ANSWERED Time for another transmission oil leak thread
4corsa replied to 4corsa's topic in Technical Topics
Follow up report - took the Scura for a spirited ride over the weekend and after the first 50 miles, no leaks. But victory was short lived - another 50 miles and back in my garage I smelled the all too familiar aroma of gear oil burning on my crossover. The good news is it wasn't coming from the newly sealed shaft bosses, but now coming from the hole with the bolt head midway between the sealed bosses and to the left (see photo above). I double checked my gear oil level which is just a hair below halfway with bike vertical. So i'm now beginning to wonder if it is possible for the vent to get clogged, because that gear oil really seems to wants to escape one way or another. I'm not sure the best way to check for this or how it could get clogged, but if this is a known possible issue, kindly chime in. I can seal around the bolt with something less permanent than the epoxy used above like RTV gasket seal, but want to make sure its not building up more pressure than it is supposed to first.. -
I suggest going to the Mistral website and contacting them by email. I just did so two weeks ago with a technical question and they replied (in English no less) the next day. Www.mistralspecialparts.it

So i did the deed - not my proudest moment of repairs, but i'm guessing it will work. Plus its completely hidden by the starter and cover. I used J-B Weld Original Cold-Weld Steel Reinforced Epoxy. I pushed it into the perimeter recess with my finger best i could and then just smoothed it across the middle. Please note that there were two types of this epoxy at the hardware store. This one is rated for 550 degrees, while the other was only rated for 220 degrees - pays to read the back of the package. -

Tried to find it in your posts, but they only showed your last 4. Sorry, but not quite understanding your fix. The dime goes on the inside of the cover? Thanks. -

Thanks AndyH. I just read all the Belfastguzzi threads - wow - very thorough and helpful. I did not see those threads when I did read all the other transmission leaks threads. His photos show the gears attached to the inside of the cover. I'm wondering how those come off, if they need to go back in the exact same rotational position, and if there will be any way to seal them. I see that Harper's sell a plate kit ($130) - I wonder if that comes with caps installed and properly sealed. I'll call them Monday and find out. Meanwhile, i'm of course wondering if there is an easier way out and if anyone has had any luck sealing the caps from the outside... -
Decided enough was enough with the slow drip from my 2002 V11 Scura transmission side case onto the crossovers. I removed the starter and found the leak not coming from the perimeter seal, but from the round bearing-looking items in the middle of the cover (see photo). So my first question is - what are these? Are there O-ring seals inside the side cover for them? If possible, I'd like to order whatever parts i need before i go much further. Also, what is the large cap nut just in front of the gear selector (see photo)? That will have to be removed before the side cover comes off - any precautions? Other than first draining the gear oil, is there anything i need to know before taking that side cover off? Any help or suggestions (especially from anyone who has removed there side cover) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Nice job. Would be great if you could provide a link to a video once you have it fired up so we can hear it!

Selling the custom vinyl seat cover from my '02 Scura. Features a tri-color Italian flag stripe on both sides, and heavily textured center portion. This was made and installed by a professional auto upholsterer by the previous owner. I've installed my own after-market seat covers on other bikes. Its not too difficult if you have a decent staple gun (with short staples installed), and some patience. It can be installed over your current cover if you want. Its in very good condition, no rips or holes. A portion of the underside has a thin layer of the foam that came off from where it was partially adhered to the foam on my seat. Please note: it has two holes cut-in for the attachments to the rear seat cowl. Please PM me for additional photos - could only fit one on this posting. Cover only - seat is not included. $40 plus $5 shipping within continental US. PayPal payment only. Thanks.

In the case of the stock exhaust, the carbon fiber is just a decorative wrap over the stainless steel canister. This is why their so heavy.

For my '02 V11 Scura. Please send me a PM. Thanks.

For my '02 V11 Sport Scura. Must be in excellent condition. Would also trade for my custom seat with Italian flag on side (similar to Corbin). Please send PM. Thanks

I'd be surprised if it didn't fit. And if it doesn't, you could send it back. I'll let you know when I get one.

The previous owner removed the original cover and had an after market skin put on with an Italian red white and green striping on the side (like some Sargent seats I've seen). Not my thing - I prefer the original. I may just have it recovered, but thought if I could pick up a good stock one I'd just sell my seat.

Should any of you end up buying it for parts, I'll be happy to buy the seat from you! Btw, I just had the forks serviced on my 02 Scura - they are the Ohlins Road and Track series, same as used on many Aprilias up until around '06.

Looking for a stock OEM seat for my 02 Scura. I think all V11 seats will fit. Must be in excellent condition. Maybe you have one still sitting around from when you upgraded to a Corbin! Please send me a PM. Thanks.

My V11 Scura has always knocked (pinged) under hard acceleration - that is until last weekend while I was out for a ride and saw a sign for CAM 2 Racing Fuel! This shop in the middle of nowhere South Jersey Pine Barrens had the 110 octane (leaded) on tap. Since the bike has no catalytic converter we decided it would be fine (he said the engine would love it). My tank had about 2 gallons of 93 unleaded in it, and I added a little over a gallon of Cam 2 ($8.90 per gallon, so i put in $10 worth). We figured the resulting average would be around 98 to 99 octane. A mile down the road I tried hard acceleration in various gears and rpms and NO KNOCKING!! The engine felt better than ever. I'm now going to keep a 5 gallon fuel filler of CAM 2 (I will try to find the unleaded 103 octane version), and add a gallon or so of it after each time I fill it up.

What is best grease to buy for the drive shaft u-joints?
4corsa replied to 4corsa's topic in Technical Topics
Thanks - awfully nice of you to offer to help out while you were in town! -
Going to grease the u-joints next weekend (including the dreaded front u-joint) on my '02 V11 Scura. Planning to buy an angled attachment for my grease gun. I've seen the spec in the service manual for the grease: "Non-saponic, 180 degree (Celcius?),...etc. Seems to be mostly in metric, and I have a feeling when I get to NAPA or Pep Boys, i'm not going to be able to find that info on the labels. Anyone have a proven brand name/type that I should look for? Thanks!

Looking to buy a used front fairing with turn signals, brackets, etc for occasional use on my Scura for long tours. Please send PM. Thank you.

Thanks - Great website! I also found the following info from a previous V11LeMans posted thread: - The seal kit is an Aprilia part # AP8123975, or Ohlins part # 04730-01. Price ranges from around $65 from AF1 Racing to about $180 at Harpers.

Both forks are leaking on my recently purchased '02 Scura with 13k miles, and I need to order new seals. It has the same Ohlins forks as the LeMans Rosso and Nero Corsa models. I emailed Ohlins and asked what series my forks are, but no reply after 2 weeks (thanks Ohlins!). Does anyone know what series my forks are, and where to order the seals? What is the best fork oil to use? Anything else that should be replaced while they are being serviced? Thanks! Greg
