Well, as long as I actually get to Streffords then hopefully all will be revealed. It's not going to be a comfortable ride :-( -

New plugs and leads Docc. Also valve clearances all good. I couldn't get the back of the ignition switch off, so I haven't been able to clean it -

New boots also installed - original ones were both split. The break downs were both the same - sudden loss of power (first time in lane 2 on a motorway) accompanied by prolific back firing almost like it was dropping onto 1 cylinder and eventually none. I don't want to go through that again. ! ! I tried isolating the neutral/side stand switch with no improvement, so it probably isn't that. -

I bought the bike with a PClll fitted, but I have no idea if this is causing a problem -
........ that it's not going to let me down :-( I've spent the last few weeks checking the electrics, polishing up grounds etc, put a new Odyssey battery in and giving it some TLC, but I took the bike for a pre-MOT test run, and I get an intermittent hesitation when riding at constant speed (in this case about 75mph). Also, the same happens at idle when waiting at junctions and traffic lights. This has been a feature for some time, and gives me no confidence in taking it out for a days' ride, which I really hate. Previously, you may remember that I have been towed home a couple of times, and I have never got to the root of that problem either. I'm going to get the throttle bodies balanced on the computer next week but I'd be surprised if it was something as simple as that. Your thoughts, ladies and gentlemen?

Just done this very job without a problem. Was it the one just behind the the seat catch lock?
-
Is an Optimate no good for these. Just bought one (battery) so don't want to damage it
-
I'd be surprised if they were unreasonable. They have a great reputation and I always found them very good to deal with in the past.

If I lived in different circles, I'd send someone round......... for a polite chat, of course

Scud, you're a very naughty person

Ok. That would make sense with the original reg but the Electrex is wired directly to the battery. The third wire from it goes to the charge light. This is the perimeter of my knowledge! !! (Now you can see what you're up against ;-) )

Sorry Docc, just to make sure I get this right - does this mean that the 30A fuse in the block is redundant and should I be splicing it into this circuit? Or is it okay to go between the positive terminal and the reg/rec?
-
The ground strap was already bolted to the engine, but I undid it and cleaned it up for peace of mind. I'm in the process of adding a 30A fuse between the reg/rec and battery, but just wondered about the best position for it to avoid road dirt etc. Should I worry about the wire being routed near any other electrics given that it's AC? Not sure how sensitive the DC components would be to this. I have a single fuse holder but the blade fuse, whilst it fits Ok, won't allow the splash proof cover to fit snugly so I need to locate a suitable one. Edit: is there any reason why I couldn't use the spare terminal in the main fuse box?
-
Yes, I picked up on the importance of a good ground from the reg/rec - I check and clean them both frequently (why only have 1?)
-
That would be in the positive lead to the battery......? (Sorry, I have electrics dyslexia :-()

Once I have access to my bike again (currently surrounded by Christmas stuff - artificial tree, boxes of decs etc) I'm planning on giving the loom the once-over to clean up contacts and check all earth connections. Couple of questions: where is the main earth that runs from the battery situated? And also, I installed an Electrex reg/rec which apparently has an internal fuse but I've seen talk on the forum about a 30 amp fuse from the battery - do I still need this? The Electrex is wired directly to the battery. Cheers. And a very Happy New Year to you all!

Thanks Mr Bad Example! That's a great photo btw.

Grease recommendations anyone? Or will any old stuff lurking in the garage do?
-
CRG - had one on my bevel Ducati and it was brilliant. Quality piece of kit at a reasonable price
-
Any joy?

Don't want to be cheeky, but you have turned the fuel tap back on, haven't you? (guess why I ask......)

Hi Steve, I've been up to my eyeballs with work/ family stuff recently and the bike's been a bit neglected:-( Hoping to put the crank sensor in and see what happens, although she starts and runs OK at the moment. Hate these intermittent faults.......
-
Hi Steve, What happened to those Jota bars you adapted? I thought that they were rather neat - and excellent value
-
Thanks. Progress a bit slow as I have had so much on my plate recently - elderly parents, children, work and work. Have had a couple of conversations about the crank sensor and it looks a likely candidate. A used one arrived in the post yesterday so I'll get that fitted ASAP.

Odyssey batteries have a 2 year warranty, I believe. Take it back!
