exhaust pipe wrap

Hey has anyone ever used that exhuast cloth wrap thingamajig? I seen it used on some old racer guzzi's. It supposedley accelerates the ehaust gas speed, reduces cylinder temps and increases hp. Snake oil or does it only work marginally at extreme condition ( i.e racing).

Everything I've read says that exhaust wrap is about the worst thing you can do as it destroys the headers in short order.
