GuzzBun, I've had same problem getting hold of them. Had em on order for months. If you find kit available new, let me know would you, thanks. KB
-
belfastguzzi, I've pm'd you on this stuff. KB
-
Belfastguzzi, I had my bike off OYB. Corsa Italiana have been very helpful with warranty stuff, & are aware of this problem. I have bits you can have if you get stuck, pm me. Twiggers also have bits in stock. KB
-
Belfastguzzi - you going to do gbox yourself? I'll be interested to see what you think... pm me if you're stuck for the bits. The new "improved" springs that I've seen looked no different to the original spring. The oversize boss certainly causes the spring to become coilbound, whereas the 15mm boss does not. All the springs I have heard about broke at the sharp 90degree bend. It would be possible to engineer a location for the bottom end of the spring which did away with that bend. eg: a pin on the shift plate. Sweep, I would like to talk with the mechanic who has worked on your bike. If you don't object could you give me a name & telephone no. pm me if you like. Guzzi are aware there is a problem with this spring, but I'm not sure if they know what it is. KB

Sweep, me too. When I checked the action of the spring on the oversized boss in my bike it became coil bound with very little movement. With the correct boss the action was free. I was hoping this was the reason for the breakages. It still makes sense to me & I'm very puzzled by your experience. Does your dealer have any views on why the springs are breaking? KB

Windchill, Do you know which spring broke? - there's 3 in there, one of which is a common failure. What are they having to replace? £500 - must be other damage? Do you use Colwyn Bay?
-
Errr...yup...I have...01 20 28 30 Thanks . Um...does the 02 frame still have facility to fit this bracket...? KB
-
Does anyone have a part number for this bracket? Thanks, KB

Oil gets flung onto inside of bell housing - check there for oil film. If there's a big leak it will appear outside around timing inspection hole. Doesn't sound like much.
-
If you got trans fluid leaking out there seal on input to box could be leaking. It's not engine oil? Have you looked inside bell housing thru timing inspection hole on right (rubber plug)? Any oil in there? It would probably weep out that hole too if seal had blown. Clutch slip? just a little superslippysynth oil getting past seal that would be ok with thicker stuff??? KB

Murray, something like that, set the front going as well for about 20 yards, similar circumstance too - 2 sharp dips into a longish uphill lefthander. I have stronger springs, set sag etc, kept std clip ons. Generally suspension feels good, bike handles well but when it gets upset it really let's you know. I could stiffen up r shock but it's already pretty firm, pos not enough compression, too much rebound. But however good I get the suspension I think overall weight, esp rear drive box, rear weight bias & frame stiffness that'll eventually let handling down. Thanks for your post, seems I am living in the real world. KB

Well... I'll go check in the Ladybird Book Of Motorcycles ...but I fear you may be right...weren't they good lookin bike tho...
-
Thanks Jaap. That's the Foale framed Guzzi done for a bloke at Motomecca in UK. Recognise it?

For size & weight handling's great, but on the far side it can be like riding a drunken elephant who's just had something unpleasant inserted into it's bottom. Sure you go faster on a track & stress more stuff more of the time, but it's not as simple as that. I've only raced a little at a low level but I've noticed that most race tracks are smooth with no potholes or unexpected dips & humps. You get to ride round again & again learn to deal with any odd rises or dips. There's no oncoming traffic, cowmuck, diesel etc etc etc. You can ride round a bike's inadequacies on a track, and adjust it for a quite limited set of requirements, & there's nearly always more run-off. Road bikes got to do motorways/ twisties on same settings less you're going to stop everytime to adjust. Steve maybe pointed to the main culprit on the Guzzi - the rear drive, & that held in a s/a you wouldn't see on a Jap lightweight. It was same on Tonti. I just wondered if anyone else had concerned themselves with the frame. I do think that Guzzi themselves admitted some weakness when they added all the extra bracing on 02 bikes. If you look at the Dr John bikes, look at the s/a mount plates ...look like they're machined from solid ally? Compare them with the cast bits on the V11...etc. Same frame? Re Foale frame. Respect to John Wittner for all he did with Tontis & spine ...but...It's not so much the concept of a spine frame...It was more like a direct copy, rear cross tube, s/a plates n'all....& no acknowledgement to Foale...hopefully Jaap's posting a photo... Al...yeah I've wondered about that little bracket on trans on basis of every little helps...I'm surprised about what you heard on Tontis, To me Tonti frame feels inherently stiffer than spine. Suspension was pretty poor tho... I'm not slagging the V11, mostly I love it, but things can always be got better. So...to the original question...anyone attempted to stiffen up the frame /swinging arm on a post 02 V11? KB

Paul, twin round tail lights on ali bracket: they all list them.
-
watanabetakemasa, thanks for pix. Those bits are pretty much what Guzzi added to the 02 bikes, which I've got. The bike in pix is pre 02. Will check out site later, no time just now. By the way, welcome to the site! KB
-
Is there something you're not telling us....?
-
Paul Smart, thanks for pix. interesting - braces where Guzzi added tubes on 02 bikes. I'll look up the site. I would love to know how Ashley Law (?name) got on racing an almost stock Tenni on the IOM ....There's a bloke planning to race a Sport there in the Manx this year KB

Re: problems/Paul M Paul,I come off a long time on Tontis & to me the spine frame simply doesn't feel as solid. Bike is generally OK ridden smoothly on flat roads, but I struggle if I push it on twisty, undulating stuff. I can get the suspension adjusted better & it could be lightened, but I was just wondering if in the long term it would be worth thinking of stiffening up the frame. I wondered if anyone had any views on/experience of this. Thanks,KB
-
Has anyone any knowledge of stiffening up the frame/swinging arm on the spineframe bikes? (Additional to what Guzzi did from 02 on). Thanks, KB
-
Windchill, I've seen low miles Scura where selector forks shattered. Doesn't sound like normal problem of pawl spring breaking, cos then pedal is stuck (usually in 3rd). Check pawl arm dimensions while box is apart, save you problems later with spring. Sorry you got the problem, Good luck with it. Let us know what you find. KB

......you go so fast that that you had to disconnect the speedo in case the needle fell off... ? good grief....
-
No - I think you're right. Ignore me I was talking rubbish ! Good luck - sounds like you deserve some.

Roberto, Does the flywheel not have a mark that matches a mark on the end of crank, to show alignment for balance? I thought flywheel/crank/ring gear were matched at factory? I fitted a RAM clutch to my Tonti, if I remember right it was marked to indicate position on crank which I assumed was for balance. Does your flywheel have any machining marks to indicate it has been balanced? Thanks, KB
-
Roberto, Sorry to hear you've had this happen. What miles did original clutch get replaced? Were all the f'wheel bolts tight & in place? Was f'wheel ass'y correctly aligned with crank? If this is a failure in normal use that's down to manufacture, even tho warranty is up could you approach Guzzi anyhow? Given Paul's experience, they may already know there's a problem. If your dealer isn't interested there may be others that may help. Further I'd be grateful if you did. 3 same failures on this part's got me worried, & it'd be good if Guzzi had knowledge. Paul, had your Scura been apart for work on clutch before it failed? Did Guzzi say anything as to why it broke? Was it out of warranty? Good luck & Thanks, KB
