Educated guess: 90% of European bikers don't use their bikes for commuting. Leisure only

On my 1200 I do the maintenance myself and luckily there is a real talented young mechanic in our village who isn't afraid of stuff over 15 years old. (My 1200Sport is now that old)

Some people in the Netherlands refer to an ugly motorcycle as an 'hok'. Which means shed (as in garden shed)

A large proportion? We have about 50.000 farmers in NL, and maybe 200 have sold their farm. Most of them have no successor and they sold their farm voluntarily and for good money. So no, I don't think we have a lot of newbie bikers here that are former farmers. Why the increase? My guess is road congestion and parking fees.
