Aprilia UK are in the process of fettling my Le Mans after the local dealers proved unwilling or unable to do anything. I spoke to Neil at Aprilia (you know it's bad when you're on first name terms with the Customer Services manager) this afternoon to get a progress report.

It turns out the gearbox/clutch failure was caused by the dealer that last worked on the gearbox - in so far as they didn't fill it back up with oil [1] either when they finished fitting the new gearbox spring, or even worse, at the first service (done the day before the spring went). Apparently everything in the box that was still in one piece was a lovely shade of about-to-melt blue :o

Aprilia UK aren't going to single out a dealer for blame and say they'll pay for all the repairs themselves, but since only one shop ever laid spanners on the bike I know which dealer I'll be avoiding in future. I just have to wait for the parts to arrive so they can rebuild it [2].

[1] No, *of course* I didn't check it. It was an easy warranty job, so it never occurred to me they could screw it up. A lesson learned there.

[2] They have the technology :P

That is so weak. Reminds me of a Britsh officer evaluation I once read:

"This man is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot"

Glad to hear things are getting sorted out.

Martin,

the place I used is a small family firm in central Scotland (only about 10 miles from the site of the MGCGB Scottish rally) so unless you have a sudden emergency within say 20 miles of Stirling you're probably safe.

They have a poor reputation locally for pretty much everything, but since they are one of only 2 dealers in Scotland I was rather tied for gettng the work done.

My warranty is up in August, so it will be one of the non dealership specialists that get my money from then on.

Andy
