  4. Wow, not as sharp as some others here- I didn't notice the recessed bearings! Nathan, do you have a bearing spacer? Looks like Paul, Ratchet, BigJ and DVH have enough pictures to set you on the right track. Like James Brown, get on the good foot.
  5. At 135 lbs, you are perfect for the sport! And no, there's nothing mysterious or complicated about Guzzi's. Heck, the engine debuted in 1967! It's about as complicated as a rock. A real simple rock.
  6. Nathan, Looking at your second picture: Well, that didn't work... I'm not certain you have the correct axle. On my 2001 sport, the axle bolt (Right side) is flush with the outside of the fork. That stepped increase in diameter of the axel is supposed to be there- it acts as the spacer on the RH side. There's a (~15mm) spacer on the axle left side. Also, there's no hole through my axle like there is on yours. That looks like an old Tonti frame axle. I could be wrong, I suppose. I do know there shouldn't be any spacers on the brake calipers. Do you have your forks installed on the wrong sides maybe?

  9. I know J.N. Smythe who celebrated his 80something birthday recently. Still riding. I hope to be riding when I'm in my eighties as well- so it's possible that you have another 20 years. In that case, a Guzzi makes a lot of sense. The big drawback or question for the Le Mans models is the riding position. If you like it, then great. If it doesn't fit, then maybe one of the cruisers might fit better- they are also very good runners. Vapor lock shows up on some bikes and not on others- I don't think there is a definitive fix yet for those afflicted. Mostly it depends on where you live- hot weather is bad, and short trips in hot weather is really bad. Relays should be taken care of by '02 but you could order a set from Dan Prunske just to be safe. His website is: http://www.dpguzzi.com/ Orangeokie makes a good point, though. If you don't want to deal with the hassles, then by a one later year model.
  10. Have you ever cleaned and greased the shifter and actuator? It was sticky and dirty on mine (cue porn music) until I greased it up. Now it's slick as goose sh!t.

  12. John, quit reading this and go out riding! The evoluzione footpeg conversion is now the motobits conversion sold by Moto International (and Greg Field). The motobits may or may not be more adjustable- I really can't say anything about it. Here's the parts from the Evoluzione kit and the sides of my bike to show you where it positions everything. Greg or others can tell you if the motobits is the same (should be). Here's my remodelled shifter: and brake:
  13. go with the Maund seat; I'm not sure the Corbin will fit and Rich does nice work. I've had Buell footpegs and the Evoluzione kit. I prefer the Evo kit (but that's just me). The Buell pegs are about 1 or 2" wider stance than the stock setup. Also, either mod makes the shift lever a bit far from my toe, but this is going to be dependent on what kind of shoe or boot you wear. I made a new shift lever...

    Too cool! If the wiring is completely shot, brittle and oxidized, just go ahead and make a new loom. It's really not hard (maybe 6, 8 wires). You could download one of the loopframe 'simplifed' wiring diagrams and adapt that to your bike if necessary. Edit: Too funny, Mr. No-chain.

  21. what Jim said. Check out the MGNOC classifieds. I'd ask a little more- about 3K, but be prepared to bargain a little. Unfortunately, these are good, solid bikes with terrible resale value.
  22. Or you could buy a length of chain to fit? I know it's crazy, but that's what I do for my KLR650. I guess I have a slightly different approach toward the two motorcycles- I adjust and maintain my Guzzi, as it likes that kind of thing. The KLR? I ride it hard and put it away wet. I can barely tell what color it is under the mud. Occassionally, I put some regular spray oil on the chain...adjust it if I have to. I figure the time I save not maintaining it pays for the new sprockets I have to buy. In short, it's disposable. Hmmm, maybe I do agree with you after all....

  24. You can remove the rubber grommet just under the gas tank lid and that will cure it. Not the safest strategy, but it's effective.
