Where have all the Guzzis gone ?
sp838 replied to GraeV11's topic in Special place for banter and conversation
Those headlights, whaaaaat..... did they have a bunch of extra parts laying around that they needed to use up? -
No need to apologize to me! I can take some ribbing, it's not gonna change my approach whether it's in good fun or in sincere disdain. Only thing that can change my mind on any given topic is a well argued safety and/or technical concern. But yeah, I do want my Guzzi to be the best it can be, and that means doggedly improving every aspect of it, as much as I can within reason. I don't intend to "race" it, but I do intend to take it to the track a few times a year, so it's not just for aesthetics, I do want to improve it for the sake of performance as well. So far, I can say that I notice a huge difference. The battery I am using weighs ten pounds less. The exhaust I installed weighs a good 20+ pounds less. The new front end as well is much lighter than stock. I can feel the difference just pushing the bike around the garage, let alone riding it. Much easier to shave 40-50 pounds off the Guzzi than it is off myself, that's for sure, hehe... That said, GuzziMoto, I appreciate your coming to the defense of all of us obsessive upgraders!

Sweet! I think I might have to order a pair of those for my passenger pegs...
-
Left side definitely more rusty than the right side. A little but not too much surface rust on the axle, would be nice if someone made them out of Ti... Surprised not to find too much rust on the inside faces of the swing arm. But I can see some rust on the bevel gear where it sticks out of the bevel box... NOT gonna open up that can of worms right now. I have too many other disassembled things right now, and I would like to ride at some point this season. But the bevel box will most likely need some attention in the not so distant future. Seeing what Bjorn went through, not really anticipating doing it until next winter.

awesome, those look great! when you say the rear pegs are adjustable, do you mean the mounting mechanism allows the angle to be changed, or is the pegs themselves that you purchased which allow for the adjustments?
-
The problem wasn't with the spring but with pawl arm boss being the wrong diameter which would cause the springs to break, just fyi. If you're going to bother changing the springs, what you really should do is check the pawl arm boss to make sure it is the correct diameter, and replace that. 2004 bikes should all have the corrected pawl arm part.

Thanks Thumper! I will report back. I wouldn't be surprised to find rust all over the place. This bike used to live very close to the East River, which isn't a river at all but a tidal straight that runs between the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean... And I also think it may have been somewhat exposed during Hurricane Sandy and/or Irene. So yeah, rust....

Planning on doing my rear wheel bearings tonight, just wanted to double check that I wasn't missing any critical new parts before I take everything apart. I have the bearings of course, I also have a replacement for parts 10 and 5 in the exploded diagram below. I didn't see anything else like seals etc, so just wanted to check with you guys to make sure I wasn't missing something... Thanks!

Rear drive needle bearing and swing arm restoration

Yeah, that one I found. It's part number 11 on the exploded parts diagram that I can't find specs for. No worries, I'll just pull one out and measure it -
Rear drive needle bearing and swing arm restoration

Hey Bjorn, have you already reassembled everything? If not, I was wondering if you could tell what the dimensions are for those two big bolts. I'm searching for them, part number is 04558700, but so far have not found the specs... Thanks! -
I have the CRG levers which were installed by the PO, love them. Good luck tracking them down. Sad to hear they are discontinued....
-
Apparently the part has been discontinued. If anyone has one, I'd love to buy it regardless of the condition it's in. I can have it re-upholstered if necessary. The brown suede one is available new, but I'd have to get it re-upholstered anyway, so if anyone has a used one they can part with, that would work out better for me. Let me know, thank you! EDIT: docc, I'm looking for the little pad that attaches to the pillion cover. I've found one for a different model year, the one for '01 has been discontinued.

Those look very nice, let us know how they work out for you! Any thoughts on the rear pegs? Another idea I had was to maybe dip them in this stuff called "plasti-dip": http://www.plastidip.com/ If it doesn't work it can always be peeled off...

Just buy the GPR, it's cheap, made of stainless steel, looks great, and you'll have it in about ten days: http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18270&page=3&do=findComment&comment=195561

I had a thought regarding the rear pegs: maybe getting totally round ones is a way to work around the different angle of the mounting tab. The ones that are tapered need to match the angle of the mounting tab thing, which is different on the passenger pegs than on the rider pegs. Of course, the tapered ones look way better. Maybe only replacing the rider pegs, and just painting/powder coating the passenger pegs black is the easier and overall best way to go... EDIT: I think the Oberon ones are the nicest, and they are made in the UK, not in China: http://www.oberon-performance.com/acatalog/Ducati_Racing_Foot_Pegs.html

found this on Guzzitech: http://www.guzzitech.com/43-tech/creaks-squeaks-leaks-and-fix-its/86-fi-clamp-hose-replacement those BMW hose clamps sound great, I'm buying a whole bunch of them.

I would really like to replace the rear pegs with black ones as well. Part of my re-styling which will include painting the passenger peg/exhaust holders black in an attempt to make them disappear... Please do report back your findings, and if I discover anything, I will report back too.

sorry docc, I'm saving mine to machine it down until it is more air than metal
-
I'll keep you all posted as to how these off-the-shelf options work out. Also considering machining my stock rotor like the example you showed above, it's just so cool!
-
The Galfer one is the one that weighs 2.15 lbs. I should be getting it by early next week. I'd be happy to investigate doing a group purchase. The EBC one is very affordable, cheaper than the stock one. So if you're in the market to replace your rear rotor anyway, that would be the way to go. I got the Galfer rotor off Ebay for $165, which is $20 less than the direct quote I got from them. If enough people are interested, like I said above, I'd be happy to try to put together a deal. I have now made contacts with both companies.

As the topic says, I'm looking for a later model tank. Condition/color of the paint is irrelevant, as long as it is otherwise mechanically sound. PM me!
-
That first example looks amazing. Maybe a little more aggressive than what I had in mind, but hey, why not.

"Please don't mistake any doubts I express for in any way saying don't spend money on your Guzzi. As long as you can afford it (and even sometimes when you really can't) do as much to your Guzzi to make it yours as you can." You speak my language. Found this on Stein-Dinse, shows the rear rotor weights a wee bit over three pounds. I'll take a one pound savings. Not huge, but not altogether insignificant either. Already got the Ti bolts to replace the stock ones too.

Screw it guys, you've convinced me. I'm going to follow GuzziMoto's suggestion and just remove the whole damn thing. I never use the rear brake anyway, that's for Harley riders. (I'll leave the switch so I pass inspection. )
