  1. Ok, I have the first one mounted on the Mighty Scura, and it works without issue. Haven't ridden it yet, though.. the lunch whistle just went off. I know you're not going to want to hear this, but changing out the lever is greatly facilitated by removing the starter. That means gaining access to the inaccessible nut that holds the reservoir bracket. When I did this last time, I tried several ways and several wrenches to get to that sucker. This is the only way I could do it, and it's not a bad job if you do it this way. 2016-08-28_11-19-44 by Charles Stottlemyer, on Flickr Just a plain combination wrench..turn the screw until it slides onto the nut. I'll go for a ride after lunch and see if all this has been worth it.
  2. Nice. Hammers? I gots em. Lots of em. You don't build metal airplanes without hammers.
  3. Well, I'll have one if nobody else does. The 20 ton press I have was *just* enough to do that bend. Managed to get one picture uploaded before my gerbil powered ISP started creeping along again. It'll have two holes.. same location as the top of the factory one, and one 12mm above. Still a little sweetening of the code to do. 2-003 by Charles Stottlemyer, on Flickr Even a blind hawg finds an acorn now and then..
  4. I'll finish the tooling this afternoon. With any luck at all, I'll have the first part.. but.. when you are forming sheet metal what the math says and what actually happens isn't always the same. If it isn't it will be back to square one on the machining fixture.
  5. Ok, I'll make the form die today.
  6. I have a little spare time, and am looking into this. The easiest way is just to weld an extension on the original.. I think that's what Phil did. If there's enough interest, I'll make a form tool and new levers out of 4130 with the 12mm extension on the CNC mill. How much would I have to charge? Dunno. I guess it depends on how many I make, but it Shirley wouldn't be over $50. Reply here or send an email to 59.Chuck Gmail.com 2016-08-24_03-08-08 by Charles Stottlemyer, on Flickr
  7. *I don't know* but I've always taken pains to not do something like that.
  8. Excellent work Chuck. Try the shift lever arm extension mod ( I mean its an hours work to a bloke with your skills and equipment) and it will be another giant leap in performance. Ciao My material supplier is not getting it here, so I'm having a look at making some of these while I'm waiting. Unfortunately, it's not just an hours work. I'll have to make a form die to put the bend in the arm. I *could* just make it out of flat stock and put a spacer between the shifter and shift arm, but that wouldn't be very elegant, would it now? I have some 1/8" 4130 just like you make airplanes with, so I have stock. I don't have a plating shop available any more.. central Indiana manufacturing went in the tank 20 some years ago. Probably just have to zinc chromate them with a rattle can and rattle can them red for Lucky Phil. Indicating the hole/slot locations and transferring them to cad.. 2016-08-24_11-26-37 by Charles Stottlemyer, on Flickr
  9. Tough call, but it couldn't hurt to try. I'm looking at making some Lucky Phil extenders as we type. Smoothing up the shift pawl might help, too.
  10. If you have to.
  11. Maybe. Ya know, it *shouldn't* be necessary to put a steenkin hose clamp on the filter. I know that UFIs had some *issues* with their gaskets (I had two when I was using up my stock) and there have been tales of UFIs leaking at the crimp. I had one of those, too.. on the Norge. So. I have been fat, dumb, and happy using the Bosch 3330 and no hose clamp. I lube the gasket, turn it as tight as I can by hand, and then use a wrench to get another 3/4 of a turn. Now, I'm a little concerned. This is the first time I've heard of any filter *other* than a UFI coming off. If I *knew* Craig didn't tighten it enough, I'd feel better.
  12. Uh oh. It'll be fine. Just use SG rated oil.
  13. Crap. There went my bad o ring on UFIs theory.
  14. The Lario pressure relief valve blew off at 20# after some cam junk had gone through it. (or maybe was blowing off all the time) (!!)Here's an extremely complicated fixture, made at great expense to check it. Had to lap the piston back in, and it was good to go.
  15. I ran up to central California with overnight gear and a spare *battery* tied to it. I wouldn't worry about that 3kg weight limit too much. Sounds like lawyer speak. It's pretty sturdy.
  16. Here's hoping that machining and oversize bearings will do the job. But how can we assume that the oil pump is toast when we also know that the oil filter came loose and was sitting in the pan? I would assume the oil pump is still good - it has a screen around the pickup to prevent it from passing the worst of the debris, and it would have been simply recirculating oil into the sump when the filter dislodged. Maybe the pump should be cleaned/inspected though. I came in late on this thread, and didn't realize it was the infamous loose oil filter that caused the problem. I'd still be concerned about the pump, though. It's the only thing that doesn't get filtered oil. I'll bet that there was swarf hitting the oil pump before the total failure. I have a strong suspicion that there was a run of bad UFI gaskets, not to mention the leaking around the crimp, and quit using them.
  17. 3.I fixed an "unrepairable " Quota tank the same way 8 years ago, but have lost track of it.
  18. Or you could do it like I did for $42, IIRC.. http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=62087.0
  19. I don't normally chime in on an oil thread.. .. but I put Motul 10-60 in engines I care about. Yeah, it does get hot and cold here. Does it make a difference? Probably not.
  20. "That'll buff right out.." Well, if oversize bearings are available (haven't looked) I'll bet .020" will clean it up. The oil pump is obviously toast, and depending on how well the oil filter did, maybe rocker arm bushings, etc.

  22. Bowlus. An aircraft restorer I know did one. He said it was one of the toughest projects he's taken on. He tows it with a Model A. Bowlus also made a sail plane back in the day. http://www.bowlusroadchief.com/
  23. Wait wait.. Like I said, the mill is tied up for a while. But... at my age I could use an extension. I'll get to it as soon as I can.

  25. Excellent work Chuck. Try the shift lever arm extension mod ( I mean its an hours work to a bloke with your skills and equipment) and it will be another giant leap in performance. Ciao Thanks Phil, maybe this Winter. I'm perfectly happy with the way it shifts now. I've been thinking about this. My CNC mill is tied up for the foreseeable future with a production job, but if there's enough interest, I could knock some out. We could call it the "Lucky Phil Extension mod.."
