Richard Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Does anyone know if the triangle piece fitted between the frame and the top of the bell housing is actually needed, as the V11s don't seem to have it? Also, has anyone with an 1100i had any issues getting the engine back into the frame? Mine always requires a little "persuading"!!! Cheers Richard
Paul Minnaert Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 well, needed is a big word, it won't hurt. First v11 sport had them too, leter v11 have other stenghtening pieces. What is the problem getting engine back? you do it with gearbox or gearbox first?
Guest ratchethack Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Does anyone know if the triangle piece fitted between the frame and the top of the bell housing is actually needed, as the V11s don't seem to have it? Richard, to be Clintonian about it (sorry, it's an American colloquialism based on one of the many follies of a former President ), it depends on what the meaning of "need" is. The "short frame" V11 Sports had a provision for mounting the piastra colleg (Guzzi service manual term for the part) via a welded frame tang, but shipped (to the US anyway) without the piece itself. I made one up and installed it, see thread here: http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?...ost&p=73821 I don't recommend doing this. Though my "little" project was 100% successful, it was one of those things that looks simple enough up front but ends up otherwise in practice. The requisite effort level wound up being off the charts. Though there may be a subjective "peace of mind" dividend here, IMHO the real-world perceptible benefits would be slim to zip, with the emphasis on zip. BAA, TJM, & YMMV
Richard Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 well, needed is a big word, it won't hurt. First v11 sport had them too, leter v11 have other stenghtening pieces. What is the problem getting engine back? you do it with gearbox or gearbox first? I was just wondering as to the function of it.... The problem with getting the engine back into the frame is that if I put the bolts into the front end first, then the whole unit sits too far back to get any of the gearbox mounting bolts in, or if I do it the other way round and put the gearbox bolts in first then I can't get two of the front mounting bolts in...
docc Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I added one to my 2000 Sport having bought the part from Guzzi. It took a little f'naggling to install but no big deal. this post shows the part and part number. It is notable that the early RedFrames did have a few reported gearbox case cracks at the rearmost mounting point on the left. Mine was one and the process of finding it and correcting it undr warranty took months. Adding the tertiary intermediate mounting plate looks likegood engineering to me. Why they left it off . . . ? After the frame changes ( was that '02?) there is no bracket to mount this plate. There are, however, cross braces in the lower rear subframe with struts on both sides projecting forward to the engine case and changes to the front subframe as well.

Hey Docc -- I don't know about you, but installing mine was no walk in the park. After I finally got untwisted from bolting mine in place, I had to gimp meself over to the Chiropractor to get my own spine aligned. . . . Matter of fact, it occurred to me that afterward, I "needed" a piastra colleg in my spine worse than the Guzzi needed it in its spine. I reckon y'er fairly well covered in the "adjustment" department, tho.
docc Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I can tell you when your wife is a Chiropractor, it takes more than an appointment to get an adjustment . . . I did go back and read the thread linked above and remember that getting the fasteners in was really difficult. One of those projects that will double your vocabulary.
