  1. Mixing measurments adds to the confusion. Why front in metric, rear in lb? Ohlins give springs in N/mm (Newtons per millimetre?), which as the numbers always appear the same, I figure is equivalent to Kg/cm (Kilograms per centimetre)...? Rear springs: I figure a 475lb/in spring is equivalent to a 85kg/cm which is standard on the Scura also. 500lb/in would be 90kg/cm, 550lb/in = 100kg/cm (approx)... ? I have 10.0 fork springs & 100kg/cm shock spring. Shock still needed quite a bit of preload to get sag. Like Mike I think the V11 will work better with quite small sag figure on rear, I'm going to try 1.05 or 1.1 (approx 600lb?) rear spring but leave forks. This on 02 Scura w/Ohlins, me at 210lb w/gear (UK lb don't know what that is US lb), set up for sports riding. I figure the less damping you have to set to control movement the better. KB
  2. ratchethack, Unless I missed something, sounds like you need a stiffer spring using less preload on the shock to get the sag. Will give a better ride. I think this is what Lex is saying. On 02 Scura the front lower edge of the stock can grounds first on right. You can loosen up the clamps & twist can round on the crossover & up a little on the hangers to get a bit more clearance. KB
  3. I've had weave/flex problem noticeable slower than that...maybe 80'ish hitting bumps/severe dips mid corner.
  4. Paul, I found Corsa very good. Baldrick got my Scura running very clean thru the rev range & has been very helpful with warranty stuff. They are, I think, expensive (but as they're the only m/c dealer I've had service work done by, I'm hardly informed...). I've heard good things about Streffords in Worcester, & Mark at Twiggers in Loughborough was very helpful re the gearbox spring problem. KB
  5. Mathieu, That is a fascinating post. To me, it answers a lot of questions, makes a lot of sense. Thanks . I've never ridden a Daytona or 1100 Sport, but recently, with all the comments from Paul & Zebulon re the Dynotec 1225 engine...5 speed isn't a bad thing...can it be got to change a bit quicker? Lex, When I first got the Scura I posted here re handling problems & very much thanks to you & others I got stiffer springs & learned about how to sort the suspension. It now works well. I agree re s/a,drive & wt distribution but I think the Tonti engine/trans/cradle assy is inherently stronger than same on V11. Another problem, down to tank shape I think, is that you simply can't get enough bodyweight over the front on the V11 in corners. Love riding the thing tho, any chance I get just think it could be got better! Cheers, KB
  6. Lex, I don't think it's a matter of getting the spine to behave like the latest jap stuff - I'd be happy if it matched my 25 year old Tonti... Briefly...Suspension aside, What are the chassis' inherent flaws? KB
  7. Jaap, have you checked the shift lever adjustment, nothing loosed off etc?
  8. I wonder if dropping bracket caused any noticeable additional flex..causing extra bracing on 02's? Yes, Scuras have the bracing.
  9. Did this bracket go at the same time the lower s/a plate bracing was added on 02 models or before?

Gary, I'll take that as an apology then? KB

My only argument is with the arrogance implicit in any post that assumes a superior knowlege of another's needs no matter that the poster has no specific knowledge of that other(eg: If I want Ohlins forks I must be a poseur). Unless you know me you don't know what I do or what I need. Ride a V11 hard & it needs all the suspension, brakes & tyres it can get. Fat rear tyres? Gary, where were you when I needed you - Start a thread, but there'll be arguments! You'll be hard on that CAPS key AGAIN!!! Bike, road & rider - well I agree with that KB

who dat den... ???? Gary, which do you think works better - Marzocchi/Sachs or Ohlins?

Exactly...but with range of adjustment available, if you don't know what you're doing ... There's a world of difference between the feel on mine now from when I first got it...cos I've spent a lot of time trying to figure set up from a position of complete ignorance...NOW it's easier, but at first I hadn't got a clue... KB
  14. Orson, Have you checked bearing spacer length? Mine was too short - knocked out two bearings before I figured it. KB
  15. Had back end set front end going on my 02 in similar circumstance - hit a couple of bumps in a long uphill sweeper- found increase of rear preload helped but feel the behaviour is still there if pushed into it. I also wonder about frame stiffness on the spine even w/ the 02 onwards extra bracing. It appears to me that the area between the s/a plates & the spine should be triangulated, & the s/a itself just doesn't look up to the job. I've commented on this before but most seemed to think as spine was developed on the racetrack we have nothing to worry about...well maybe if that racetrack had been the Isle of Man... KB

Std Scura springs are too soft for average & heavier rider. To get sag & any sort of handling, preload & damping has to be cranked up making suspension seem very STIFF. Only way is putting in correct springs for your weight. Huge range of adjustment on Ohlins means they can be set up very badly, esp on std springs, making bike a real pig, bouncing, wallowing, running wide - whatever you want. I knew nothing much about suspension adjustment when I got Scura 18 months ago. I was real dissappointed with handling. It's took me to now to get it pretty sorted. I asked people who knew, on this forum & elsewhere - you don't need to employ anyone to do it for you unless you just can't be arsed to learn it yourself. I'm sick of people slagging the Ohlins cos they either don't need the performance & can't imagine therefore why anyone else should, or can't make the effort to get them set up right. OHLINS SUSPENSIONS WORK REAL WELL...but you got to put it in to get it out. If you don't see the point, give em to someone who can use em... KB
  17. Goran, Them things esp for people with v short legs... ?? I'd like more r/set pegs but also more leg room. Anyone used Edge set made in UK? KB
  18. I had Raask r/sets on Tonti. They were v. cheap & look it, but did the job for a while. I broke a pedal - thru abuse - but even so they aren't that strong. However they come with set of rose joints rather than pins etc, probably not best quality but I thjink they're worth the price on their own, done a fair few miles on them, still seem OK. (I replaced pegs with Tarozzis but used the Raask's rose joints instead of the crap fixings Tarozzis came with). KB
  19. Brake pistons seizing on? Clean up, check they move freely. Had it been standing a while before you bought it? Check there is plenty freeplay at the pedal linkage. Do you mean lever is hard to pull or you have to pull it in a long way? Is it same all gears? Sounds like you need someone who's good at it to sort the fueling to get it it pull thru revs. It would be worth also checking valve clearances. Some people have had tank vacuum problem, search under "tank suck", causing stalling ( ?). Try search of this site for previous mention of these problems. Good luck,KB
  20. If you do a search on this forum you'll find stacks of threads on Ohlins set up. How much do you weigh? What weight spring have you got? What bike?
  21. I haven't ridden a V11 with the std suspension so no comment, but for me - I love the Ohlins. Take a lot of setting up ( for a know nothing like me) but after 8k miles, just realising how good they are as I get them closer to being right... lack of stiction on the front- hit rippled tarmac in a corner,it floats over it but you can still feel what's happening w/tyre, front extends to keep contact with the road over sharp crests.... There's such a range of adjustment on these things that they can easily be set way out for any given rider - unless you're real flyweight they need heavier springs from std. First off I was disappointed with handling but it's got better & better the more I've understood how to set them. Ever since I had Metal Profile forks on my Tiger Cub - the first money I'd spend is on suspension. Nothing else can work w/o out it. I'd agree most large capacity bikes come fast enough from the factory to get you in trouble on the road (Exhaust/intake mods can help drivability cos of regs factory have to work to)...but suspension - it'll help you when you get there, always got to be worth it. Ohlins? KB They do seem to blow fork seals tho...& it'd be nice to have high speed damping adjustment & a ride hight adjustment on shock...
