just put an order in for new Hawker, I'll take starter out and clean all connections, Still don't know if the plunger in the solenoid should be lubed,no one's commented on that,.... Thanks, Michael

Before you guys think I'm out of the woods ,.... Still doesn't sound right to me.Also when these symptoms first started,it was blowing the ignition key switch fuse on the second try when the battery was weakened. I went out today and she started only the first time ,a little slow, but fired.Let her run for a few minutes, shut her down and on the second try ,the battery was weak and the fuse blew.Showed 12.8v before the first start. From what I've learned here,it seems like either the battery is damaged or the starter is going and weakening a 6 year old battery.Chicken or the egg, which one is is causing the other to fail? Comments? Ideas?

OK,Update, Checked batt volts after she sat for a couple of days off the charger ,and she showed 12.86.after a few consecutive starts, she showed 12.75.Starter didn't get hot.Took her out for 75 mile ride and a couple of stops.Same symptoms, she hesitates for a half second, then fires.Chug,chug,,,,then,...fluumm! Whaddya guys think? Thanks, Michael
