  1. I upgraded from the Marzocchis to the Ohlins, and I just LOVE the difference. I don't care about shedding time off of laps, as I don't race. I have greater than 1/2 inch chicken strips, and I cannot honestly say the strips got any smaller by switching to Ohlins. What I have noticed is that they are far more comfortable, they don't bottom out, and they feel more stable at high speed, probably to the value of five clicks on the steering damper. Also, since switching to Ohlins, I am on my first front tire that does not seem to be wearing excessively on the left side....the saving on tires could pay for the Ohlins in fifty years!

No, just about all of them will mist up. The fix is to drill a strategic hole, but I don't recall where to drill it
  3. Alright! all that pain and suffering paid off. Many people just flip the channel when Ratchet and I have a discussion.
  4. That may be one of the trade offs I certainly would not make any of the porting smaller than the throttle inlet as that would accellerate the air. I imagine the accelleration of air through the stock snorkles is not a good thing. I am not even sure if I like the two into one concept as it makes the air less still with cross cylinder interference. But I think gaining twice the effective filter media area, and pulling it from a cooler site are benefits over the conventional pod set up. And I speculate the X-cross-over should have less cross-cylinder interference than the stock airbox. But I might pursue two seperate pipes and just go with bigger pods. BMC makes a 'carbon dynamic airbox' A pair of those would be "the bomb", but the only place to fit them is probably under the cylinder heads, and they are not inexpensive, so a pair would be expensive.
  5. If you really want the best results, I suspect fabricating a completely new cold air intake system with large dual pods and intake crossover would be the ultimate. But I don't know of anyone that has done that yet. here is a lousy sketch, in carbon fiber would be nice, but I would settle for abs or pvc. But then again the stock airbox does help the filter stay cleaner....

I think we better inform Wikipedia that they are a little off the mark.
  7. Leafman, did you ever figure this out?
  8. whatever.
  9. And then Victor from FBF(Ferracci), aka ragin'pitbull said,
  10. Your reasons 8 through whatever are absurd. my reasons 1 through 7 are grounds for doubt on convicting the man. 1) my limited experience with friends who have been quoted in newspapers is that the journalist almost always gets something wrong. Usually it is something petty. This clearly is not probing journalism. The author is writing with the enthusiasm of a seven year old in a candy store with twenty bucks to spend. 2) My money is on the more reasonable. 3) Counter claims of no increase in power from pods need substatiation, too. In Doug Lofgren's article, the evidence that the pods do not increase power is not proven because he is comparing two different bikes with two sets of modications. Also he does not mention intake length or pod size. In Todd's claim, he does not mention details, but I have not yet refered to his claim about pods as being blatantly unsubstantiated, although logically I could do it until he substantiated the claim. It would just be rude to describe his claim that way. 4)Intake length, unlike turbo-charging, is key to making pods work. Other things are also key, like individual cylinder mapping and pod size. 5)size matters 6)I'd like to ask Derek Capito about his experience with making Pods work. 7)The purpose of that article was not to substantiate Eraldo's claims. Eraldo has not been given the opportunity to substantiate those claims. Funny, I just read what I wrote on this topic a couple years ago http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?...opic=1284&st=30 post #33: "Eraldo alledgedly claimed that using separate filters on the throttle bodies add an additional 7 or 8 HP.... I doubt it. I suspect that the 7 or 8 HP gain Eraldo was refering to is a gain over an unmodified airbox, and the article's author was mistaken." Notice I don't call Eraldo's claim blatantly unsubstantiated and I use the word allegedly (although I misspell it) because I know that journalist are not good at the details that we cherish.
  11. All he has to do is drop a Dynotec Guzzi engine in the chassis.
  12. Frank hasn't posted since October, so you might want to private message him. I visited him and his bike shortly after he put the short cans on. The bike sounded awesome. He had a welder/machinist buddy of his named Enzo (not to be confused with our CaptainNemo/Enzo) make them out of his OEM Guzzi/LaFranconi cans. Some people thought the set up should have a crossover, but I suspect it is free flowing enough not to need a crossover, but the trade off is that it is pretty loud...not harley loud, but about as loud as I have heard any Guzzi. The other trade off is that it probably needs fuel tuning/mapping more than a pair of standard slip-ons as it is MORE different. I suspect that is why he was very happy with Cliff's MY15M. Still if he had MotoLab tune it, he would be even happier with it! I am pretty sure Derek would be open to tuning with Cliff's software.
  13. There are simpler, but less versatile solutions, like simply re-chipping with something like a Creedon chip. The advantage of the MY16M is the adapability to any set of modifications or state of engine running(sorry, bad grammar), but it is more complicated than installing a chip.
  14. Regarding "zing" I define it as a combination of definitions one and two, which basically combine, to define definition three (all of the word zinger, with zing the expletive form of the word zinger)
  15. It is enough, but it would be greater if it was even greater. If Rossi could do something like win every race for a few years, save maybe a mechanical or failure or crash that was not his fault, he would be up there with Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretsky, objectively the greatests of all time. But the nature of road bike racing is that the equipment is so important and tires are probably the toughest variable to control. So, if he could do the near impossible, that would be enough to label him unequivocally and absolutely, the greatest of all. The amazing thing is that he keeps getting better and better, so it may happen. Winning more pole positions is key. Right now, I think Tennis' Roger Federer and Valentino Rossi are both potentially the greatest ever, but they NEED to do more to prove it to greater than the majority of the critics. Although I would like to look back nostalgically and think that the historic greats were better, I just don't think it is the case. Every olympics, speed records are broken, and the competition gets fiercer. Just look at what kids on skateboards are doing now compared to twenty years ago. They are getting better.
  16. I did about 30 meters of push starts once, only to find that someone had turned my kill switch off.
  17. Thanks for the clarification. Personally from the evidence in that article, I would not slam Eraldo the way you did. The reasons why: 1)It was a journalist's quote, and we know how accurate journalists can be. 2)We don't know if the HP improvement was above the stock box or the open box. 3)The quote probably occured before Todd Eagan or Doug Lofgren had dyno evidence that pods won't produce as much power as an open airbox. 4)We don't know if Eraldo, may also have been testing different intake length, which theoretically could change Doug and Todd's results. 5)We don't know how big of pods Eraldo was thinking of using. 6)We don't know if changing the cylinder offset in the ECU might greatly improve the pods dyno numbers. 7)We don't know if Eraldo had had experience with other Guzzis getting that large of an improvement from pods. And sorry I missed that he has a PCIII. I thought I read that he did and I lazilly used the search page, but turned up nothing....my mistake. So, the problem is that he should be able to fix the pinging on 91 Octane(I assume that it is pinging with 91????) just by enrichening the mixture. You probably would not trust me to do it, but I'll bet Todd could have the pinging tuned out in under an hour, without overly enrichening it. I believe that using TuneBoy's ability to remap the timing is the better way, but adding fuel works too. If he wants to replace the pistons, that is also a solution, but going that route kind of boggles my mind. Another solution might be to add a second or a thicker head gasket. Perhaps we need a poll to determine what most would do. (meanwhile readers are just rolling their eyes as we argue)
  18. What ever happened to "Trust, but verify"? PS do you know you can google for ratchethack trust and verify and get to right place to confirm his quote? And dlaing ECU also takes one to the happy place we call the forum. Polebridge, you may have noticed Ratchethack and I do not see eye to eye on things. He apparently has criticism of FBF and TuneBoy that I believe is unwarranted. I am not here to win an argument with him, but to make sure you know your options. If you get Eraldo to give your bike the treatment that he gave the bike in the article and Eraldo is successful, you will have one bitchin' bike! If the results are not spectacular and you end up with pinging, I would recommend that you purchase TuneBoy or DirectLink so that you adjust the timing map to tune out the pinging. But my guess is Eraldo will do excellent work. If you can get him to map the bike with TuneBoy or DirectLink rather than a PCIII, I think you would be even better off. But I imagine that the PCIII is Eraldo's mapping tool of choice. The PCIII just can't modify the timing to stop pinging but it can enrichen the mixture to slow down the advance of the flame front after ignition. If the flame front is too fast, you get pinging. The price of enrichening it that much, is fuel consumption, and possibly other things like increased fuel in the motoroil and carbon buildup, but I am not sure of that. Perhaps that is why Ratchet's friend went to racing fuel rather than buying a PCIII and enrichening the mixture. Not running an air cooled bike richer than stoichmetric is a bad idea, and in my layman's opinion an even worse idea with high compression pistons. My bike was dynotuned with tuninglink to a nice rich 13.2/1 fuel ratio and it still pinged with my stock pistons. Only a few of us have had pinging problems with stock pistons. And for all I know, it may be due to faulty barometric or thermal sensors.
  19. As always, YMMV You can tolerate a piston swap to fix the pinging. I can tolerate three hours(or even months) of TuneBoy street tuning to fix the pinging. Although I'd like to have the FBF pistons, I don't think it is worth the trouble, and I suspect the rings would be a good portion the price of a new $300 kit from FBF. Also, for the same reason that chains and sprockets are changed at the same time, I'll turn down the offer on the used pistons. However, if the pistons were already in there, you would bet I would keep them. Your guys' solution of going back to stock pistons, I am sure will be fine. I am sorry you are not open to TuneBoy, but I am obviously not going to convince you of its value. The bike in the article did not ping. I guess Eraldo must have had it running pretty rich using the PCIII. FWIW I really would not expect him to trade engines with me. I was just joking. I believe I have achieved seating of my rings, but not ideal seating. All I know is that I tested for two less HP than Slowpoke with a similar setup, and I burn oil, (but much less now, since switching to Repsol, from that French stuff) I now burn about half a liter in three thousand miles, while before, it was almost a liter. I should have done the MotoManMethod. Perhaps I'll get a second chance some day.

    relays

Good advice, but keep in mind that the socket with the five pin contains the most problematic relay.(atleast on the 1999-2001....I am not sure about 2002, but around that time they fixed the wiring that overloaded that relay) If you have starter, tachometer, or headlight problems, be sure to replace it. (and you will of course because you will order a fifth relay)
  21. I'll trade engines with him or better yet, I'll let him try my Tuneboy'd ECU if he is willing to spend three hours remapping out the pinging. I'd hate to see perfectly good pistons go to waste. It is good to see he has a friend who can steer him in the right direction.
  22. PS years ago, I talked to the owner of the bike in the article, and his buddy. All they could do was rave about how it was unlike a stock sport, and had alot more seat of the pants HP.
  23. "I can gain another 7 or 8 HP by fitting separate filters to the throttle bodies," Eraldo reveals, "We're working on that as we speak." Please note that while Eraldo said the above, it was quite a while ago. And while a 7 or 8 HP gain by fitting separate filters is not likely, he did indicate it was a work in progress, and several years later, he is still marketing the airbox lid removal kit with Ratchet approved BMC filter. My guess is that he found that pods did not improve the power as much as removing the airbox lid did. But as always, I am just making a blatantly unsubstantiated guess. While I am at it, I would suggest that the piston kit would have a greater benefit for high altitude riders or from people willing to modify their ignition map Perhaps Ratchet's friend would like to purchase TuneBoy I think JediOne went with some kind of high compression piston, and may have lost power So beware, it is not all good. As for porting, it is one of the more expensive ways to improve power, but doing it at the same time as a claimed necessary valve replacement may not be a bad idea. And heck, if you have the money, go for it. Mike Rich may have the best reputation on the planet for porting Guzzis, but with a slow turn-around. He also sells a high compression kit. But beware, Mike Rich may be guilty of making blatantly dubious claims of soft OEM valve stems. He does site durometer testing, but I have not heard of them failing....yet. 35,000 miles and still waiting for blue smoke and dropped valves. But if I had the money, I would send my heads to Mike, and get his pistons, and Carrillo Rods, and rebalance the engine. But stock ain't to bad, either. But since you live by the blatant unsubstantiator, Eraldo, go for it!
  24. You could just drink and put in ear plugs. It sure beats jail time for infanticide. Or better yet, just use your computer to log into V11LeMans.com to read the ECU thread to her, and she'll be asleep in no time.
  25. Only if 'this is entirely too silly' is Iowanainian for 'yes, there have been' But I took it to mean No, we need more polls!
