Trouble shooting tail light? Turn the light on so that you can see it better. Use a shotgun. If you stand close enough, I don't really see how you can miss. If you still fail, go for the headlight instead.

I've just done that. I came in to post that you're probably right about the silicone – there isn't, of course, any pressure on the washer. What I've done is put silicone around the outside and then wrap with a silicone self-adhesive tape. Should help keep the rain out.

There definitely isn't a good seal or any chance of it, mechanically, between the washer and the drive box end. Someone posted about later versions of this bearing having a rubber seal . I wondered about silicone – more in terms of wrapping it around the outside rather than coating the washer. I don't think it's great in such a high pressure area as it tears, but I'm also thinking of Hermitite, probably Golden Hermitite, to seal the washer / drive box / swing arm gaps. I've removed the hugger (so it's me rather than the drive box collecting all the crud!) and I suspect that water is working in just as it falls from the sky, whether the bike is moving or not. What do you reckon about Hermitite?

Be realistic, Nogbad – 1. Of course it's not leaking, they probably didn't put any oil in it. 2. The fresh polyfilla hasn't shrunk and started falling out yet. 3. No oil to slow things down, but just wait... Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but just wait...

I wonder what the difference in the bearing set-ups is? But surely you said before that yours was rusty and you cleaned it out with paraffin? I am using a marine 'waterproof' grease, though it may not be as special a spec as the one that you are refering to. I'm having second thoughts about the inner ring. Next time I think I'll change it back to one with a drilled hole. I thought the solid ring would be better to keep water out and grease in, but as the water is getting in anyway, maybe the hole will let some of it out – though where it wil end-up, I don't know.

I've just taken the back wheel out. The new needle roller bearing was running in water (and grease). There was water on the axle when it was withdrawn. Despite being thoroughly packed with grease a month ago and waterpoof grease applied around outside of bevelbox/swingarm interface, it seems that it is easy for water to ingress and lie in this bearing. Best to clean and regrease every time the wheel is off, then.

well, they said that the Y2K bike 'Powered by a Rolls Royce Allison gas turbine engine... over 300 hp and 425 ft/lbs of torque on the Dyno Jet 200...' was done "because it could be", so, now that it's done, I suppose it's time to move onto a new challenge. There have been a number of threads related to this recently, giving part numbers and prices – much, much cheaper than Guzzi prices. I haven't got time to look now: see what a search throws up and I'll look again later. When you talk about rust I guess you are refering to the needle roller bearing rather than the internal wheel bearings. If the wheel bearings are rusty –> I had trouble getting that bearing out, but it's explained in the thread(s). I put in a new bearing inner ring without the small drilled hole to see if it retains grease/excludes water better. You need to get both the needle roller race and the inner ring: 2 separate parts. And lots of grease.

Yeh. Before fitting it I must take this to the factor, where I would get bearings, to see what they say. As I haven't had the original seal out I didn't have any size, number or description to go by.

What a I am. I need a final drive seal, so that half my tyre isn't always covered in an oil slick. I e-mailed Corsa Italiana to get a price and place an order, but true to previous experiences, Corsa sales didn't bother to reply (even though I sent a photo of Corsa's big boss riding his big boss Breva at the Erin Rally). So I decided to go local again. A couple of weeks ago I ordered a final drive seal from 'dealer X from Y' 'cause I thought it would be handy – he's just round the corner, I wouldn't be sending endless e-mails that don't get replies, I wouldn't have something arriving by mail order when I'm not at home and I hoped that the local dealer might absorb the postage cost and the item would just cost the same as if buying it over the counter in England. He rang Motomecca, checked the price, told me it would cost £6 all in, if postage came to more than that he would just absorb it... so I said 'go ahead' and handed over £6. I've endeavoured to get back to collect it a few times but not managed, not least beacause a lorry driver was shot dead in the road outside the shop last week (paramilitary feud). I have just collected it today. I was very surprised when I was asked to pay an extra £6.56: total charge £12.56. I handed over the extra dosh and came back to check the price on Motomecca's website, now that I had a part number. The part price is £3.50! VAT would bring it to £4.24. The postage would be less than £1: I posted a dvd to London today, it was bigger than this package and it cost £0.62 first class (Guzzirider, I also posted the video and it cost £99.99 ) So £8.24 (the price of 2 more seals – no, not those sort of seals, JR –) for... post & packing & a new pair of big socks for the dealer???????? Grrrrr.. local dealers, eh? They sure do have big socks.

The fairing must help of course – I find that the head & neck take a battering on the Scura when travelling quickly.

No, saw the NW200 prior to that time, but not those races (I was too busy out manning the barricades in '74 . I was fascinated tonight to see the (long gone) bike shop in Holywood where I used to get parts for the old XL250. On the programme, the guy showed the new-fangled 400 four. I had a ride on a yellow one from the shop and I remember a friend there counted up what it would cost to assemble one by buying the parts. Of course it came to a shockingly high amount.
