  1. I've recently replaced the seal, after a big leakage. They seem to wear out in a manner that is unrelated to mileage done. The new seal is ribbed on its outer side. The original had a smooth side (where it fits in housing). I don't know that this would make much difference though. I'm sure that if it leaks, it leaks past the (single) lip on the inner side. The steel that the seal faces against doesn't look like the smoothest, finest, most unblemished piece of steel surface that I've ever seen.
  2. or for horsepower, get yourself to e-bay and start bidding... e-bay Q&A: "Q: How tippy is this when driving and cornering? What is a safe speed for it? A: Well it has never tipped over. Of course it is a huge horse built on a car frame, so you need to drive it as such. I have driven this car all around...blah, blah"
  3. This is the guy to ask about a cool car...
  4. excellent, but they're still right – that's one ugly American car. I can imagine that Darth probably has one. You guys obviously have too much petrol.
  5. At least we know how to fix that one now
  6. Well, you're just not trying hard enough, JR. Get the finger out, or I'll give you a B-.
  7. More confusion – I was referring to the 6304 at the rear, not the front forks.
  8. Don't forget about the 6304 as well. You might as well get the set.
  9. Goodness gracious me, Martin. You should pop over to N.I. for brunch some day.
  10. Yes. Pictures have been posted before and the subject done to death. Someone even proposed doing an electron microscope examination (or something similar, which of course came to nothing). Red herrings, all.
  11. Prevention is better than the cure. I think that it's better to check this part and fix it, if needs be, than to wait for it to break on the road.
  12. P.S. If it's back together, are you intending to go to Scotland?
  13. The standard bearing that I have here is 6204 – 2RS1 / C3 There are some other letters on the new bearing box after C3: C3Q86 possibly – I can't quite make out the two last numbers. The bigger 6304 is also a C3
  14. 45 mph can be pretty much a fair average speed, depending upon traffic conditions, traffic lights etc, etc. Travel isn't always straight down a motorway or in open country.
  15. I definitely used too much grease in the whole shebang, first time around. The stuff works its way out and flings everywhere (while, preversely, the water stays in). I have to say, the silicone tape is looking good.
  16. Trouble shooting tail light? Turn the light on so that you can see it better. Use a shotgun. If you stand close enough, I don't really see how you can miss. If you still fail, go for the headlight instead.
  17. Spare yourself further embarrassment. Delete this post and then repost in the correct place (wherever that is). With any luck, you can still do this before one of the LordsofAdmin spot wot you've done.
  18. uh well, we all know that lawn mowers would be much more satisfactory machines if they ran v-twin 4 strokes, but when have the masses ever been right?
  19. I've just done that. I came in to post that you're probably right about the silicone – there isn't, of course, any pressure on the washer. What I've done is put silicone around the outside and then wrap with a silicone self-adhesive tape. Should help keep the rain out.
  20. supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
  21. There definitely isn't a good seal or any chance of it, mechanically, between the washer and the drive box end. Someone posted about later versions of this bearing having a rubber seal . I wondered about silicone – more in terms of wrapping it around the outside rather than coating the washer. I don't think it's great in such a high pressure area as it tears, but I'm also thinking of Hermitite, probably Golden Hermitite, to seal the washer / drive box / swing arm gaps. I've removed the hugger (so it's me rather than the drive box collecting all the crud!) and I suspect that water is working in just as it falls from the sky, whether the bike is moving or not. What do you reckon about Hermitite?
  22. this may be old hat: I just came across it cycleworld article on in-line 4 vs. V-twin
  23. Be realistic, Nogbad – 1. Of course it's not leaking, they probably didn't put any oil in it. 2. The fresh polyfilla hasn't shrunk and started falling out yet. 3. No oil to slow things down, but just wait... Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but just wait...
  24. yeh, that's the stuff. I guess, though, that motorbikes go a bit faster through the rain than boat trailers go through the sea.
  25. I wonder what the difference in the bearing set-ups is? But surely you said before that yours was rusty and you cleaned it out with paraffin? I am using a marine 'waterproof' grease, though it may not be as special a spec as the one that you are refering to. I'm having second thoughts about the inner ring. Next time I think I'll change it back to one with a drilled hole. I thought the solid ring would be better to keep water out and grease in, but as the water is getting in anyway, maybe the hole will let some of it out – though where it wil end-up, I don't know.
