Andy of "Old Man in Shed" passes away
gstallons replied to Randy's topic in Special place for banter and conversation
Every time I log on to this forum I think of Tx Redneck and his exodus.I hope everyone remembers him. I can never figure out what made him check out. IDK if it was medical , emotional , financial or what . A man doesn't know what his breaking point is until he reaches it. I just know everyone has one and every man has his Ktyptonite . I remember this quote from someone ; be kind to everyone you meet , for everyone is fighting a great battle. -

It gets harder every time. my closest friend jumped off the Cairo Highway Bridge a week ago Monday and this is the hardest thing to deal with so far. we talked Sundy night and when I hung up the phone I suspected nothing . This one hurts . -

Well , some forums do exist . I will be here as long as possible . The only problem people have in forums I see is , what I post ; what you read ; what you respond with and what I read and interpret gets misinterpreted . I wish there was a way to fix this. I stay away from FB and all the other social media "look at me" forums that want to show the size of their kidney stone or where they are staying in the Bahamas . Me , I want to have my friends and make sure their bikes are running properly .

Unfortunately (and I do not understand why) , some use this for strictly an advertisement area w/no intentions of getting involved .

Well , now that it is behind me. I just started a new job 08/12 working 6-10s w/no time off ..great money and supposed to last 18 mos. Guess what happens 09/09 ? 50% of us were laid off. I could have taken the plunge w/the same results. "life is what happens while making plans" -
I would have to do a looooong walkaround to decide if this bike is ugly or beautiful. Then I would have to ride it a few years to verify . I do remember reading a test report on one of these and the guy writing about a 60mph+ getoff on a dirt/sand road . When and bike reunited , he could only find a couple of bent levers . " I am convinced only a depleted uranium bullet could harm this bike" was his take on it's durability .

To be (going on) a 25 yr old bike , I do not see how this bike did not sell 25k of these every year of production.

O , watch (if there are) some videos on the subject and get familiar with the task . Be CAREFUL so you do not damage the wheel . Take pics of things as you take things apart. You have not lived until you remove the wheel from a 70s Japanese bike and have a floor full of stuff. Use the hammer / screwdriver method to remove the old bearings along w/heat and freezing to reinstall the bearings. These are good ideas. when you get finished and reinstall the axle shaft tighten it "just" tight. and get everything else as tight as it was to remove. if you think you are in over your head , post your ?s and someone will help. BTW , there is plenty of maintenance to do to the rear of this bike while you are there. If you have some buddies w/ the tools I mentioned hit on them to loan to you or for assistance. No man is an island .

You will need a blind hole bearing puller to remove the old bearings and a driver the proper diameter to reinstall the bearings . You will need to buy , rent or borrow these tools. p.s. they are not cheap and do not damage the new parts reinstalling the bearings .

Nice, listen to that sound.

I had that sung to me one time w/amazing results ! -
I was not able to find the package the inner throttle cable came in so it will be up to the individual to get an inner cable ( Google throttle cable repair) and have one made along w/an adjustable stop. J&P Cycles has a kitSKU 10240212 that may work . I can't remember what type of end is at the throttle barrel ? The push on retainer is a Balkamp (NAPA) part # 665-3209 . It will be loose on the cable sheath so you will have to flatten it out to hold . It comes in a pack of 50 , so you can experiment away ! I got the cable stop at NAPA too. I just can't remember the package part # .

The poor connection is responsible for the burnt fuse. That has to be looked at as either the cause or the effect or both. A buddy of mine was working on a Allmand light plant with a no charge condition . One of the two large wires going from the alternator to the regulator had 4 ohms more resistance than the other. He ran new wires from the alt. to the reg. and cured the charging problem. I don't think the "congregation" understands how critical EVERYTHING is and how important every step is to fixing this condition. It will be simple once it is corrected.

docc , I am glad because I don't think anyone has an idea about a sequence of events or any sequence of diagnosis or steps on repairing this issue . I am sure no one knows for sure what has been done to repair this simple problem.

I can't remember the company , I will have to look back and find it but I bought an inner cable and bought it 6'' too long . I bought a cable stop and put everything in place . I purchased some spring washers( I am calling for now) . These look like the washers that held brake drums on to cars. I pushed the washer onto the end of the outer cable to hold it SECURELY in the cable bracket and then put the cable stop in place and tightened. I will try to find part #s tonight and post .

This alternator in the video (i s a conventional alternator) is a 3phase output and the v11 is a pancake or single phase system. you have two wires coming from the stator. Do yourself a favor and repair this 30a fuse connection . Remove enough factory wiring to get to a good unburnt section of wiring harness and install a quality CB and quality wiring and connectors. This advice now goes to EVERYONE on this forum . Stop buying this Amazon / eBay Chinese junk . I don't care if you can buy this stuff for any amount of money. If you flew aircraft would you purchase a reman component for $35 v $600 because you saved money ? I am not 30 yrs old any more and I am not pushing a bike to the next exit.

looking at the nose of the starter I removed from my 02/03 bike I think it will work. Buy it , install it and see if it works.

Before you call in the dogs , you should use a analog ohm meter and check EVERY wire for continuity and every connection. When you rule out everything you can rule out everything. also , a new part is not always a good part. Also , make sure EVERY ring terminal is accounted for on the positive and negative side of the battery.

I would certainly "think" it would . Am I sure it would , IDK. You need to contact the selling company and get confirmation it will before purchasing. Do they have a listing for your bike on their website ?
