pasotibbs Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I've PM'd Cliff with this, I may be missing something but I've just noticed there seems to be a big difference between the throttle position and the area of map actually being used ?(could explain a lot !!) I hit the top row of the map at approx half throttle which seems wrong to me !! like I say it may be I'm missing something or have screwed up my map somehow? I actually managed to get out on the bike yesterday and after a few miles on autotune it was running really well, not perfect but the best yet !! fast idle on half throttle Static Config TDC=0x1600, I recall reporting a similar issue but it turned out I was only experiencing it with engine not running just like in your screendumps. For some reason it won't calculate stuff correctly then. It's probably just that. On a completely different subject I just ran ECUControl.exe from Linux under Wine. I'm very happy to report it works as a champ. No fiddling whatsoever, I just made a symlink from /dev/ttyUSB0 to ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1 to link the COM port once. After that it's just to double-click the exe from Ubuntu Linux and it works just fine. I have heard similar success with Innovate's software IIRC. I'll now go out and ride around with injection phasing centered around 280 degrees. I'll be back (I hope)
raz Posted April 24, 2009 Author Posted April 24, 2009 OK here is the first results of my experiments with injection phasing. Cliff's map is delivered with 525 all over. And that means injection pulse ends at 525 degrees BTDC of compression. This may be fine for lower rpm but if you do a little math you will find that at high rpm and wide throttles, this means the injection pulse starts way back in the previous intake stroke. While ugly in theory it may not be that bad in the real world though. We seldom run the engine for just one cycle... For a quick trial of the extremes, I made three maps. All three needed to take the actual pulse widths for each cell in account, as we are controlling the trailing edge of the pulse. We also need to calculate the engine speed in terms of degrees/ms. Easily done in Excel though: 1. A "start at valve open" map where the Start of Injection is placed when the intake valve opens. But when the valve duration was shorter than the pw, I let it start earlier. This InjAdv map ranged from 382 (lower left) to 126 (upper right). 2. A "center around highest speed of charge" map with the injection pulse centered around 280 degrees BTDC. The idea (which is not mine) is that the intake charge has highest speed somewhere in the vicinity of that point. This InjAdv map ranged from 267 to 130. Some of the upper right cells was limited at 130, just like above. 3. An "early" map where we try to start injecting not long after previous cycle's valve close. This is like the default "525 all over" but we never let it stretch into the previous cycle. This map ranged from 715 to 140. The first map I tried a week ago. I didn't notice much difference at all from my normal map. Today I first tried the second one. I percieved it as rough. I did no logging and it's very hard to make facts out of anything but it seemed the closed-loop was constantly at -5% to -10% compared to my good old map. What does that mean? I guess it means we can't use as much fuel and this ought to be bad for power. After that I immediately tried the third one. This felt much smoother and the closed loop correction went down to around zero again. To my disappointment it didn't go positive. This was just a very brief test. I'm not sure it tells us anything at all, other than it seems to confirm wot Cliff said. Tomorrow I will try fiddling with the idle cell ONLY and see if I can find a sweet spot where idle is as good as possible. I postponed that because I'm currently not having an rpm breakpoint at the idle speed. I can't even remember why but I will fix that first.

It only works as expected when the engine is running." That explains it, I'd not noticed it before but thought it was probably worth mentioning here as others will no doubt find it useful to know.
Punch Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I am relatively new to actually using My15M as i finally put it in a few days ago. I have a tech background and prefer to read and understand before leaping in. People need to understand what maps are about and what each sector does. The attachment is a rough of bits downloaded from Sigma Performance fom the UK which makes sense to me. I.e. what happens where and even in sectors you thought did not apply. That is - we also slow down some times so high rev, low throttle positions have an impact. I will post my experience/approach separately. Richard Sigma_map_zones.pdf
Punch Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 As per last post - new to MyECU. I assembled it in January and tried it out and it was hard to start and ran like a pig! Had a big trip to Philip Island for WSBK then catch up on work so did little. being of a technical background I decided that if you can measure something, you know what to change, so I bought an Innovate Motorsport LC-1 This was my best decision (after MyECU) Ran the bike with the original ECU and measured AFR - mostly 10 to 11, far too rich, but it goes well. Put in My15M with Cliff's V11 Breva map - same AFR. Used global adjust from 1101 rpm to max to lean off by 10% as a starter. Ran well but hard to start even after seriously reducing injector duration at 1100 rpm. Had an email from Greenmonster regarding TDCwhilecranking - did as GM recommended and set it to 0 (fire from map, not TDC) - it starts like a dream - thankyou!!! Next step - read some info on tuneboy.com.au about AFR settings via their software. Did Excel calcs to work out target voltages for AFRs from 12.8 to 13.5, modified the target voltages in the text file to suit this narrow range of voltages/AFR, then set the O2 flags in the text file to match tuneboy starting targets. Set the ECU to closed loop - starts and runs like a dream again, in comparison to the orginal ECU and the starting Breva map. Next step is to log how much correction the ECU has to apply to meet AFR targets the adjust injectors durations so the "base" map is close to my set AFR targets. Some functional/practical mods. I drilled 2 holes in the bottom of the ECU case. I cut a LAN cable, poked it through one hole, snapped off the RJ45 socket and soldered the wires to the pins left from the snapped off connector. The other end sits under my seat for connection later to when i work out how to log. The other hole has a 2 wire cable that connects to the SW1 pins. I set SW1 to open, then the other end of the cable has a socket. I modified the plug for this socket so it was a short circuit. Result is - plug in means SW1 closed, plug out means SW1 open. This means I can switch quickly from open to closed loop without having to lift the tank and open the ECU case. Keep you posted! Rchard
Punch Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Logging Has anyone mastered logging via HyperTerminal yet? The manual that comes with the Innovate Motorsports LC-1 wideband O2 sensor for their Logworks3 software looks amazing. I have sent an email to Cliff and later the manual for Logworks, asking if MyECU can/could interface as it appears brilliant. If anyone wants a copy of the manual - send me an email punch@bigpond.net.au. It uses the same com port as MyECU, so there may be a chance. I have the inclination but not the time or knowledge.
luhbo Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 ... Ran well but hard to start even after seriously reducing injector duration at 1100 rpm. Had an email from Greenmonster regarding TDCwhilecranking - did as GM recommended and set it to 0 (fire from map, not TDC) - it starts like a dream - thankyou!!! ... Starting the engine is managed here: -------------------- # Prime gives the fuel injection time in ms while cranking #Temp C -30 -20 -10 0 10 20 25 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 100 110 125 Prime 32 30 28 26 20 17 15 13 8 5 5 5 --------------------- Row 0 (500) is for transition only. Cranking pulswidth are the 2 lines above (IAEF-STTFM ) TDC = 0 does not work well for me. Why should it? The engine is turning so slowly that spark at TDC is basically a must! You'll notice the difference at lower temperatures and lower voltages. Mine always strikes back then. HTH, Hubert
luhbo Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Logging Has anyone mastered logging via HyperTerminal yet? ..... Yes. It works fine. The trick is to load the map first and then the logfile if you want to translate it with ECUControl. The rest, parameters and so, is described on Cliff's site. Once you have a good long logfile for your typical route then evaluate (Excel) in which map areas you're typically running your bike. You'll then find this sigma thingens not very useful I'm afraid. Do you have a good terminal emulation for PocketPC by the way? Hubert

If anyone wants a copy of the manual - send me an email punch@bigpond.net.au. Yeah, having all MyECU data fed to LogWorks would be really really sweet. I tried to get hold of a software development kit for LogWorks, or just some specs for how to communicate with it, but I only found ways to read OUT stuff from LogWorks. I know there is a third party LogWorks plugin for Suzuki Hayabusa. Maybe we should ask him how he got hold of the spec's. Sadly the once very good Innovate forums seem now to be officially abandoned by all staff and it's now just a user forum. And many years ago I swore to never EVER communicate with ANY &%¤#§ support department over the phone again in my entire life, so that is not an option <_> I did some experiments with an own logger that read MyECU data as well as GPS data (mainly speed and altitude) from another port but it wasn't that worthful. I do think that if Cliff manage to support LogWorks, he won't regret it. Manuals, SDK and stuff are here: http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/support.php

I also found that setting the TDCwhilecranking to 0 solved my starting issues but I also altered the enrichment and timing values as well. My map is posted a few posts above so you may want to compare, Raz posted a map from a 1100Sporti a few pages ago that had the targets narrowed (as you are doing) to improve mileage so you may learn something from the work done there ? Starting on mine is now a matter of spinning the motor over and opening the throttle until it fires, then setting the fast idle to stop it stalling, there may still be work to be done but I haven't had a kick back since making the changes (and they where BIG kickbacks ,a couple of times so loud and violent I thought a rod must have made a bid for freedom !!) Glad its not just me that had this issue !!!(maybe its fuel quality that varies between countries ?) Dave
greenmonster Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Well, TDC Cranking=0 is really smooth f me as f Punch, maybe a Duc thing (+pasotibbs... ) Default being 1 is a mistake as I see it, easy to overlook and you work w the table f no use when it is not enabled. Yes, I could have read the manual better but still think 0 default is more customer friendly. Some garage inj timing tests tonight: Set at 300, good/fast response at lower RPM/TPS. But, 300 at row 600 starting RPM, kickbacks, 517 smooth start again. Btw, pasotibbs, are you a Paso owner?
greenmonster Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 PC problemo: Changed Inj timing in Word Pad by hand, like 30 values ( sorry, Punch, don`t master your Excel yet ). When I saved it, it now was a text .txt file! Why so? And how to avoid it? Got by it w some cut & paste but irritating. Nice this thread is back to life after a long winter!

I wouldn't call it a mistake but I'm happy it's configurable. Even with TDC Cranking you will benefit from having sane values at 500 rpm (or whatever you've got in first column) since that column will still be used before coming up to normal idle speed. As soon as we pass 500 rpm the ECU will still read the map. The ECU never actually knows if we are pressing the starter button or not.

I guess you didn't give it an extension so Wordpad picked one for you. The .txt extension is just a name indicating "plain text" which is just what we want. Just rename it and you're set. If you always name them .ecu it wont happen again.
