  1. Thanks Scud! I just called Speedhut to inquire about why they do this, and they said it's used to amplify the signal from the ECU, as some ECU's have too weak of a signal for the Tach to recognize the pulses. Knowing that others have installed without said resistor, I know mine will work fine without it. Just waiting for the weather to warm up some...my fingers don't enjoy wiring in 35f weather. Since I currently have the tank off, I'm contemplating running a separate feed for the gauges from my fuzeblock. That way I don't have to add a small fuse inside the gauge housing, and 2 less things connected to the light circuit. Ken
  2. Did you install the resistor as recommended by Speedhut? Seems strange that it needs to be connected to a 12VDC+ source. Connecting the ECU to another pos. power supply kind of worries me, but I have very limited electrical back ground. Ken
  3. Here's how I'm mounting my gauges. 8/32 tee nut epoxied to the back of the gauges with 2" long by 8/32 threaded rod. In retrospect, I wonder if Speedhut would install a mounting stud in these at the time of ordering? That would really simplify things. Ken I wrapped some tape around the gauges to center it in the cup.
  4. I kept the Sargent seat when I sold my 2001 V11S, and it fits on my 2004 Cafe Sport, although it's not a perfect fit. The cowl doesn't line up perfectly with the tail section. I haven't had any other issues yet. Installs and removes just fine. Ken
  5. I installed new salt and pepper grill cloth on my Marshall JCM800 Bass head today. The previous owner had removed the black grill cloth, so it was blank. Ken
  6. In getting ready to install these, the directions for wiring the tach say to connect it to the neg. wire of the coil. Is it the green wire on the coil? How did you guys splice into it? Ken
  7. Vibes aren't bad, but the bar end weights for the Stelvio hand guards are huge and heavy. I've only ridden for about an hour with them, so I may have a different opinion after a few hours of riding. I'm also leaning forwards quite a bit more than I hoped, and I may go back to the handlebars...
  8. I put on Woodcraft clip-ons with 3" risers, Stelvio hand guards, and finished the mounts for the Ducati carbon fibre fairing I purchased. Ken A view of the clip-ons from the riders point of view.
  9. Those look like the stock handlebar clamps that I have on my 2004 V11 Sport. Quite possibly Renthal Fat Bars in those clamps. Ken
  10. There's a little 1/8" rod that connects to two pieces...just like the original speedo cable. With the Dakota sender, they include that rod, and I just need to cut it to length. Shouldn't be an issue. If I paint the sender red, will it read a faster MPH? Ken In this pic, the sender has a cable "pass through" so that you could still use your original cable. I bought the version without this feature.
  11. Not wanting to use the GPS speedo from speed hut, I was bound and determined to use the sped gear drive in the tranny. Kiwi Roy had a great idea using the brass bolt and a reed switch, but I was having difficulties filing the brass bolt to a perfect shape. I found a GM electronic sending unit from Dakota Digital, and figured I could make it work. Dakota said it was compatible with the speed hut guage, so I ordered one (aprox. $30 USD). When it arrived, it was much bigger than I expected, but I thought if I could make it work and painted it black, nobody would notice. I had to make it fit into the gear drive bolt which would require some mods to the bolt (enlarging the top opening where the cable would enter). A call to my friend Joe that works in a machine shop would solve this issue. I didn't want to use the original, in case it wouldn't work, so Scud sold his spare to me. Turns out that it should work quite nicely, so here's some pics of what I did. Also, my friend Joe said he could make these if somebody wanted some, and they would have an inner thread in which to screw in the GM sender. I would need a minimum order of 6, and cost would be about $50 each, but probably less than that. Ken Had to fit the brass tip of the sender into the housing to it would clear the throttle linkage. Otherwise, it would be too tall. Here's how the sender fits after the larger hole is made. I didn't want Joe to drill deeper, as there's an internal stop for the gear. The housing that holds the speedo drive gear in the tranny. The embiggened hole is on the left. Thanks again to Scud for selling me his old one! A quick check to see if it would work. The Guzzi thread is obviously metric, whilst the GM sender is SAE thread. I have a metric nut on the bottom, and an SAE nut on top. Luckily, the GM sending unit gets about 3 full turns into the metric nut, and I use the SAE nut as a lock nut. My friend Joe's creation would eliminate the need for the 2 nuts, as the sending unit would thread right into the housing that he would make. A bird's eye view:
  12. Looks like it's time to get a Speedhut speedo with either GPS, or the magnetic kind, therefore bypassing the gear in the tranny. By chance, did you install the same year gear in the tranny end when you fixed this? The gears are different in the 1999-2001 models and the 2002-2006 models. FWIW, Gutsibits has an extra gear for the 1999-2001 models in stock. Ken
  13. Looking great! I have similar pieces pulled off and ready for powder coating. Ironically, I almost got to meet Fotoguzzi last time I was in MN, but our schedules just didn't mesh. Ken
  14. Need a RH side asap, as mine broke after a slight mishap. I'd gladly take both sides if you have them. Ken
  15. Whoa there! California cold is way different than Wisconsin cold! A high of -2F today, but if I get a day above freezing, I'm all over this project. Keep in mind that I'm going the KiwiRoy method and building my own MPH sending unit vs. the GPS unit... Ken
  16. I've been using his map for quite a few months now, and it works great! Ken
  17. just received my Speedhut gauges, and can't wait to install them in spring, as it will be a high of -2 on Sunday. Thanks again to Kiwiroy and the others for all of the help! Here's what they look like uninstalled...I connected a 9V battery to see what they looked like in the dark. Ken p.s. the original Tron movie is on as I post this... Hard to see, but I went with yellow ticks from 7k-7.75k RPM, and red starting at 8K. I went with the dark blue night color:
  18. Dealing with electric gloves and the wires drove me crazy. I've been using Oxford's for years now with no issues. Hand guards also keep the cold air off of your hands and make the heated grips very useable. I also purchased the Joe Rocket battery powered heated gloves. Next to worthless on a bike, so now I use them with the snow blower. My hands still get cold with those, but not frozen like they used to. Ken
  19. I'm sure he ain't no wuss, but he did just move up here from Florida. He'll get used to the weather up here, and be riding during winter in no time. We had a snow storm (Goliath) earlier this week, and I saw a guy on a Goldwing riding during it with an inch of snow on the ground. He was fishtailing when I saw him ride away from a stop sign, and I thought if he goes down, there's no way he's picking that up by himself in the snow. Ken
  20. Clearing out some spare parts, here's what I have. PM for more pics or details. Ken V11 airbox, lid removed and replaced with a "mesh" screen. Includes filter (I forget if it's a K&N or BMC. Top lid is not included (missing). Includes ductwork to the FI. $40 shipped to CONUS. V11 Fuel tank for external fuel pump only (1999-2002?). Missing tank pad, and some various scratches. Includes key. $120 shipped to CONUS.
  21. Not since the snow this week, but I was tempted to go on the NYD ride in Milwaukee today. Ken
  22. I make some quick brackets out of aluminum tonight, and here's the end result. Now that I know it will work, I can fab some up out of thicker aluminum or steel. The downside is that it mounts to the headlight bucket, and the fairing covers up those bolts. I can't wait until it warms up so I can take the bark busters off...they're ugly, but keep the cold/rain/snow off of my hands. Ken
  23. I found this Ducati Monster CF fairing on eBay for a relatively good price. The problem is that the mounting brackets won't work, and I need to fab some up. http://www.ebay.com/itm/160972741762?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I figured I'd post this up, and maybe someone with more skills than me would be interested in one of the fairings, and fab a few sets for others that may be interested. Any takers? Ken Here's a pic of the fairing with the stock 8" V11 headlight, and it just barely clears.
  24. Sorry I can't offer advice on the stem, but who fixed the speedo for you? Ken
  25. I just saw this on Wild Guzzi: http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=78585.0 I have a Sargent seat that I bought from a forum member here, and I really like it. Not sure if I'd call it a touring seat, but it's way better than stock. Ken
