  3. There is one other interesting chapter in the story of Lambretta, and that is the tale of their would-be racer that never did make it to the classical grand prix circuits. Designed in 1951, by Ing. Salmaggi, the 250cc Moto Lambretta was certainly unique, as well as being one of the most beautiful racing bikes ever built. The engine was a four-stroke 90 degree V-twin set transversally in the frame. It had a bore and stroke of 54 by 54 mm. The drive to single overhead camshafts was by vertical shafts and bevel gears, and no less than three coil springs were used on each valve. The crankcase contained the roller bearing lower end and oil tank, with fins cast on the lower half to aid in heat dissipation. The crankshaft was in line with the frame, so it was only logical to mount an in-line gearbox behind the engine and then use shaft drive. The gearbox was a five-speed unit, and, typically Latin heel-and-toe shift lever was used. The magneto was mounted under a cover at the front of the crankcase. The frame used was quite unorthodox for those days, with a large diameter backhone, and the engine serving as part of the frame section. An orthodox swinging-arm rear suspension was used in conjunction with a telescopic front fork, but the drive shaft was contained in the left side swinging-arm tube. Huge air-cooled brakes were used that were located in deeply finned full width hubs, and tire sizes were 2.75-21 front and 3.00-21 rear. The first prototype built featured an unusual torsion bar rear suspension and a dry sump oil system, but Salmaggi quickly changed this to the above specifications after preliminary tests. Painted a deep red and with all the polished aluminum, the Moto Lambretta was a beautiful sight to behold. It was also a potent performer, with its 28 bhp output comparing favorably to the 27 bhp that the all conquering Moto Guzzi 250s produced. The 5.8-gal. fuel tank was gracefully contoured for the rider's arms, and the twin carburetors and long megaphones added a touch of styling that made the bike appear fast even at rest. The exotic 250 never made it to the race track, though, probably because the record attempts with the streamliner had succeeded so admirably in bringing the company the desired publicity. With some development. plus a good rider, the Twin could have certainly have been a winner, but it faded away until it is now just a beautiful bit of history in the Innocenti museum. ------- Not quiet the same material yet - still looking for your picture

  5. It's a matter of perspective, and recall. By the time you've refreshed your memory from your original notes made at the time or as soon as practicable thereafter. You then have the honest held belief that its correct. So it's not perjury. Seriously, it's not worth trying to fit some one up. Especially for a traffic offence. I don't think it's just me that holds honesty and integrity Sacra Scent. I can still remember the first case I lost at crown court, a minor assault on me. I told it how it was and he was aquitted. I was devastated, I felt that my integrity was being questioned. Defence lawyers have their job to do. Its not one I would want to do. Represent their clients best intrests: put the best spin on the facts or find a procedurel error leading to case being droped etc. Not to lie though. This is helped through the rules of disclosure, though the defence also has to disclose the out line of their case as well these days over herE. It can be difficult, its impossible to be verbatum. Especialy having been rolling on the floor fighting with some violent drunk. To remember how many times he's used the F and C words. I remember one day in court over a Shoplifter that had been pointed out to me. I challenged him about the lump under his jacket and he responded "Nothing, It's mine." No comment interviews after arrest. After statements had been served etc. the defence tactic was to try and convince the bench what had been said was "It's nothing to do with me" and say he was innocently holding it for an unnamed third party. Attempting to cast doubts on my ablity to remember what he had said to me. He was convicted, I spent a day in court over a poxy T shirt. Justice is not cost effective or can realy be meassured fiscally. Over here the money from fines etc go to the lord chancellors dept. Only recently speed camera revenue has been aloud to be kept to plow back into more speed cameras. I can't dip into it for overtime. Yeah, when I first joined I thought it was like the Boy Scouts but for grown ups. "A Constable is a citizen, locally appointed, but having authority under the Crown for the protection of life and property, maintenance of order, prevention and detection of crime and prosecution of offenders against the Peace." Giving Enzo a ticket for speeding would come under the last role. But we can dress it up as casualty reduction which bumps it to numer 1. nb this is my experiance of the law over the last 20 years as applies to my little bit of England and Wales Gosh what a long post and I haven't touched on Pursuits or Use of Force And for those who made it to the end Q- Whats yellow and hangs in bunches A- Traffic Officers
  6. Thank you for all the clues. I was totally stumped. Buts all fair in the hunt for quiz points. I am the Quiz point Whore.
  7. The 1923 Temple Anzani was a special machine built by Claude Temple in the UK, using a French built Anzani engine. A magnificent looking machine, this machine set a record of 174.6km/h on the banked Brooklands circuit in Oct 1923. Two years later constructor Claude Temple became the first man to cover 100 miles in an hour on a motorcycle using this bike.
  8. No still the same, Are they public albums? Perhaps the link posted is via "my album" and your cookies fill the rest in? Tried a member search on tikkanen and soren, got no matches with what appeared to be possibly your account, other than one featuring an awfull lot of snow! So need to know account name to find them
  9. Don't blame you, my standard mount broke one of its welds. The reweld only lasted a couple of days, so was replaced with an L shaped braceing piece, ugly but effective. Sorry no pic - going out to rectify Oops need a touch of rust proofing.
  10. Don't know how much wear and presure walking like that will put on her hips and spine. But think a lot, so won't be long be she is really suffering. But my real concern is evolutionary. I think bipedalisum then led to incresed brain size, improved manual dexterity etc etc to the point we are at now. Are we about to be replaced by our former best friends? I was expecting enviromental disaster either man made or natural to be our demise. Could accept space aliens unlikely but possible. But dogs!!!! I thought ants would inherit the earth when were done. Need to tell Tony, he and his big friend George will save us. 1/2 Term holiday Kids all at home, not been out on the bike for a couple of days, are they getting to me, am I loosing my grip?
  11. Chris, whats the ratio V11 to Buell?
  12. No, but I've got in the garage my dads old Bultaco Sherpa T and an ex works Fantic 301 mono shock a hybrid between two models. Both need a bit of work but will sort out so that the eldest can develop machine skills before he hits the road at 16. As we live in a moderate sized town he doesn't ride his pedalcycle much, and his legs seem decorative, he won't have developed much road sense. It fact at 13 I don't think hes got much or any sense at all Bet my dad used to say the same. My Mums got a bit of land on the edge of the new forest and the Southampton Vikings hold a trial there (or have a few sections) a couple of times a year. So will trailer them down there for a weekend of mudplugging and naggery. That allways was my objective, Helped by at the time I rode a Yamaha TY175 and my mate used the Bultaco. Machines of different eras. I never trialed the Fantic competively. It was as a bigger leap forward from the TY as that from the Bultaco.
  13. Me too, though Trials. Taught me mainly how to fall off. I crash really well. Very relaxed about it. In total 5 times on the bike all single vehicle accidents all but one due to ice (day time) or change of surface gravel or mud (night time), just the one through inattention going in to a roundabout a speed, lost the front I think, not sure wasn't paying attention, mind was else where. Just the once in the car where nodded off briefly, just enougth to catch the inside kerb start a bounce, unable to correct, and off into the field end over end. Just relax in to the seat. Anyone want a lift? Serriously nothing for over 10 years. Offroading teaches loads about change in surfaces, machine control and balance. Before any of my boys or daughter hit the streets they will be going off road first.
  14. Antonio, the dates were confirmed in V11 and Buell Weekend July 2005, A Highland Fling Pinned at the top of page, Hope you can make it, I'm booked in allready. Be nice to see you there
  15. Is it only me doing these? I claim my first quiz point for spotting the deliberate ommision of Quiz 6
  16. Keith, You do not have to say (post) anything. However your defence at court may be harmed if you rely on something that you did not mention when questioned. What you do say (post) may be given in evidence. Do you want a fixed penalty ticket or should I send a summons No too fat still to fit in my leathers , too chicken, too much also going on at home to have too many days away. Would like to try one in a couple of years when I've finished paying for the Guzzi just in case worst case senario. Are you doing the V11 & Buell Highland fling thing ? I use windows and IE explorer might be different if on a mac Click on the quote box above; high light the text I want to quote; copy it - I use Ctrl & Insert though you could use the drop down from edit or Crtl + c; place the cursor one click after the box; then Paste I use Shift & Insert or could use.....; ensure the cursor is one space clear of thext and then click on quote box above to close. Then comes the clever bit - type as normal and when I want to repeat from step 1. The bit I cant do is the bit in little letters which says who you're quoteing Like anything, easy if you know difficult if you don't. Right how many quiz points did I miss out on, checking to see if any left for the taking
  17. The wife does that Last night had given up my day off so was working overtime. Use the term working lightly. I was taking 999 calls, and it was relatively slow. You have to have a bit of over capacity built in so that when something happens for example on the motorway and you get several calls, they stand a chance of being answered promptly. You never know in amongst the 15 calls you get about the plastic bucket on the motorway there will be calls about other emergencys and the other things people ring up for on the nines. The whole telephone call handling thing has been pretty dire in my force, but they've shaken it up and added new technology - call stacking, amongst other things to improve it. No longer are people waiting 40 minutes being bounced to and fro the switch board waiting to get answered. At peak times the maximum wait gets between 5 to 10 minutes and generally a lot less. The nines get answered instantly, the Goverments target is 80% within 10 seconds. Only a slight delay in switching active window detracting from my measurable performance No, just had the time and inclination. A little bit of intrest. When I started off My friend was restoring a BSA A65 to ride when he turned 17. I used to tease him that my Mobylette moped was older. Tonight I won't be able to play as I'm on the radio, and will be too busy, coordinating the chases of stunt bikers, I'll put a responce on that thread in due course. So give up your Friday night out, stay in and win Quiz Points
