  3. Hi, Dan-O! Welcome! Hope you find your V11. Not long ago another "Dan" had a green Sport listed from up in Crossville. Worth a look. The spine frame 6-speeder has no shift drum, but a shift "plate" more similar to some BMW transmissions. This thread walks through about all the variables for getting one moving smoothly. I'm starting to think MZNYC's trouble is in the "dogs." Not an owner optional correction as special tools are required. Look for my pm. I'm like 45 minutes from you.
  4. Looks like good news! With the boot bumped off like that, it's time to check a full tune - up (valve adjustment/ plugs/ Throttle Body Balance, and idle setting), once you get the boots cinched back up.

Makes me think of a buddy in high school who drilled a hole through the chin bar on his BELL for to insert the KOOL-Lung-F**ker-Long so he could dig the menthol while wheelying his Kawi triple. I mentioned the ingenuity of it to him a few years later when he'd become a flight instructor: "Oh yeah, that was just stupid."
  6. Hi, Charley! Fuzz on the drain plug is pretty typical. Not likely that it is the remnants of your spring. Where did your spring break (post a picture)? Others have tried the aftermarket springs, but they don't seem to be the final solution. I have heard that talismans and incantations can be relied upon . . .

  8. I'm thinking the level is best just above the high mark with the bike vertical and the stick screwed in. It's kind of a hassle to do it that way, but checking it on the side stand will over estimate your volume. A wet pick up is a happy pick up . . .

  12. I don't suppose it is all that uncommon for the power distribution to be a bit shielded. Luhbo's suggestion to get the power out of the headlamp shell is a good one. He's a smart guy, Hubert . . .
  13. I've run my Sport open from the center collector just for grins. It is scary loud and maybe not too "refined." A couple of these FMF cans mounted to the outlets would be interesting. And, hey, there's a lot of cover noise in NYC and the constabulary is pretty forgiving, no?

Yes, taking the power from the 4W "dipped light", park lamp, or "city lamp" circuit in the headlamp shell would be sensible as the current requirement should be quite low and the power to that circuit does not come through the headlamp switch or any relay, but only through Fuse 6 and the ignition switch. The draw on the circuit is less than 2 amps, so the existing 5 amp fuse should be good to go for your VDO set up. Post back a nice picture of them, yes?

  19. For those of you who plan way, waay ahead (you know who you are - I got your text!), the South'n Spine Raiders will gather for SSR Seven in Twenty Eleven at Tellico Plains, Tennessee. Last year's venue was overwhelmingly popular, so we'll return to The Lodge at Tellico. We'll be riding the weekend before memorial Day (May 20-22). While we are celebrating the *soon-to-be-vintage * Guzzi spine frame, all models and makes are happily enjoyed. It is again, after all, a non-event unaffiliated with this website, the administrator, Moto Guzzi, or any members, posters, or attendees. There is no real plan, agenda, registration, insurance, or support. Yet, a good time was had by all! It's only seven months away. I need to get that rear subframe welded and replace those rear drive seals!

  21. I was hoping dear Greg might have rung in by now. Perhaps they have broken his PC in half and thrown the haft out the gate of the fort? Even with that, maybe we'll see the sequel to Moto Guzzi Big Twins. I hope so as the original is quite worth the space on your shelf. As to the definition of "European", it gets so muddled with all the "wretched refuse of your teeming shore" having come here (or were "sent") to the States to start import businesses, mine coal, and otherwise pop up ethnic eateries. No, really, I think "European" brings to mind impeccable taste, fine design, depth of insight, refinement, and a sense of the delicate balance of life and living. Come to think of it, this sounds like everything I've heard about life in Seattle, Washington. Which makes me wonder, ever the more, how Greg and MI could have parted company. Maybe he moved to Europe.
  22. The lower portion with the 20mm hex should thread fully into the bracket on the clip-on. With the stalk of the mirror inserted, the "upper" black 21 mm sleeve will screw down to make the lock. Properly installed, you can return your Guzzi to the original blurry view to the rear obscured only by your elbows.
  23. The operative term in the manual instructing how to insert the dip stick is "screw it up." Here in the States that means something that, well, you don't want to do to your Guzzi!
  24. Be certain the lower drive has its mount pressed well in. JBWeld the metal disc in place. Tighten the mount to the gearbox and be certain the two screws mounting the upper drive are tight. Even with all that and my third Veglia, my needle bounces crazily slowing to a stop. The best replacement? Probably GPS; although my ZUMO 550 did not outlast any of my Veglias! (OK, I did drop it that one time) Don't shy away from solid reliable expedients:
  25. I'm still waiting for the colder temperatures to see what may happen next. During some very aggressive sport-touring, in moderate temperatures, the Sport made 38-40 USmpg (typical for me would have been 35-37). So, that may be only a 5% improvement. The coldest temps I ride (40 F/ 4 C) have always given me 32-34 mpg. Maybe the next couple months will reveal those numbers. Still, the idle and heat tolerance in traffic remains notably better with the Delrin temperature sensor holder and the thermister itself denuded. Yet, that's only after four and a half months and 4500 miles, so I'm not sure that's "long term" in the 76,000 mile/10 year scheme of things. I guess I say that to be conservative and modest and askance. Certainly, I am not inclined to JBWeld the thermister back together or go back to the (unbreakable) heavy brass holder. I tried that and it didn't work out for me.
