I like changing my hydraulic fluids when the wheel comes off; front usually less than two years, rear (and clutch) about a year. By then the piston movement needs evened out anyway. Using a tester looks like great method. Our Resident Pros do it! Wheels Off Maintenance Checklist

Josh was just doing some testing on one of the SpineRaid V11. Pretty revealing. The question about comparing the caliper fluid to the reservoir is an interesting one.

Maybe these good chaps in the UK would set the metal inserts? https://www.zero-limits.co.uk/product/33912/moto-guzzi-1100-sport-alternator-cover

Kosta, how about a link to your cf cover? Your gallery image looks like a full replacement. Although, so does the image I posted from MotoComposites. Yet, here is what they told me, "Of note, our alternator cover is not a replacement, but a cover over the existing one." :huh2:

Since you're getting a late start and all, perhaps the Fourteenth South'n Spine Raid would be a fine, fine via point on your journey . . . (Fourteenth) South'n Spine Raid Weekend after Labor Day Tellico Plains, Tenn., USA *Get there. Bring tools* https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=2842661# (I see it's in the great void between everywhere you have planned to go. But, ya never know . . . plans change . . . )

Hiya, fed! Yer in gooood hands with "dangerous", oh yeah (no, seriously! ) There are a couple active threads in Technical Topics right now on the driveshaft and U-joints. Yet, "dangerous" may have the most colorful thread ever posted: "that bloody farking front UNI joint?" . . . . (For some unknown reason the early RedFrames are awful about this.)
-
Too, cool. Thanks, Pressureangle! So, even the undersized Zerk cannot be faced forward on the front U-joint cross? (That would be such a great access solution with minimal modification of the scattershield collar!) Four business days and I have an offer to ship two Della Concordia CR15 U-joints, without prepayment, from the Canadian supplier, Technomec. $66.70 US including all freight, taxes, and duties. I think this is an excellent offer. Thanks, again, Pressureangle!

So, the vendor I posted in Post#1 tells me the part is a cover only and not a replacement part. I'm not into that sort of thing, so will continue to search for a 100% carbon fiber alternator cover. Good to know about the metal inserts as well as the 3M Scotchgard PPF (Paint Protection Film). Looks like that film comes in several forms, so that is a project just trying to source the right one . . . Is this the stuff: https://www.amazon.com/Scotchgard-Clear-Paint-Protection-60-inches/dp/B004VG8DS0/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1534806675&sr=8-6&keywords=3m+scotchgard+protective+film

Good stuff, Phil. Thanks! I suppose I was hoping for a better option on holding up to the road blast off the front tire . . . Refinish the alternator cover at every valve adjustment?

Why not zero the CO? The throttle angles are not significant as long as the TPS was meticulously baselined at 157 mV using a quality voltmeter with the throttle plate completely closed (no stop screw, no ball linkage attached, no fast idle cam, clean bore). (After I wrote that, TPS = 4.71 volts at idle? And 2.38 degrees of opening at idle? Both of those metrics look rather low for a high-ish idle of ~1350. I suspect the TPS is not actually zero'd.)

Here is a post from our Chief Whip, Admin Jaap, who switched from the V11 to a 1200 Sport: https://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19071&p=204891 Actually, that whole thread might be worth a review . . . At 5'8"/160pounds, the 1200 Sport is just a little ungainly and tall feeling to me. Yet, my good buddy, Goofman, blends with it perfectly. He's more like six foot/ two-something . . .)

I was really hoping to find something not Chinese made. The idea of having the metal inserts is insightful. No known sources of such an animal?
-
Oh, yeah, Andy has me outpaced (in every way! I am sure he has over 125,000 miles on his LeMans. Saw him today. Seems there are other V11 around with more miles than mine. Maybe somebody on wildG and a guy in Europe (?)

Anyone have any experience with this? There looks to be a legit maker in Quebec, MotoComposites: https://www.motocomposites.com/ Offering this piece with several options (gloss or matte, plain or twill weave): https://www.motocomposites.com/products/alternator-cover-in-100-carbon-fiber-for-moto-guzzi-1100-sport.html

Thanks, guys! Riding today, I recall another clue something had gone awry and I did not act on. The week before the failure, the Sport started exhibiting an odd noise rolling up to a stop. It was a sporadic and not repeatable, "rowl-rowl-rowl" . . . sometimes just one "rowl" or two. Reminded of the noise we sometimes get from the rear rolling the V11 backwards. Evidently, that is pidgin Italian for, "Check your driveshaft."

" . . .is the shaft tight?" " . . . easy to forget . . . " " . . . . tiny yoke . . ." Well said, Tom. I owe you an IPA!

I would be suspicious of the angle drive at the gearbox, driving the cable to the white face Veglia. They can come apart a couple different ways. Make sure the metal blanking disc is secured and the unit is pressed well into it's mounting couple. Also, that the angle drive is tightened well to the gearbox and the short gearbox drive shaft is seated correctly.

A brief search and I see these various names for the paint marks to reveal a loosened fastener, and to indicate that "someone" declared it correctly torqued; witness mark, torque seal, torque stripe (Haha - the wife has taken to calling them "Witness Protection Lines" . . .
-
Thank you, Sir! I really do appreciate all of the discussion and encouragement.

I have been determined to be most deliberate and exacting with the torque process on the pinch bolts. I recall someone posting here, years ago, that pinch bolts should be done up in steps, one then the other, since tightening one will slack the other slightly. That done, and applying a bit more torque than I used before (~34Nm, rather then ~28Nm), I rode almost 60 miles/100km, put it on the lift and retorqued using the back-and-forth method. The rears may have moved ever so slightly, but the fronts definitely turned in a bit; just a nudge from each, but about three nudges from each. Replaced the red index marks (is there a name for those?) and made promises to actually inspect them. Feeling a lot better about this way of torquing the drive shaft pinch bolts.

On a high note , I just sat the Sport back on her on two feet. Ready to roll after Four Days and a few hours! This community is AMAZING! Thanks so much to everyone for contributing. ---> footgoose (The Etsy Windchime thing just didn't work out, so I buttoned her back up. )

Pressureangle set us up with a good Universal Joint Thread. Watch for progress (or not) there: https://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20425

This is a V65? What year?

I couldn't leave that image up, guys. It was about the parting out, but not OK when we know the guy that fell. HRC_V4, glad to hear you are making progress! I "know you know" about the South'n Spine Raid in Tellico Plains coming up (weekend after Labor Day), but if you can get there, "Y'all come, now, ya hear?" FWIW, I love that generation of Quota, especially the khaki/forest green . . .
