Replacing rear brake caliper seals..........NOT!

OK, so Brembo don't want us to take these things apart for whatever reason and therefore they must figure that the best way to stop Joe Public messing with their products is to make sure that there are no caliper rebuild kits available!

 

After a disc blueing piston seize on the rear caliper of my V10 Centauro, (same caliper as the V11, right?), I did what I've done with all previous calipers I've wanted to refurbish and stripped it down and ordered a seal and piston kit and waited............ and waited............and waited..............and finally received something for what looks like a V50 caliper which of course doesn't fit. No rebuild kit available apparently.

 

So a quick scout around reveals:

 

Brembo P32B Goldline caliper from Teo Lamers is £88.04 (Euro 129.45) plus postage.

 

Found this go kart and bike supplies place here in the UK

Probably a good idea to shop around for similar go kart racing suppliers in your own country as it appears these are popular calipers for that application.

We sent a caliper to our supplier. They said there was no kit available. They could have been mistaken, however. I'll order up one of those kits and see if it works.

I'd heard about this but since I've not had to rebuild one yet, (I live in an extremely dry area where salt and other such guff is never put on the road so calipers don'tsuffer unduly.) I haven't explored it. What I can tell you is that I'm sure that if I get an example in my sweaty plam I'm 95% certain that I could get the seal from my 'Brake Bloke' and if the piston is munted and no replacement is avialable then machining one out of stainless shouldn't be a huge ask.

 

If someone has a buggered one they would be willing to send me I'd be more than happy to do the legwork.

I just spent a minute doing a Web search and came up with the following on the P32B kit for the P32B Goldline Brembo. Now I haven't ordered one because I don't need one, so I can't speak to availability from having a kit in my hand. But they appear to be orderable at less than $10 USD per throw.

Unless someone has boged the seal or piston on disassembly I don't know why

the need for seals. This is the same caliper as a lot of the Ducatis use....

It has a composite piston....no rust...etc...

I have had mine apart,cleaned, and reassembled with no problems and

50,000 miles

unless its leaking ...clean it and reinstall

It is interesting that most of the P32s seemed to have an X in the seal column, which seems to indicate part not supplied by Brembo.

At first I had to be obscessive about cleaning it every 4000 miles, but then it seemed to break ing

Well, in the case of my V10 - which is where this thread started - the bike had been sitting in a garage for at least 4 years prior to my ownership. The seals had obviously gone off as the piston was intermittently not returning out of contact with the disc causing overheating and finally leaking - it wasn't a problem with the piston/seals in the master cylinder, that checked out OK.

 

When I stripped the caliper the seals crumbled to bits and one piston had blistered what appears to be some sort of Teflon coating so no, it wasn't possible to use the components again.

 

There appears to be a lot of statements from people about the supposed availability of seal kits for this caliper, has anyone actually had one in their hands yet? FWIW I ordered one from one of the suppliers quoted above - Motomecca - and what I received had the correct part number as described on their parts listing but is for a different caliper. Other dealers/outlets stated that no specific kit was available for this caliper.

 

Unless you have actually had a kit in your hands to compare then I suggest that it is not available and some dealers have erroneously listed a different one.

Anyone in need of any Brembo calipers, MCs or spares might like to contact IanE Racing. I've just had an email from him stating he can now do even better deals on Brembo than before - he quoted nearly half the price of other suppliers on the rear caliper.

Greg, Brembo are still supplying rebuild kits? that's good news - I was told that they weren't available anymore & reason by MG/Brembo shop while ordering other parts - I haven't looked for them here. Anyone know if they're available from stock in UK?

Valley Moto Guzzi in Chilliwack also have lots of Brembo parts and kits in stock. They all come from Brembo because if you try to get them from Guzzi they are either unavailable or unaffordable!!

Just found your site doing a search for P32B info...

 

Apologies if this is old info for you:

 

I was after a set of new pistons and seals, the old pistons were blistered through misuse, however I couldn't buy any, so I made my own kit, and here's how to do it...

 

1 x Ducati part 800029627 for the inner seals (about £20) - strangely you can't get this through a dealer - it is known as the P5 seal kit - google is your friend
2 x KTM part 50313081000 for the outer seals (about £5)

 

These fit the P32F too...

 

Pistons are unobtanium, the best solution I have found is to buy:

 

1 x KTM part 69013083000

 

...then put them in the lathe and take 1.7mm off the pad facing surface

 

Again, these fit the P32F too...

 

If you have a P32G, you need:

 

1x KTM 69013081000 (seals)

1 x KTM part 69013083000 (pistons)

 

But if you want a new caliper...  Apparantly, Brembo sold the rights to Grimeca, and you can get awesome deals on these new...

Just discovered this very helpful topic because my rear caliper blew a piston seal and leaked all over my rear tire while riding this morning. I removed the caliper (20k miles, always garaged) this afternoon and discovered it was full of crap as predicted above. Luckily MG Cycles has brand new replacement calipers including pads for $122 in stock, not too bad.

So if you're reading this and your rear caliper hasn't yet crapped out, now is the time to remove it and fully clean and service it!
