Actually, I'd say: put it on Wildguzzi.com

Or, if by 'misfire' you mean that it sometimes stutters or misses a beat: yes, mine sometimes does, or did, that too. Another thought: misfires on these motors can be caused by arcing through the original version of the spark plug boots. You probably have the newer, improved version? I don't know when they started to be fitted. It would be worth checking. If that is causing your problem, though, it would likely be more serious: not just an occasional misfire.
-
You should fill that hole. Any small gap there will result in bangs and pops (if that is what you mean by misfires). An exhaust paste will do it for now and will quickly show if that is the cause of the 'misfires'.

Budapest no go : (
belfastguzzi replied to belfastguzzi's topic in Special place for banter and conversation
Got away to Buda & Pest the following day. Then back home. Then over to London today. Back home now. Gosh it's the middle of May! NW200 this week. Next thing – it will be the Ulster MG meet. Gosh. (JM - no Brussels-Zinneke for me this time) -
In my book, it belongs in the newer section, although it's also older, sort-of. It's debatable.
-
Now you've tried that throttle business, you're liking it too much. You probably wound it past the running-in rev limit, which is likely to be set at 6,500 rpm. No harm done. Misfire might be air getting in to a join in the exhaust pipe. Check the joints and tightness of clamps.

I should be flying to Budapest now. The only pest is that dirty ol' volcano though. Airports shut down again, flights cancelled. Dirty ol' volcano ash clouds.

Any comment on the relative readings, particularly the spark advice? I don't know what these should be or what the interplay with temperature etc is.

Does this mean that the #68 map was already loaded? Drawing number?

the result The engine felt much better, felt right, straight off. As soon as I started and for the rest of the ride, it was much smoother. It made the previous experience seem exactly like that description of a "three-legged donkey" – with two legs tied together. Wow. Cheers, especially to Pete for everything. So far, the bike doesn't seem to smell as badly; doesn't smoke/fume like it did; and already the fuel consumption looks better. It had been reading 17mpg. Now it's around high 20s. That's after only a short ride. The tank was empty and the fuel stations closed. (Must be a bank holiday thing.) Wa-hey! _________________

What I did, briefly described – not every step. First connecting the Axone revealed these diagnostics: Idle rpm = 900rpm TP = 8.8º I turned the sacred screw turned right out: TP = 8.7º Engine off, TP reads = 10.0º Full throttle = 85º ECU previous programming date: 17/4/2009 info blank Hardware version: 00 Mapping: blank Software version: 0000 I don't know which map was installed on 17/4/2009. Should it have said there, against Mapping: which was just blank? Elsewhere, the Axone does display 2229 GRS8V68 and Mapping GRS8V 68S. BIN but I guess this refers to the software to be installed, rather than what is actually on the bike? Was the 68 map available a year ago or is it more recent? Whatever was loaded, the TPS was not reset and I now know that this resulted in the ECU seeing a base reading of 8.8º/10º (double what it should read). What effect would this have had? Air bleed screws Left side was open 4 ‘sweeps’ - probably over one turn Right side was half sweep open ___________________________________________ Reprogramming: 02/05/10 pass: 155173 2229 GRS8V68 GR8 8V 68S. BIN _________________________ Procedure, simplified 1. Backed-off sacred screw & throttle link adjuster 2. Closed air bleeds 3. Balanced throttle bodies via link rod adjuster, at 3,000rpm 4. Opened left air bleed half-turn to balance idle 5. Installed #68 map 6. Re-set TPS (to 4.8º) & Parameters Revs at idle now up to 1,290rpm sacred screw completely backed-off 7. Turned in sacred screw, slightly 8. Rebalanced: Linkage adjuster set, right airbleed opened 3/4 (?) turn, left bleed closed TP reading with sacred screw out = 5.0º - Throttle shut, screw turned in to 5.1º - Throttle wide open = 85º - Engine off, screw set at 5.0º - Engine on, reads 4.7º > idle at 1200rpm 9. TPS reset = 4.8º with engine off ______________________________ So set-up now is: TBs balanced at 3,000 and at idle right airbleed opened 3/4 (?) turn, left bleed closed (Pete’s notes say to open the air bleed on the higher vacuum side, instructions on Gtech say to open the bleed on lower vacuum. It makes sense to me to bleed the higher side, so I did that (right side) to achieve balance). Sacred screw slightly turned in to give: 1200rpm TPS reads 4.8º

I've just given it a tweak, a twirl and a good dose of Axone syrup. Now to see how it rides. I'll let you know...

I will never, ever, ever be going that way again! Of course the warranty parts that he had supposedly ordered a year ago have still never arrived: I may just fight that one with Piaggio – and then probably give up. I was speaking to someone who ordered parts - paid the deposit money. The parts never came in. He has given up (on parts and his money) and will never go back. We are not the only ones of course. The same bikes are still sitting there, that were for sale 2 years ago. For sure, that place will close.

On to the electronics at last. I'm sure that Pete is mad that I haven't made progress yet, but without going into a long story, I'll just say that work has been difficult. No time off, including holidays – St Patrick's Day or Easter – and any time that I have had for fiddling, I've had to fix problems that have arisen with family cars. This morning I at last found what is wrong with the latest problem, a Renault (spit) diesel and as it is the May bank holiday weekend, I am now taking some time to move on to the Griso. Bike, as people know, has been running badly since recall cam/tappet wreckage and replacement and only made worse the couple of times that it has gone to MG 'service agent'. Apart from anything else, I'm only getting a consistent 70/71 miles to a tank of fuel and the display says 17m.p.g. consumption – which is atrocious. __________________________________________________ With Axone connected, the first problem is obvious. The throttle position is 8.8 degrees and it should be 4.6 or so (isn't that right?). The first job that I wanted to do was to get the 'sacred screw' back to an approximately correct position, using the Axone readout to go back to 4.6. I know the screw has been upset, but as the TPS has never been reset nor anything else adjusted, I had high hopes of getting the screw setting back. However, looking at the throttle linkage adjuster, it looks like it has been turned. Why? I don't know. So my plans are derailed at the first step. Working with both screws, I can't get the TP below 8.7 degrees (idle on hot engine). This is even with the sacred screw backed right off beyond where it has no effect. When I started the work with a cold engine, it was 8.8 at 900 rpm (12.2 at 3,000). What does this mean? Am I missing something? How can I get the tps down to 4.6 I need to get a better base position before I to a tps reset. Don't I?

I'll have to do some updates. Sorry there hasn't been as much info as there was last year. Get back to you soon.

MacEuan: I know you weren't sure to be free, but any more thoughts on getting over for the end of May meet here?

dictator take over on Wildguzzi

Jaap will be needing a salary raise. The current (future traditional) forums are good and useful if they are used properly. They get a bit messed-up when the wrong things are posted in the wrong place. FAQ and How To could be combined. It would need strict management by a moderator, because it's a sure thing that it will get filled up with general and repetitive tech queries. Your suggestions are all good. A difference that I would have, is to keep the CARC (the current bikes) as a discrete section, as I think it will be active and useful in the future. -

dictator take over on Wildguzzi

I think you're right, Hubert. There are enough forum divisions. I do think that there is a good reason to have the Carc forum, as these are the current and future bikes and what many of us have purchased and others will move to. Unfortunately I have posted about problems because I have had so many and forums are the (only) places where we get help from. I have posted pics and descriptions of the good times too and would post more if there were more. The validity of the Carc Forum will depend upon people (other than me) posting stuff on it. In the past, as far as I remember, Jaap was adamant that this is a V.11 Forum only: and it worked tremendously well as a one-model garage. The V.11 is no longer current and as we have said before, most of the problems, fixes, issues, subjects have now been covered: so activity here is just not as lively as it used to be, because of that. Now (for the past year or more) Jaap, and a lot of us, think it should move on in a slightly different or expanded or updated way. The V.11 content should remain the vital essence of the site; and I think tht the CARC section should stay and that people should/could/will use it more in the future. I sympathise with the idea of adding 'oldie' content: but I think that we could agree to a tolerant attitude to posts within the already existing sections. Rather than adding more, there could even be a slight culling / tidying /rationalisation / combining of some of the fixtures here? David -

Any excuse to dress up. I'll come over to yours.
