help!my tach stopped working a couple of months ago. i took it apart and had it worked on by my local marine electronic service{ about 3 months ago].it worked for a couple of weeks. then stopped. i can see where they went in the unit and soldered. well i've taken it apart again, and have been vainly searching for service info/manual.can't find a web site for veglia. does anyone know how to dissemble the internal unit? is there any source for parts? searched the forum here to no avail

Could you provide a picture of what they've repaired/soldered? That would be most welcome on my side, thx

Frank, if you do a search on Veglia Tach, you'll find a great deal of info.

The only shop I'm aware of in the US that at one time both serviced Veglias AND stands by their work 100% is Palo Alto Speedo. High grade work, but I'm afraid time is NOT of the essence WRT turn-around. <_< However, their experience with my Veglia 3 years ago convinced them to start a policy not to service them going forward. They ended up replacing mine with a new one after 2 shots at a repair on the first one. :bbblll:

They may have changed their policy back since then. Couldn't hurt to give Helmut a call. He knows Veglia tachs.

I've often thought about checking the Veglia Tach's on Italian cars as they will probably share a lot of components with ours (I discovered this a few years ago with a Ducati Dash ! ).

The Fiat FIRE engines (Fiat Cinquecento/Seicentoi/Punto)use a wasted spark ign (WM16 or similar?)so the tach may think its on a 2 cylinder anyway, but on the car tach's I've seen the values wouldn't line up with our faceplate so I don't think a direct swap of the complete internals is possible ? :huh2:

i can't post pics, apparently the leads off the coil break.two hair like wires.that is what the marine service repaired.what i am trying to do is remove the rear plate with out doing any damage,so i can look inside.think i can fix it from there.i've looked everywhere on the web i can think of&can not find any veglia info even hemmings fiat has not imported to the us since the mid 70's

Make a circular cut on half height, use a thin metal saw, remove carefully all the little chips which have fallen inside and now stick to the magneto, then do the repair which you think it's appropriate.

When finished, glue the two halfs together again. Aluminium tape is probably the best material for this step.

Search this forum, it's been explained severall times already.

The speedo on my Fiat stopped working today so while I was fixing it I took a photo of the tacho mechanism(I'd pulled the cable out of the head unit while fixing the wiper linkage... ), is it anything like a guzzi tach ?

sorry the pics aren't very clear.

If the letters on the chip read CS8190, then yes.

From what is visible on the pictures, the "air-core meter" is there, although it works up to ~90° angle, unlike Guzzi's, which is more like 270°.

However, it does not seem to be a straightforward, 1:1 replacement. On the other hand, if the meter itself is broken and is impossible to solder back to life, measure the distance between the mounting holes and coil resistance. Chances are it will fit.

The chip reads

ELEX 14308D

6619A 3896

so is different (that would have been too easy !!)

circuit board is marked

MA

5504

10170000

the motor has no markings at all and is capable of 270deg+ motion so is probably a common part- as far as I know they do not fail in car application so failure may be due to the greater range of motion we have and/or vibration ?

I'll measure the spacing and resistance when I get chance to confirm.

Well, if you apply 366Hz signal on its input and it turns 270 degrees then it is the same no matter what.

And yes, it is vibration that kills it (at least killed mine). Measuring resistance of the meter coils should reveal if there is any breakage of the fine copper wires. According to the CS8190 PDF, the meters usually measure ~200 ohms. If you measure something in the whereabouts of infinity, then it is definitely the meter, not the electronics.

is the file you mention-cs8190 pdf-a locked acess file requiring a acess code? or is it downloadble?

thank's 2go.remember reading your excellent thread now&have the site address.hubert "luhbo you mentioned that the early veglia from the first bikes were different----does that mean the file mentioned byguzzi2go would not be relative for the 00 sport?
