If I had V11 acting up, I would start with: 1) zero the CO (sure, use an exhaust-gas analyzer if you've got one) 2) baseline the TPS Then, the best and easy stuff: 1) fresh spark plugs 2) Adjust the valves 3) Balance the throttle bodies 4) Fresh zero-ethanol premium fuel (finding such could be like adding melted dragon's teeth to the fork oil . . .) Sure, there's a chance that some component has played up. Or the mapping is just terrible. But those aren't the most likely suspects.

One of my sputters turned out to be a TPS with a single bad spot on it. I couldn't find it reading millivolts on my digital DVOM, but reading resistance while slowly opening and closing the throttle, I could see a*jump* in values (Ohms). It was, of course, just off idle where the TPS apparently spends most of its time.

Yes, the swing arm was removed before, unfortunately before dismantling I didn't note the original size of swing arm alignment. I tried to align it approximately and it drove better afterwards. Maybe you can advise how I can align it more accurately? Kiwi_Roy's method is a good starting point, but first take a caliper and measure the depth to the pivots from the lock nuts - this will tell you where it is now. We measured six V11 at a Spine Raid a few years back and none were the same. With my V11 sitting vertical, I used a laser level from the sides of the front tire and marked the floor at the rear to get them aligned. (I, too, had removed my swingarm before measuring!) True that an exhaust gas analyzer is the correct method. Andy used that and, at the time, VDSTS to set mine. I suppose it was just coincident that the analysis was correct at the CO "setting" of zero. The idle did smooth out noticeably and rose a couple hundred RPM.

I struggled sooo many years with burping/hiccup/sneeze before a Total Expert and Complete Gentleman (The Perfesser-His-Own-Self Andy York) zeroed my CO. It was an absolute revelation. Mine was at "minus 27." Your V11 will never run right with the CO leaned out so. Do the right (guzzidiag) thing, get the cables, and check (zero) your CO. This is Step #1, before all else. At these low, idle/off-idle speeds, also consider tuning with the air bleed screws out a full turn rather than the factory specified 1/2 turn (never could get that to work!)

One of my long standing theories (unfounded and totally unsupportable) is that the US bikes weren't "mapped" for the awful LaFranconi EPA canisters and these bikes run better with proper cans. Any *proper* cans . . .

I'm not saying my 100,000 mile bike is *perfect*, but it is hard to imagine it could be made much better by (re)mapping. Without properly performing the "tune-up" over a series of intervals (4,000 mile/6.500 km, but no more than 6,000mi/10.000km), it seems rather blindly hopeful that some digitization will forgive overlooking the tuning parameters. I suppose I should divulge my config . . . 2000 V11 Sport: 99,050 miles/ Guzzi "off-road only" (Mistral) cf round cans, evap delete; K&N filter in stock airbox with enlightened (yin) intake snorkels; various elec-trickeries; controversial low-mass engine temp sensor holder; 0.006"/0.008" valve lash with slightly high idle and zero-ethanol fuel (when available); CO trim zero. So, yeah, I'm saying it can be done without modifying the mapping. Out on a limb here, then. Heretical, i know.

Roy, How many miles since the last complete tune-up (valves, plugs, CO trim set, TPS, synch) ? Also, maybe good to compare the tachometer reading with the RPM seen by the ECU. There can be a large variance making us think we're idling at 1100, but it's actually 600-800 (ungood). Can you get a guzzidiag dashboard up?

I'm all in favor of changing out the early LaFranconi exhaust canisters. They are heavy and rather restrictive. Pretty much anything else sounds better (to my ears). At the risk of being a bona fide shitgibbon (for which I have have other irreputable credentials), I still don't understand why so many feel that they had-to-have a Power Commander or must remap their ECU. The tuning parameters on these non-Lambda (no O2 sensors) V11 are well known, approachable, and likely to give excellent results. If you, for some reason, can't get the results you hope with an ordinary "tune-up," by all means go in deeper.

Stew, I don't think any apologies are needed. There are a lot of world issues we could discuss among one another . After all, it's why Jaap created this sub-forum in the first place. I'm not sure where he stands on it now, but Scud's observation that these discussions could introduce difficulties that otherwise interfere with our main purposes (everything V11, many things Guzzi, lots of things motorcycling, and various other "recreational" topics from music to cars to travel to what-have-you. I can't speak for Jaap, and I'm not taking any offense by your posts. I respect your views.

That's well said. It's not that these issues that affect our lives, our children's children, and the places we live aren't important. It's more that I would be disappointed if someone couldn't let me help them with their V11 because we disagree on other (admittedly important) matters. Wow, Pete! Thanks for taking such time with the great explanation. I'll share this with my son. I suspect we haven't seen the last of running issues with his V7. He was pretty bubbled over getting back on it yesterday! I really like the V7 - looks great, sounds wonderful with the Mistral! Best! docc
