Share your lithium battery experience; cold environment, durability, else?
Gritman replied to p6x's topic in Technical Topics
Reading between the lines, with an Antigravity you need to change the reg/rect, but not with an EArthX. I’d also be interested in hearing from anyone with first-hand experience, particularly with overall costs. -
Just a quick update folks. The bike is back on the road and have managed to squeeze in 150 odd miles between deluges and can report that the gearbox is smooth as butter (sweeter shift with @Lucky Phil gear lever extension mod at last). No backlash problems, so jobs a good ‘un😊 This bike messes with my head. I only changed the dogs cos I’d got them (but the old ones looked fine) so no real change at all but it is much better than it was….. hmmmmm🤔. Just as changing the plugs which looked fine brought it back to life 🙄 I suspect she just loves the attention😂. Still, I’ll just park that and bank the positives! Ciao

So, this months prize for remote problem diagnosis goes to @Lucky Phil New plugs arrived and tank charged with fresh fuel, prodded the start buttons and BINGO! She lives and breathes. Obviously I'm a very happy bunny and now looking forward to some dry weather so I can check that the gearbox rebuild has been successful. Thanks Lucky Phil.

The last post was from my phone @audiomick and that doesn’t offer an umlaut - as I believe it is called from my vague memory of school German . I’ll use the old frame as an aide memoire for checking stuff out before committing resources!
-
Hmmm. I’ll look at that
-
The frame was another saga… initially I used an early v11 frame with German papers that I sent off to have the Raceco chop and built the bike around that, but when it came to registering the machine, it meant it would have to go through Single Vehicle Approval - a torturous exercise in British bureaucracy that could fail at any one of a number of pinch points and would result in a Q plate registration, identifying it as a ‘kit’ vehicle…. So I sourced a Centauro frame with papers, repeated the Raceco chop and rebuilt the bike which then just needed the engine no change to register it! So I have a spare frame that I should advertise on here. A member based in Germany could make use of it perhaps.

That’s what I thought @docc, but the protractor says otherwise!

Hey @docc the wheelbase is 1433mm , rake 22 degrees

My two pennorth on the tps discussion…. About a decade ago I built my first V10 engined V11 and at that time Guzzidiag was relatively new and while aware of it, I’d not used it. I’d seen folks doing the engine swap and keeping the 16M. I’d had some experience of the 16M fitting a Creedon chip to my Centauro, but liked the idea of the 15M and using Guzzidiag to dial in the fuelling etc. I’d also lusted after an MGS01 and noted that it too used the 15M. I chose to use a V11 donor bike for the 6-speed box (MGS01 again) hydraulic clutch, better transmission and - importantly - the shorter wheelbase and steeper fork rake of the earlier models. Still got that bike and love it. It still wasn’t quite there though. A bit too heavy and you can never have too much power 💪. With a spare V10 motor sitting in the workshop, the idea of my (presently troublesome)project bike began to form. So some 7 years later and lighter by way more than I’d budgeted, here we are. IMHO this is a poor man’s MGS01, and considered that way it’s quite a bargain - and with its old school appearance looks the dogs bollocks. It’s a shame that I’ve aged so much and ruined a shoulder in the meantime but blasting around the Dorset countryside on it makes me as happy as any man has the right to be. This wonderful forum has been a source of technical know how, advice and moral support throughout all this! Thanks and Ride on Brothers👍 Now, time to go and get some new plugs and fuel and sort this thing out. Summers coming 🌞
-
Btw the MGS01 is on the drop-down and uses the PF09 & IAW15M

Hey @Lucky Phil good to hear from you😊 Good points made…. Fuel is 4months old and the fine wire plugs have sure been fouled. Back to basics eh? I think fuel pressure is ok as the pump primes and stops once up to pressure, but certainly worth a check if new plugs and fresh fuel don’t do the business. I’ve considered taking the injectors out to check spray pattern ok but that looks like a real PITA once they are out of the TB’s It’s really messing with my head and I am struggling to understand why a well-running machine can pull this on me after a gearbox build!! But back to basics; fresh fuel, new plugs and see how it goes. Cheers!

Thanks @docc I’m using the MGS01 model as this matches my machine - iaw15m ecu, PF09 tps, 1225 motor with MGS01 barrels n heads. These settings worked perfectly while developing the fuelling map….. It’s a real headscratcher! I keep thinking I must have missed something obvious 🥸

Thanks @LaGrasta I didn’t know that and the blurb that came with the battery recommended using a friendly reg/rect. Also with concerns about fire, I thought it better to be safe than sorry! Especially with the overall cost of the project I didn’t want to run any risks🥸 -
A query here as I'm at wits end....... have just completed a gearbox rebuild and reassembled the bike, not expecting any problems in firing it up again. However, despite good sparks and wet plugs, it will not fire. I've re-checked all the wiring and connections which are all fine. I've even swapped out the crank position sensor (a pattern item was installed so replaced with OE Magnetti Marelli SEN8I3) and ECU (rewriting to correct fuel map) from the working road bike. All to no avail.... It doesnt make any sense. Sparks, fuel and an operating ECU should result in at least some popping and farting surely? Everything else works fine! The only factor I'm unsure about is the status shown on Guzzidiag of 00001000. Does anyone know what this means? Any other checks I may have overlooked?

After a bit of reading up during the build of my project bike, I chose to got the lithium route mainly for the weight saving - its gotta be the cheapest way to save in excess of 3Kg!. During its as yet short service of around 1200m it has worked brilliantly. After assembling the project build I connected up the lead acid battery from the road bike to check over the electrics - but it struggled to churn the engine over on prodding the start button (1225cc, High compression motor). Swapping to the lithium battery, the engine spun really well and fired up the fresh motor no problem, so LOTS of cranking torque. From then, its been Easy Starts, and no issues at all. I also fitted a lithium friendly reg/rect and bought a lithium trickle charger for battery care over the winter. The battery is an AntiGravity AG1201, and the reg/rect is from Ricks Motorsport; 14-001H. Received wisdom says replace the reg/rect as the stock one for lead acid can fry the battery with voltages over 14.2. The pairing works well and maintains 13.5v while in regular use. The bike itself is not at all stock and has a full Motogadget electrical system, which also works well but is a PITA to install! Overall, I'd recommend the change to Lithium if you are on a weight saving mission, but the stock lead acid has always worked well on my less modified road bike and I wouldn't spend the money just for the sake of it -£582 for battery, reg/rect and charger!!
