If the thread has stripped out in the block this is going to be fraught with problems.. Whichever way you tackle it the head and barrel will have to come off to allow insertion of the coil or timesert, (Which are made by Wurth.). The problem is that if you get the drill/insert even slightly off line the inaccuracy/deflection will be greatly multiplied by the top of the stud! Obviously the best way would be to remove the engine and set it up on a jig on a drill press but most people don't have access to stuff to do/make such things. If you remove the head and then use sleeves and the sother studd nuts to hold the barrel in placeyou could probably use the studd hole in the cylinder as a guide to keep the drill true. When you have drilled the case that way you can then remove the barrel and CAREFULLY tap the hole and then put in the thread repair but this too is still fraught with risk. Whichever way you attempt it be VERY carefull as if it goes wrong it will be a bear to fix. Pete

Part of Dave's, and many other 8V owners problems are related to the bike not having been set-up properly or ever tuned once it left the factory. The 8V IS a thirsty pig, but it can be a lot less thirsty if well set up, with the #68 map and the right exhaust. I know, I've done it. Mileage is still pitifull if you cane it, (And they do respond well to caning!) but If I ride half way sensibly and sort-of obey the speed limit I can get 20Km to the litre. Pete

Um. Not that simple. It's a QD fitting, not a hose that causes Dave's problem. Pete

Do I remember that someone a few months ago was looking for a set of Tekno bag racks for a V11? Thing is I've just fitted a Termi pipe to my Griso and the factory bags won't fit on the racks. A year or so ago I bought a set oif Tekno bags, with racks, for my Scura and the Tekno bags fit on the Griso just fine. That makes my V11 racks surplus to requirements, especially since the Scura is up for sale. So if there WAS or IS somebody who wants the racks please get in touch. Pete motomodaoptusnet.com.au

Another superb job! Hopefully this time if he enters it in a show the 'Prize' won't be taken out by some retarded redneck's offspring and a cheap Chinese knock off bought from WalMart Pete -
When did you last ballance your throttle bodies and what have you got your idle speed set at? Pete

If it has the crinkle finish paint one the cases it will, eventually, peel and flake if it hasn't started to already. Cosmetic only, doesn't effect performance or reliability. Pete

When ar they getting to Oz? Definitely my sort of nutcase! Pete -
I think one of the problems is that some people think that if they have a shiny new tool like a Dyno it is going to be some sort of panacea for all ills and running a vehicle on it will, as if by magic, cure stuff. In this case the problem was most evident at low RPM and small throttle openings, basically it was fouling plugs, and most specifically one plug, in city riding. Now sticking a machine on a Dyno and then doing full throttle pulls is going to tell you prescisely 1/5th of f*ck-all about the idle and just off idle fuelling. As soon as I got it warm on the bench it was obvious to my highly trained EGA, (My schnozz!) and my digital mixture analyser, (Running a finger round the coal mine at the end of the pipe!) that the poor thing was absurdly rich, it's idle trim was way off the end of the rich scale. Add in the fact that the RH butterfly was practically closed while the LH one was considerably more open and the TPS was set wrong, (It also had a BR7ES in one side and a BPR5ES in the other.) and it wasn't really all that surprising that it ran like a three legged anteater. It *may* have other issues but it's hard to sort something perfectly when it is obvious that it has been fiddled with by a toss-pot. Dynos ARE a very, very handy tool, but they won't miraculously make you into an ubber-mechanic. Pete
-
(Wince!) Not quite pronounced it cured. More said that I thought I had got to the bottom of the problem which was TB ballance stupidness and a ridiculously bad idle trim setting. (Can't sort that by chasing top end HP figures on a dyno. Whoops! I don't have a dyno so obviously I'm a clueless idiot!) As I said, without riding it for a week in all sorts of conditions it's impossible to categorically state that I have cured the problem but I'm cautiously optimistic I have and have proven beyond any doubt in my mind that the problem was NOT mechanical as the straw-graspers the bike had been to before wre claiming. Dave, I was informed by SWMBO the other day that she hadn't been to Europe since 2001. The subliminal message in this omminous statement is that if I don't take her there next year she'll have my ball on a plate. Now, my Daughter is studying at Cornell in NY state next year, (yeah, she's brighter than me.) so we HAVE to go over to the USA to visit and, Gosh! I just happen to have a virtually brand new 8V Griso in texas! who'd a thunk it! . OK so Jude is going to get the mega-shits if I try and force her to ride across the US with me but I'll meet her somewhere and she can fly legs of the trip and meet me at various places and we'll wind up in NY. After that it only seems right that we should continue on to Europe and although we have friends and family to visit in the 'Mainland' of the UK we actually aren't that keen on 'England' so any excuse to bugger off to Ireland, North and South, would be welcome!!!! 'Local' knowledge is also a huge advantage when trying to find good hostelries, scoff etc. So keep me in the loop please and if possible we can try and catch up. I'll bring my wretched Axone too if you like, (Although by then I hope I'll be able to access Navigator which would mean less crap to cart around.) and I'll be able to do all the stuff your cloth-eared festerhead of a mate doesn't seem to be capable of doing for you and hopefully be able to get your heap 'o' shit running a bit better. Meeting and disappointing people is always fun! Pete

Meaning what exactly Dave? pete -
Dave, I have to agree with you that the fuel ecconomy is crap. this is more of a problem for you 'cos your gas is so damn expensive in the UK. Over here its just tedious that you can't go very far without filling up and there are many stretches of road where that low a range can be a real pain, not to mention a hazard! Mine is *slightly* better than that but not much I'm averaging about 7 litres per hundred but I just checked the dash and my last trip, (ie from last fill up.) it says I averaged a shocking 8.4 L per 100 but there again it also said my max speed on that trip was 212KPH so I *was* having a bit of fun!!!! Now the weather is warming up I'm having a few *issues* with the Fat Duc as well. You know how I said that it seemed to be very effected by ambient temperature and I was having to fiddle with it on an almost daily basis? well now it has started throwing up the 'Service' warning if I adjust it outside certain limited parameters. As the ambient temp gets above 27*C it is also getting uncomfortably lean at idle, so much so that occasionally it will chuff back through the TB's at traffic lights and such. Partly that is the Guzzitech pipe which seriously exacerbates the idle lean condition, so much so that I'm going to change it, not because of that issue mind but simply because it is so hideously, ear-bleedingly loud. I know some people like that level of racket but I'm not among them. I've got a Mistral Ti, Hi-Pipe for the Chatanooga Choo-Choo but at the moment I'm tossing up whether to get another of those or the factory 'aftermarket' one, Probably the latter. The crazy thing is its cheaper for me to buy it from Greg than it is to order it at dealer cost from the Oz importer! Hopefully I'll soon be able to start playing with the PCV and/or the Rapidbike systems as well, but neither of these will improve the fuel ecconomy much. The map is far too rich at the top end but most of the way through, especially in the midrange, it is very lean. Sorting the fueling will probably just make it thirstier. If they could of twin plugged it it would almost certainly of been easier to get good FE. My Mana sips fuel in comparison. Pete PS. While my TPS was spot on ex factory it doesn't mean they all are. Good God! Re-setting the TPS takes about 15 seconds. why won't he do it? Is he scared of the tool? Does he think that if he presses the wrong button he'll kill the ECU or something? Can't happen! @#!#$# me drunk! no wonder you're frustrated!

Lot of fuss about some bent wire? Not surprising I don't visit very often any more is it??? Pete -
John, once map modification is successfully sorted then those that are interested can start the port/flow/cam route. My own feeling is that with an opened up airbox and exhaust and proper fuelling 105+HP is going to be dead easy at the rear wheel. Mine with 96.something at the rear wheel currently and a big screen will pull very close to the rev limiter in top. Any more poer per-se isn't going to achieve a lot. hat is going to benefit us most I think is using map modifiers to enable a major fattening up on the midrange torque. Once I have the fuelling sorted on my 8V in its current trim I'm seriously considering trying a set of 09 on Stelvio cams which are apparently designed to give more midrange, albeit at the expense of a little top end. Not an issue for me, I preffer having 'Big Stomp' between 4500 and 7000 to a few more horsies at the top. Pete

I really can't justify having two motorbikes in the USA. The Griso suits me far better than the V11 so I'm afraid the Scura has to go. sad but true... Pete

The mileage is apparently genuine and there are no horrid rattles from the top end. Not a bad buy for $8995! ;D Pete

Somewhere on one of our computers we have a pic of my neigbor holding up a 5ft Brown we had in the back yard a few years ago but I can't currently find it! Snakes aren'r really a worry, yeah, they can and will kill you, but they don't want to interact with us any more than we want to interact with them. Bungendore is the Tiger Snake capital of Oz! The buggers are everywhere and at this time of year they can be agressive because they are fiercely territorial and this is the breeding season, I believe they are vivaporous as well and the little ones are born with a full compliment of venom! Just be sensible, don't go wandering through long grass in summer with bare feet, make a lot of noise and if you do see one? Turn around and walk away! Easy. As for spiders? Bash 'em with a shoe! Good lord! What a bunch of softcoques! Also all of these things there are anti-venennes for. I don't think you can sow yer head back on after it's been torn off by a bloody great bear!!!!! :-)=). I'm a real sucker for punishment I've gone and bought another 8V Griso, in Chatanooga! Hence the fact my Scura is for sale. Much though I like the Scura the Griso fits me to a Tee and it was at a price I just couldn't say 'No' to. $8995 and only 170 miles on the clock! Pete
-
well, due to the purchase of aother 8V Griso in Chatanooga of all places my Scura has to go! Plated in Texas it is currently living in Los Angeles. It has; Low miles, Can't remember exactly what but not many for its age. Staintune exhausts. Twin plate clutch. Re-sprung suspension for people who aren't 'Anorexic Cheerleaders'.(These are the groovy Yella Ohlins.) PCIII Roper baffle plate. Small rubber chicken. I purchased the bike a couple of years back from a member here, sent it to MPH in Houston for a thorough going through, (It was there that it was re-sprung, had the rwin plate clutch put in and had the bevelbox overhauled, can't remember why??) I then rode it to the National Rally in Malibu last year and had a bit of fun in the California hills and since then it has lived in an air conditioned warehouse connected to a battery tender and is periodically taken out for a flog by my mate Jon to keep it healthy! $6250.00 US will make it yours, (The work at MPH cost me about three grand.) Contact me via email motomoda optusnet.com.au with the replaced by an ampersand. Pete
