overflows and vents

wots the go ?pull the tank on my 2001 mandello has overflow and vent nipples underneath tank but only a hose connected to one which runs down behind motor, I assume this ones the overflow. So is hte hose missing from the vent or do they just vent on top of the engine which seems dodgey, also can't believe how small those intake snorkels are gotta do something about that!

the other vent had a check valve on it and someone removed it to prevent tank suck.you could put another check valve or hose----it leaks fuel if the bike is down
