  1. It is kind hard to know what the proper thing to call it is. Could just call it V12SP. or Since in Italian Norway is Norvegia, we could call it NORvehGeeea instead of NORjay...but that does not make alot of sense. or why couldn't they just call it a Falcone!!!! Hopefully they are reserving that name for the MGS012

    yeHere is my colorized version of his diagram. FWIW according to Carl Allison's diagram the yellow wire is Green and Grey, and the red wire is Brown. To get to more of Gary's photos and diagrams, click on the link in his signture. With Gary's help, I am going to do this modification. If I am feeling ambitious, I'll take before and after photos.
  5. The only instability I had was from a rear tire (brand name withheld as I am sure it was just lemon of a tire). Solution: lowered front end and it got a little better. The wobbly feel starting at 100MPH instead of 80MPH which kept me happy till I replaced tire FWIW, I now swear by Pirelli and Metzeler, though I am sure there are other good tires out there, my testing has given me a bias for these brands. Oh, yah, and once I got air born for a one mississippi at 120Veglia MPH, landing rear first and then when the front came down I fought off a potential tank slapper. Solution: I now try not to get airborn at over 80MPH FWIW I was using Dunlops at that time, not that that had anything to do with it... Also for what it is worth, I greatly prefer the Ohlins, but my comparison is with Marzocchi that needed respringing.

    '07 Harley 1200

    I don't get the negative opinions. While this bike is not perfectly gorgeous, it is hardly a V-rod or a hotdog colored guzzi. Harley addressed my biggest complaint by designing it to handle, and giving it more than 55HP. As much as I like a Buell, the wheel base is too short for touring, the aesthetics are kind of cool, but not my taste, and I am not a big fan of perimeter brakes combined with upside down forks. (I think right side up forks, a fork brace and a perimeter brake rotor would make a good set up) The belt drive is arguably a good thing. I don't like the handlebars they put on the Buell. I am sure it is a blast, but it is not for me. However this XR1200 is pretty close to what I would want. I would rather it have the tail of a V11, but I understand why they are trying to be more like the XR750. The mufflers are not bad. I hope they are stainless and not chrome, but no big deal, they sure look better than Griso's big chubby. Another look in traditional racing color: Here is another option: Take the 1200 Sportster and add a few thousand dollars worth of accessories http://www.storzperf.com/images/XR-1200lr.jpg I like the HD factory look better. But the Bub exhaust and spoke wheels look nice

Ti Cans are almost always nice, but what is the point of the Griso headers going 2 into 1 and then into more than one muffler?!?!?!?   12. Yah, the dyno is what turned me off too, to the point where I took several hundred dollars loss trading for Mistrals. But my seat of the pants dyno after I traded for the Mistrals, is what made me realize what a dreadful mistake I had made by trading. Yes, I probably lost ten MPH off of top speed, but I lost mid-range and the aforementioned other benefits. A Stucchi crossover could certainly bring the mid-range that I am missing back, but I am still hoping someone will trade my Mistrals for their Quat-D, SlowPoke? JediOne? Or I have been wanting to find a brilliant welder, shopsmith, that could create something to my design that would fit under the gearbox. I talked to Jedi a long time ago and last I knew, I was awaiting him posting dyno results. I was a little dubious of his modification without a detailed exploration of the innards. I did hear his modified QuatD and it was quite a bit louder Perhaps too loud But I think it lost some of the metallic resonance, as the roar overwhelmed the tinniness. Quite an easy error for you to make. I apologize. As a poster, I should take responsibilty for making the reading easy. I probably should have put more emphasis on the differentiation between percentage improvement in bias versus percentage placement or movement, or I could have just stuck with percentage of bias placement and said that moving the battery would move the bias about 2% frontward (a 66.667% improvement towards the holy grail of 50/50) Combining moving the battery with a Quat D muffler, and we may very close to 50/50. It would be interesting to do the measurements with a full tank, and with a LeMans. I'll bet a LeMans with full tank would have a frontward bias. But this is all so tedious, could we please get back to Molly Ringwald and RedHeads? Got any photos of the size 6 redhead?

    http://www.elexp.com/che_8463.htm Something like this is probably what we should be using, but maybe antiseize is better Antiseize does maintain a nice thin film very well, meaning it resists rubbing or washing away, and because the film is laid on thin, it won't trap moisture like a glob of silicone dielectric grease compound. But for what it is worth, silicone grease is much better than nothing. I guess if you want to be sure you don't trap moisture, use a dielectric silicone spray. Yes, it insulates, but not significantly if you have metal to metal contact. I have always suspected that the insulation is a good thing because it reduces arcing and oxidizing where you NEARLY have metal to metal contact, forcing the current to flow where there is metal to metal contact.....but it is only my theory, I don't think I have read such a thing...

    I too would suspect the grounding and follow Ratchet's advice. I did not know Guzzi ran the lighting grounds through the steering head bearings on the V11 The only counter indicator to it being the ground might be if the taillight dimmed when the other lights were dimming, as it is on the same hot circuit, but a different ground circuit. Still much more likely to be a grounding problem.
  17. I did not say to move the bias 59.XXXXXXX%, I said to improve it 59.xxxxxxxxxx%. There is a difference. FWIW 59.XXXxxxxxxx% is meant as a joke. I could easily be off by more than 10%, but FWIW here is my crude math: 534# divided by two axles divided by 100 percents, means that every one percent shift in bias is equal to moving 2.17# from one axle to the other. So a hundred percent shift in bias would move it 100x2.17# or 217lbs from one axle to the other. I was in no mood to measure where the battery is and where I would move it too, but since it weighs about 12lbs(according to my recollection of shipping invoice), if we moved that weight from the one axle to the other we would theoretically change the bias about 5%. But since I don't know calculus, nor the measurements, I guestimated the effect to be about a third as much as the 5% over the axle, so we take a third of 5% or one and two thirds percent. Since we want to shift the weight 3%, assuming 50/50 is ideal, I determined that the 1.66666667 is roughly 55% of the three percent, but for dramatic effect, and because I think the shift would be more than a third and the bracket would add some weight, I set the number to 59.xxxxxxxxxx% YMMV

These calculations involve moving the hawker battery, fabricating a 3lb bracket, while assuming that you won't add more tools under the seat nor mess with trifling matters like whether or not the fuel tank is half empty or half full. However if the oil is filled to Greg Field's suggested level vs. Moto Guzzi's we have a conundrum and my calculations fall into shambles....but atleast the bias will have improved.

  20. No, you have not read countless reports, because there have been few reports about the Quat-D at all. If you can't count, it is because you are not trying. "dreadful" "horrendously" "NO top-end at all??!!" Come on Ratchet, get back to reality. FWIW Slowpoke got a few more "measured" HP out of the same Quat-D that I regretfully traded away. So what you probably saw posted was my disappointing dyno. For what it is worth, my Quat-D, that I traded for Mistrals, did crack at the same spot that my OEM crossover cracked. As for the performance, the new model shown has improvements over the one I had. Is the top-end dreadful? Hardly. It is purely a swap of top-end for mid-range. The lower mid-range is much better than my stock setup or my Mistral setup with OEM crossover. Put a Stucchi on and the midrange would be about the same as the Stucchi with Mistrals, atleast below 4000RPM. Actual testing need to confirm. I think the Stucchi would win over 5000RPM. 4000-5000 is where my biggest doubts are regarding which is better. In my opinion, the Quat-D needs more done to tune it right. Mistrals you can throw on a PCIII map, but the Quat-D should be custom mapped. If you listen to recordings of the newer Quat-D compared to the one I bought, the sound did improve. I think my Quat-D sounded a bit metalic. Not as warm as the OEM, and not as melodic as the mistrals. But what they do have going for them is that they put the music close up and personal to the rider, which is the only audience that matters. The ol'geezers standing around in the parking lot listening to it ride away will be more tantalized by the Mistrals. So, sorry for being selfish, but I like the way it sounds when I am riding it. It is not as obnoxious to my neighbors as the Mistrals are, and I get to hear it like I am sitting front row at a concert, not drowned out like conventional speakers in the wind. If I were to re-do the Quat-D, I would give it two outlets to balance the music in Stereo. "Durability drawbacks"?!?! Sorry, but you are taking a little information and running away with it. The newer Quat-D is better built than the original. Drop the bike and then tell me which type of muffler is more durable. In addition to the Quat-D being tucked safely out of the way of parking lot mishaps and low sides, the design allows for greater saddle bag options. What I really liked most about the Quat-D is what it did for the rider's experience. The sound banking off of canyon walls can not be described as well as it can be experienced. The handling is also noticably improved, as the weight is lessened, lowered, centralized and moved forward. The Quat-D is not for everyone. I traded mine to get a little more top-end. I regret having traded, and have offered Slowpoke the chance to trade for the Mistrals. He had the sense not to take up my offer. If he is reading this, I'll throw in $200 on top of the trade. If anyone has the newer right port Quat-D, I'll throw in $400....my loss.

    Kinda like this Gary guy on Guzzi's biggest bike in years??? Are some men more fully grown than others? Are full grown women on Sportsters comical looking? Are full grown Sportsters more comical with midgets riding them? My more or less full grown buddy uprgraded his Sportster to the one with bigger jugs. Does this mean he looks less comical? Does Scott Parker look comical on an XR750?

  24. You mean like Martin Barrett All I know is that FWIW, my next bike should have ABS, although it might be a politically correct E-bike, in which case ABS options may not be available. I really hope Guzzi adds ABS brakes as an option to the entire line, otherwise I may have to become a traitor to the team. FWIW today I took the wife out on my usual 200 mile route, but we took the car. Towards the end of the twisties on route 78 near the foothills of mount palomar a car flipped and landed in our lane. It was probably one of the several cars I let pass using a pullout lane. Passersby seemed to have the situation under control, so we continued on. I hope everyone was ok. Giving in to fatalism is bad strategy. True, dodging an uncoming vehicle mid turn or dodging an uncoming wheel is an unlikely achievement, but get ABS, slow it down, take it easy, be smart, be prepared, be equipped, be well practiced, and be alert, and your odds of survival increase. Motorcycles are statistically far more dangerous than cars, which are far more dangerous than Alcohol, Tobacco, or Firearms. But I'll bet old motogeezers are far safer statistically than about every group of riders except maybe those BMW weenies. Just never stop trying to become a safer rider. If you want to give it up and commute to work in Hummer, more power to you, but we can also look at these events simply as a reminder that you cannot play it too safe.
